P0449 Code on a Cadillac: EVAP Vent Solenoid Control Circuit (Cadillac Guide)

P0449 on a Cadillac is GM's "EVAP Vent Solenoid Control Circuit." It sits in the middle of the EVAP leak codes, but it is an electrical code. The engine computer checked the wiring to the canister vent valve and didn't see the voltage it expected. A smoke machine won't find it, and a new gas cap won't fix it. A meter, a wiring diagram and a close look at the connector will. On Cadillacs, the GM documents that name P0449 point to two places: corrosion at the vent valve on 2007–2010 Escalades, which GM fixes with a sealed replacement assembly, and the canister and vent valve on the 2019 XT5, where GM asked technicians to measure the voltage at the vent valve harness.

What Does P0449 Mean on a Cadillac?

The EVAP system on a Cadillac has two valves the engine control module (ECM) operates. The purge valve near the engine lets stored fuel vapor into the intake. The canister vent solenoid (CVS) valve at the charcoal canister lets fresh air in. The vent stays open in normal driving. The ECM energizes it closed when it wants to seal the system for a leak test.

P0449 is the ECM telling you it doesn't trust its control of that vent valve. How GM words the test has changed over the years:

  • 2000 Northstar 4.6L (DeVille, Seville, Eldorado): the table says P0449 "detects when the circuit is open, shorted to ground or shorted to +12V," set after 100 failures in 120 samples with the engine running. Type B, two trips.
  • 2004 Northstar: the code "checks the fuel tank vent solenoid circuit for electrical integrity," and sets after 10 seconds of an invalid output state. Type B.
  • 2019 3.6L V6 and 2.0T groups (XT4, XT5, XTS, ATS, CTS, CT6): the ECM checks the vent solenoid's low-side driver, meaning the ground side it switches, for an open circuit. With the output switched off, it compares the voltage on that wire with its limits and counts a failure at 20 of 25 samples. GM notes that on certain controllers a short to ground on the same wire sets P0498 instead.
  • 2023 tables (XT4, XT5, XT6, CT4, CT5, Escalade groups): the same open-circuit check, now 50 failures in 63 samples. Still Type B, two trips.

Practically, P0449 usually comes down to a broken or chafed wire, a corroded or loose connector, a lost power feed, or a vent solenoid coil that has opened up.

A Circuit Code, Not a Leak Code

This distinction saves the most time, so here it is in one table.

Code What GM is testing Where the fault usually is
P0449 The vent solenoid control circuit: open circuit or voltage out of range Wiring, connector, terminals, solenoid coil, power feed
P0498 Vent solenoid control circuit low (short to ground) on some controllers Chafed wire, damaged connector
P0446 Vent system performance: is the fresh-air path restricted? Blocked vent filter or hose, stuck valve, canister
P0442 / P0455 Small and large leak tests Lines, cap, valves, canister

If the ECM can't control the vent, its leak tests can't run properly either. That's why P0449 often comes with P0446, P0442 or P0455. Fix the circuit first, then see whether the others come back.

Which Cadillacs Set P0449

We searched GM's OBD tables from 1997 to 2025. P0449 isn't in the 1997–1999 Cadillac tables we read, which covered the Northstar and the Catera. It first appears in the 2000 Northstar table. From then on it is in every Cadillac gasoline group we checked:

  • Northstar 4.6L and 4.4L supercharged: DeVille, Seville, Eldorado, DTS, STS, XLR, SRX V8, STS-V, XLR-V
  • The Opel-built 3.0L Catera, from the 2001 table (the 2000 Catera table doesn't list it)
  • 3.2L and 3.6L CTS and STS from 2003; 2.8L and 3.0L SRX; and every later 3.6L, 2.0T, 2.7T and 3.0TT engine in the XTS, ATS, CT6, XT4, XT5, XT6, CT4 and CT5
  • Escalade V8s from the 2002 truck table on. The 1999–2000 Escalade's 5.7L table doesn't include P0449

The electric Lyriq and Optiq have no EVAP system. Some newer GM vehicles drive the vent solenoid through a separate fuel tank zone module rather than directly from the ECM, and GM's 2019 tables carry separate P0449 entries for those systems. So the wiring path on a late-model Cadillac may run through another module. Check the schematic for your VIN.

What GM Has Published for Cadillac

2007–2010 Escalade: water and corrosion at the vent valve (09-06-04-028D, April 2014). This is the GM bulletin that names P0449 on Cadillac trucks. Its subject lists "DTC P0442, P0446, P0455 or P0449 Set – Fuel Tank Hard to Fill – Moisture, Water, Corrosion at EVAP CVS Valve," and its model list starts with 2007–2010 Cadillac Escalade models. GM's explanation is that the valve breathes through a vent tied to the fuel filler pipe. Water drawn in can reach the valve and corrode it, and corrosion is exactly what produces an open circuit. The fix is a revised, sealed CVS assembly, part number 20995472, with a remote pre-filter mounted on the fuel filler housing. GM says not to replace the canister unless it fails the leak test or has taken in a lot of dirt, dust or water. The procedure, including the 2008–2009 hybrid steps, is in the bulletin.

2019 XT5: canister and vent study (PIE0528, July 2019). GM's engineering information for the 2019 XT5 and related crossovers lists P0442, P0455, P0446, P0449 and P0498. It asks technicians to "document the voltage at the CVS harness when activated" and to return complete canister assemblies without separating the vent valve. It applies only when the customer has reported the concern and the PIE number shows for the VIN in GM's warranty system. It is a reminder that GM wants the circuit measured, not guessed.

