OnStar Not Working? Common Causes & Fixes for GM Vehicles

OnStar is one of GM's most valued features — but when it stops working, it can be a real headache. Whether your OnStar button does nothing, the blue light is solid red, your remote commands stopped working, or the system went offline after a battery replacement, you're not alone. These are among the most frequently reported issues by GM owners in 2025 and 2026.

This guide covers every common cause, what GM has issued as official fixes, and what you can try before paying for a dealership visit.

How OnStar Works (Quick Overview)

OnStar uses a Telematics Control Module (TCM) — sometimes called the Telematics Communication Unit (TCU) — to communicate with GM's servers over a cellular network. The system enables:

  • Emergency and roadside assistance calls
  • Remote start/lock/unlock via the myChevrolet app
  • Vehicle diagnostics and monthly reports
  • Wi-Fi hotspot (on subscription plans)
  • Stolen vehicle slowdown and location tracking

When any part of this chain breaks — the TCM hardware, the cellular connection, GM's servers, or your account — OnStar stops working.

Common OnStar Problems & What Causes Them

1. Red Light on the OnStar Button (Solid or Flashing)

This is the most reported symptom. The OnStar mirror or overhead button unit shows a solid or flashing red light instead of the normal green or blue.

What it usually means:

  • The TCM has lost its connection to GM's network
  • The TCM has entered an unrecoverable state (see GM Service Update below)
  • A fuse or power supply issue is affecting the module
  • Battery replacement disrupted module power

2. OnStar Went Offline After Battery Replacement

This is extremely common. When the vehicle battery is disconnected or goes completely dead, the TCM can lose its configuration or get stuck in an error state. Sometimes it recovers on its own within a few drive cycles — often it doesn't.

What to try first:

  1. Drive the vehicle for 20–30 minutes at highway speed — some modules reconnect during extended drives as they reach operating temperature
  2. Park somewhere with good cellular signal (not a parking garage)
  3. Call OnStar at 1-888-466-7827 — they can attempt to remotely re-provision your module

3. GM Service Update N262547330 — TCM Unrecoverable State

In early 2026, GM issued a widespread service update (not a recall) covering dozens of 2024–2026 model year vehicles across Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. The TCM can enter an "unrecoverable state" that disrupts OnStar, remote commands, and app connectivity.

Affected vehicles include: Silverado EV, Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Cadillac Lyriq, 2026 Corvette, and many others with shared software architecture.

The fix: TCM reprogramming at an authorized GM dealer. For EVs, only certified EV-capable dealers can perform the procedure. Some vehicles can receive the fix via over-the-air update if you've accepted GM's OTA terms in the myChevrolet app.

Cost: Should be covered under the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty (3 years/36,000 miles). If you're out of warranty, ask about goodwill assistance.

4. OnStar App / Remote Commands Not Working

You can press the physical OnStar button and get a response, but the myChevrolet app says your vehicle is "unavailable" or remote start/lock fails.

Common causes:

  • Cellular plan expired or payment lapsed
  • App needs to be updated or re-logged in
  • Vehicle needs to be re-linked to your account
  • TCM firmware needs an update

Fix steps:

  1. Check your OnStar subscription status at onstar.com
  2. Log out and back into the myChevrolet app
  3. Delete and reinstall the app
  4. Call OnStar to have them re-push your vehicle's provisioning

5. OnStar Wi-Fi Hotspot Dropped

The hotspot disappeared or devices can no longer connect, even though OnStar otherwise works.

Common causes:

  • Data plan expired (Wi-Fi requires a separate data subscription)
  • Reached monthly data cap
  • Carrier network issue (GM uses AT&T in the US)

Fix: Check your plan status at onstar.com or call OnStar. If your plan is active and the hotspot is still missing, a TCM reprogram may be needed.

6. OnStar Works But Voice Quality Is Poor

Calls connect but advisors can barely hear you, or audio is cutting in and out.

Common causes:

  • Damaged or loose microphone (often near the rearview mirror base or overhead console)
  • Poor cellular signal in your area
  • Corroded microphone connector (common in older vehicles)

7. OnStar Subscription Lapsed / Not Subscribed

After the trial period (typically 3 months for new vehicles), OnStar requires an active subscription for most features. Emergency calling remains available for free even without a subscription, but remote access, diagnostics, and Wi-Fi require paid plans.

Current OnStar Plans (2026):

  • Safety & Security: Emergency services, roadside, stolen vehicle assistance
  • Remote Access: App controls, remote start/lock, vehicle diagnostics
  • Connected Access: All of the above + data plan for Wi-Fi hotspot

OnStar Troubleshooting Checklist

  1. ☐ Check account status at onstar.com — is your subscription active?
  2. ☐ Try pressing the blue OnStar button — do you get a live advisor?
  3. ☐ Park in an open area with strong cellular coverage and wait 10 minutes
  4. ☐ Drive for 20–30 minutes at highway speed
  5. ☐ Update or reinstall the myChevrolet app and re-login
  6. ☐ Check if your vehicle has accepted OTA updates (Settings > Software Update)
  7. ☐ Check for GM TSBs applicable to your VIN at nhtsa.gov
  8. ☐ Call OnStar at 1-888-466-7827 — they can often fix provisioning issues remotely
  9. ☐ Schedule a dealer visit for TCM reprogramming if all else fails

Older GM Vehicles (2010–2018): 3G Network Sunset

If you have a GM vehicle from roughly 2010–2018 and OnStar has completely stopped working, the likely cause is the 3G cellular network shutdown that AT&T completed. These older TCMs used 3G connectivity, which is no longer available.

Your options:

  • GM offered a TCM hardware upgrade program for some affected vehicles — call OnStar to see if your VIN qualifies
  • Emergency calling may still work via 2G fallback on some vehicles
  • For most 2010–2015 vehicles, OnStar connectivity features are no longer recoverable without a hardware upgrade

When to Go to the Dealer

Book a dealer appointment if:

  • The solid red light persists after trying all the steps above
  • OnStar went out after a battery replacement and hasn't recovered after a week of driving
  • You're getting error codes related to the TCM (U-codes from an OBD scan)
  • Your vehicle may be covered under GM Service Update N262547330

Before your appointment, note your VIN and call 1-888-466-7827 to have OnStar try remote provisioning first — it can sometimes save the trip.
