P1101 Code on a Buick: Intake Air Flow System Performance (Buick Guide)

P1101 on a Buick is "Intake Air Flow System Performance." It is a GM-specific code, and it is not a sensor code in the usual sense: GM's own tables say it sets when the engine computer finds more than one intake sensor reading out of line with its models and cannot pin the fault on any single one. That makes P1101 an air-leak and airflow-path code far more often than a bad part. On Buicks it shows up mostly on the turbocharged Encore, Regal, Verano and Envision, and GM's bulletins for those cars blame loose duct clamps, a missing O-ring, an unseated hose, the PCV system — and on the Encore 1.4T, an oil leak caused by crankcase pressure.

What Does P1101 Mean on a Buick?

The "P1" prefix means a manufacturer-specific code, so you will not find P1101 in the generic SAE list with a meaning that matches GM's. On GM engines, P1101 is Intake Air Flow System Performance — sometimes written "Inlet Airflow System Performance" in GM's calibration tables.

GM's 2021 OBD tables, which cover the Encore GX engines, describe it plainly: P1101 detects a performance failure in the MAP sensor, turbocharger boost pressure sensor, throttle position sensor or MAF sensor "that cannot be uniquely identified as a failure in one individual sensor. This diagnostic can set when more than one of these sensors has a performance concern." GM's 2015 tables describe the naturally aspirated version the same way: multiple air induction problems affecting airflow and/or manifold pressure.

In other words, P1101 is what the ECM sets when the picture does not add up and it cannot tell which piece is lying. If it could, it would set P0101 (MAF performance), P0106 (MAP performance), P0121 (throttle position) or P0236 (boost sensor) instead.

How GM's Airflow Model Works

GM calls the strategy the Intake Flow Rationality Diagnostic. The ECM calculates what each sensor should read from the others, then compares:

Model What is compared Fail threshold in GM's 2021 table
MAF model Measured airflow vs airflow calculated from MAP, throttle and rpm More than 17 g/s difference
MAP models 1 and 2 Measured manifold pressure vs two calculated estimates More than 25 kPa
MAP model 3 and boost (TIAP) model Manifold and boost pressure vs further estimates More than 30 kPa
Throttle model Throttle position vs the airflow it should produce Filtered error above a calibrated limit

A failure matrix decides which code to set from the combination of passes and failures. A vacuum leak after the MAF is the classic P1101 pattern: the MAF reports less air than the engine is really breathing, the throttle sits more closed than the model expects, and MAP no longer agrees with either. Several models fail together, so the ECM sets P1101 rather than blaming one sensor.

GM lists P1101 as a two-trip code in these tables. Expect the light on the second drive with the fault present.

Which Buicks Set P1101

Any Buick with an electronic throttle and both MAF and MAP sensors can set P1101. GM documents name it on:

  • 2013–2019 Encore 1.4L turbo (LUJ, LUV, LE2) — PCV pipe, air cleaner housing, CAC hose and oil-consumption PIs.
  • 2016–2022 Encore 1.4L (LE2) — bulletin 20-NA-047, crankshaft seal oil leaks with P1101 from high crankcase pressure.
  • 2013 Verano 2.0T (LHU) — loose air duct clamps (PI0931).
  • 2013–2019 Regal 2.0T (LHU/LTG), 2013–2016 Verano 2.0T and 2017–2019 Envision 2.0T (LTG) — a missing or damaged charge air cooler coupler O-ring (PIP5402E).
  • 2020–2022 Encore GX (1.2L/1.3L) — a broken wire in the multifunction intake air sensor harness (22-NA-008).

The code can also set on the 3.6L LaCrosse, Regal and Enclave and the 2.4L and 2.5L four-cylinders, but we found no GM bulletin naming P1101 on those engines.

What GM's Bulletins Say

Encore 1.4T: unmetered air through the PCV system. PI0907C (2013–2017 Encore) gives a simple test: with a warm engine and A/C and defrost off, throttle position at idle should be 8–12%. Below 7% means unmetered air is getting in — the throttle is closing to make up for air the MAF never saw. GM's suspect is the PCV pipe whose back-pressure valve sits open at the turbo inlet. Tape over the pipe's opening at the manifold; if the throttle reading returns to normal, replace the PCV pipe.

Encore 1.4T: the wrong air cleaner housing. PIP5240F (2013–2019 Encore) says that if diagnostics do not find the cause of P0171 or P1101, inspect the air cleaner housing for the correct content. The LE2 engine housing has both an HCA and a diffuser; the LUV has only the HCA. A housing with the wrong internals changes how air passes the MAF.

Encore 2018–2019: an unseated hose. Bulletin 18-NA-333 covers a whistle at startup, poor acceleration and P1101 on the LE2, caused by poor installation of the charge air cooler outlet hose at the throttle body. The fix is to remove and reseat the hose, and the bulletin says plainly: do not replace parts. (That bulletin labels P1101 as "Mass Air Flow Sensor Performance," which is a slip — GM's own tables and its later bulletins call it Intake Air Flow System Performance.)