2012 CTS vent valve coverage (14264). Many Cadillac owners have heard of this one. It covered a vent valve that may not properly close on the 2012 CTS with the 3.0L, 3.6L or 6.2L LSA, which makes the system falsely report a leak. That is a mechanical sealing problem, not a circuit fault. GM's inventory bulletin for it names P0442. The coverage ran 10 years or 120,000 miles, so it has passed for practical purposes, though a dealer VIN check is free.

Truck bulletins that don't name the Escalade. 15-06-04-002 and 23-NA-073, the dust and water vent valve bulletins for 2011-and-later trucks, list Silverado and Sierra only. For the Chevrolet view of this code, see our Chevy P0449 guide.

Symptoms of P0449

  • Check engine light, usually the only symptom
  • An intermittent light that comes and goes with rain, car washes or road splash, which is common with corroded connectors
  • Other EVAP codes with it: P0446, P0442, P0455, P0498
  • On a 2007–2010 Escalade, a fuel tank that is hard to fill, from the same corroded valve
  • No change in how the car drives
  • A failed emissions inspection, because the EVAP monitors can't complete

Causes and How to Confirm Each

Cause How to confirm it Notes
Corroded vent valve or connector Inspect the valve connector and terminals for green corrosion, water and pushed-out pins GM's documented condition on 2007–2010 Escalades
Vent solenoid coil open Measure coil resistance and compare with the service specification An open coil looks the same to the ECM as an open wire
Open or chafed wire Check continuity of the control and supply circuits to the ECM (or the tank module on newer models) Look where the harness runs along the frame and near the tank
Lost power feed or blown fuse Check for battery voltage at the valve with the ignition on The supply source varies by model
Short to ground Often sets P0498 instead on controllers that separate it Check for chafing
Control module driver fault Only after the wiring and valve test good Rare, so rule everything else out first

How Is P0449 Diagnosed on a Cadillac?

  1. Record every code, current and history. P0449 with P0446 or a hard-to-fill tank suggests a corroded, sticking valve. P0449 alone suggests wiring.
  2. Check the VIN for open bulletins. On a 2007–2010 Escalade, see whether the revised assembly from 09-06-04-028D is already installed.
  3. Find the vent valve and its connector using the service information for your model. On the 2007–2010 Escalade, GM's bulletin places it near the spare tire.
  4. Inspect the connector and terminals for corrosion and water before testing anything else.
  5. Check for supply voltage at the valve with the ignition on.
  6. Command the vent closed and open with a bidirectional scan tool. A click and a matching change in tank pressure mean the valve works, and the fault is in the wiring or connector.
  7. Measure coil resistance and test the control circuit back to the ECM or fuel tank zone module, following the schematic for your VIN.
  8. Repair the circuit. Seal any repaired outdoor connection, and replace a corroded valve rather than cleaning it.
  9. Clear the codes and drive. P0449 is a two-trip code, so it needs clean trips to stay off. Let the EVAP leak monitors run afterward too.

Parts and Cost

Repair What it involves Cost picture
Connector clean or repair Replace corroded terminals or the connector, then seal it Mostly labor
Wiring repair Splice a chafed or broken wire Modest
Canister vent solenoid valve Bolt-on at the canister; order by VIN Moderate
Revised Escalade CVS assembly GM's 20995472 with remote pre-filter, per 09-06-04-028D Moderate; more labor than a simple valve swap
EVAP canister Only where the valve is integral or the canister has failed a test Larger, and not a typical P0449 repair

What Other P0449 Pages Get Wrong

  • Treating it as a leak. GM's definition is an electrical check of the vent solenoid circuit. Smoke testing won't find it.
  • "Replace the gas cap." The cap has nothing to do with the vent solenoid circuit.
  • Blaming the 2012 CTS vent valve coverage. 14264 covered a valve that doesn't seal, which is a leak-test problem. It doesn't name P0449, and its term has passed.
  • Replacing the canister. For the Escalade, GM's own bulletin says to leave the canister alone unless it fails a test or is contaminated.
  • Applying newer truck bulletins to every Escalade. The Escalade bulletin is 09-06-04-028D, for 2007–2010. The later dust bulletins name Silverado and Sierra only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P0449 serious?

Not for driving. It doesn't usually change how the Cadillac runs. But the EVAP leak tests can't run while it's set, so the car will fail an emissions inspection, and corrosion behind it tends to get worse.

Can a gas cap cause P0449?

No. P0449 is about the electrical control of the vent solenoid. The gas cap affects the leak tests, P0442 and P0455.

My Escalade has P0449 and is hard to fill. Are they related?

Very likely. GM's 09-06-04-028D for 2007–2010 Escalades describes water and corrosion at the vent valve causing both the codes and the hard-fill symptom. The fix is GM's revised sealed vent valve assembly.

Do I need a new vent valve?

Only if testing shows its coil is open or it doesn't respond when commanded, or if it is visibly corroded. Check the connector, supply voltage and wiring first.

What's the difference between P0449 and P0446?

P0449 is the vent solenoid's electrical circuit. P0446 is vent system performance, meaning whether air can actually flow through the vent path. One is a wiring question, the other a flow question.

Will P0449 clear itself?

If the fault was intermittent, the light may go off after enough clean trips, because it is a two-trip code. But a wet or corroded connection usually comes back, so inspect it even if the light goes out.

Where is the vent valve on my Cadillac?

It is at or near the EVAP canister, usually close to the fuel tank. On the 2007–2010 Escalade, GM's bulletin shows it near the spare tire. Use the service information for your VIN rather than a generic diagram.
