How to Change Spark Plugs on a Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3L V8 (Step-by-Step)
Changing spark plugs on the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 is a straightforward job that most mechanically comfortable owners can handle in 2–3 hours. The iridium plugs are rated for 97,500 miles, but high-mileage trucks, trucks used for towing, or any Silverado showing misfire codes benefit from fresh plugs. Here's how to do it right.
What You'll Need
- Spark plugs: ACDelco 41-162 (iridium, OEM spec) × 8 — don't go cheap on plugs
- 5/8" spark plug socket (with rubber insert to hold the plug)
- 3", 6", and 12" extensions
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- Torque wrench (13 lb-ft is the spec — aluminum heads require precision)
- Anti-seize compound (small tube)
- Dielectric grease (for the ignition coil boots)
- Compressed air or a shop vac
- Penetrating oil (PB Blaster or similar) if the truck is high mileage
Before You Start: Important Warnings
⚠️ Never change spark plugs on a hot engine. The aluminum heads expand when hot, and removing plugs under heat can pull threads. Let the engine cool completely — at least 2–3 hours after last operation, or start the job on a cold morning.
⚠️ Torque to spec. 13 lb-ft on new plugs in aluminum heads. Too tight = stripped threads (very expensive repair). Too loose = plug can work out or cause misfire. Use a torque wrench — don't guess.
⚠️ On high-mileage trucks (100K+): Spray penetrating oil around the base of each plug 24 hours before the job. This loosens any corrosion and dramatically reduces the risk of breaking a plug or stripping the head.
Silverado 5.3L Cylinder Layout
The 5.3L V8 uses a standard GM cylinder numbering layout:
- Driver's side (left bank): Cylinders 1, 3, 5, 7 (front to rear)
- Passenger side (right bank): Cylinders 2, 4, 6, 8 (front to rear)
Work one cylinder at a time — remove the coil, remove the plug, install the new plug, reinstall the coil — then move to the next. This prevents mixing up ignition coil connectors.
Step-by-Step Procedure
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover (If Equipped)
2019–2026 Silverados have a plastic engine cover over the top of the engine. It pops off with firm upward pressure at the corners — no tools needed.
Step 2: Access Passenger-Side Plugs (2, 4, 6, 8)
The passenger side plugs are tucked behind the air intake tube. Remove the intake tube (typically two clamps and the MAF sensor connector) to gain full access. This takes 5 minutes and makes the job much easier.
Step 3: Disconnect the Ignition Coil
Each cylinder has a coil-on-plug ignition coil sitting directly on top of the spark plug. Disconnect the electrical connector (press the tab and pull straight back). Then remove the single 8mm or 10mm bolt holding the coil to the valve cover. Pull the coil straight up — it may take firm wiggling to break loose from the plug boot. Note: if the boot tears, replace the coil.
Step 4: Blow Out the Plug Well
Before removing the plug, use compressed air or a shop vac to clear any debris from around the plug. Dirt in the combustion chamber is bad news. Even a quick blast with a can of compressed air works.
Step 5: Remove the Old Plug
Insert the 5/8" plug socket with extension and ratchet. Turn counterclockwise to loosen. On the first turn, you'll feel it break loose — continue until it's finger-loose, then lift it out. Inspect the old plug: the electrode gap, any oil fouling, or carbon deposits tell you about engine health.
Step 6: Prepare and Install the New Plug
Apply a thin coat of anti-seize to the plug threads (not the electrode end). This makes future removal much easier, especially in aluminum heads. Thread the new plug in by hand first — cross-threading is the biggest mistake on aluminum heads. Once hand-tight, torque to exactly 13 lb-ft with your torque wrench.
Step 7: Apply Dielectric Grease and Reinstall Coil
Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease inside the coil boot. This prevents the boot from sticking to the ceramic plug insulator and makes future removal easier. Press the coil firmly down onto the plug until it seats with a click or firm resistance. Reinstall the mounting bolt. Reconnect the electrical connector.
Step 8: Repeat for All 8 Cylinders
Work through all 8 plugs one at a time. Reinstall the intake tube and engine cover when complete.
Step 9: Start the Engine and Check
Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes. It may idle rough for 30–60 seconds as new plugs seat — this is normal. Scan for any misfire codes. A misfire on one specific cylinder after a plug change usually means that coil isn't seated fully — shut off, reseat the coil, and recheck.