Encore LE2: oil leaks and crankcase pressure. Bulletin 20-NA-047 links front or rear crankshaft oil leaks with P1101 to higher-than-normal crankcase pressure from a plugged PCV orifice. GM's normal reading on the LE2 is −1 to −5 inches of water at hot idle in park. Anything above zero is a positive-pressure problem, and the bulletin points at intake restrictions — nesting material, water or ice in the airbox, a kinked PCV tube or a modified intake — and at cracked pistons, which usually also set P0300.

Regal, Verano and Envision 2.0T. PIP5402E says that if P015B or P1101 sets with reduced engine power and normal diagnosis finds nothing, check for a missing or damaged O-ring in the charge air cooler coupler on the passenger side, and smoke test the induction and cooler system. PI0931, for the 2013 Verano 2.0T, is even simpler: tighten both clamps on the air cleaner outlet duct.

Encore GX. Bulletin 22-NA-008 lists U060F, U1346, P0101, P0102, P1101 and P14B6 with reduced power, caused by a broken wire in the multifunction intake air sensor harness where a zip tie at the second retainer behind the sensor was pulled too tight.

Symptoms of P1101

  • Check engine light
  • Reduced engine power message on some Regal, Verano, Envision and Encore GX cases
  • Rough or unstable idle
  • Hesitation or poor acceleration
  • Whistle or hiss from a leaking hose or coupler
  • Oil leaks at crankshaft seals on the Encore LE2
  • Companion codes: P0171, P0101, P0106, P015B, P0299

Causes and How to Confirm Each

Cause How to confirm it Notes
Air leak after the MAF (clamp, duct, coupler, O-ring) Smoke test the intake and charge air system; check clamps; read throttle position at warm idle The most common cause. GM's Verano, Regal and Encore bulletins all point here
PCV system fault Encore 1.4T tape test per PI0907C; crankcase pressure test per 20-NA-047 Encore-specific and well documented
Wrong or damaged air cleaner housing Inspect internals against GM's LE2/LUV description PIP5240F
Wiring fault at the MAF/multifunction sensor Wiggle test the harness with the engine running; check the zip tie at the second retainer Encore GX per 22-NA-008
Contaminated or failing MAF Compare MAF reading with calculated airflow on a scan tool once leaks are ruled out Check for oil on the element on turbo engines
Intake restriction Inspect filter, airbox and inlet for blockage or ice Also raises crankcase pressure

Airflow sensors and throttle parts

How Is P1101 Diagnosed?

  1. Write down every code. If P0101, P0106 or P0121 is also set, start with that sensor. P1101 alone means think "air path."
  2. Read warm-idle data. On an Encore 1.4T, throttle position below 7% points at unmetered air (PI0907C).
  3. Check the easy connections — duct clamps, the CAC outlet hose at the throttle body, the oil fill cap and dipstick.
  4. Smoke test the intake, charge air cooler and PCV plumbing.
  5. Test the PCV system. On the Encore, the tape test; on the LE2, crankcase pressure against GM's −1 to −5 in H₂O range.
  6. Inspect the air cleaner housing and filter for the right internals, damage and blockage.
  7. Check the MAF harness by wiggle test, especially on an Encore GX.
  8. Only then evaluate the sensors against calculated values.
  9. Clear and road test over two drive cycles to confirm.

What Other P1101 Pages Get Wrong

  • Calling it a MAF code. GM defines it as a multi-sensor rationality failure. If the MAF alone were the problem, the ECM would usually set P0101.
  • Replacing the MAF first. GM's Buick bulletins for this code fix clamps, hoses, O-rings, PCV parts, an air box and a wire — not a sensor.
  • Ignoring the PCV system on the Encore. Two separate GM documents tie P1101 on the 1.4T to PCV faults and crankcase pressure.
  • Treating an oil leak as unrelated. On the LE2 Encore, GM links crankshaft seal leaks and P1101 to the same crankcase pressure problem.
  • Using the generic definition. P1101 is manufacturer-specific; non-GM meanings do not apply to a Buick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P1101 serious?

It is usually a driveability and emissions problem rather than an emergency, but some Buicks drop into reduced engine power with it. On an Encore LE2 it can also travel with crankcase pressure that pushes oil out of seals, so do not leave it for months.

Can a loose air filter box cause P1101?

Yes. Any air entering after the MAF is unmetered. GM's 2013 Verano bulletin fixes P1101 by tightening the air duct clamps, and the Encore bulletin replaces an incorrect air cleaner housing.

Should I clean the MAF sensor?

Cleaning with a proper MAF cleaner does no harm, but it rarely fixes P1101 because the code means several readings disagree. Find leaks first.

Why does my Encore idle with the throttle almost closed?

If throttle position at warm idle is below about 7%, GM says unmetered air is getting in — usually through the PCV pipe on the 1.4T. The throttle closes to compensate for air the MAF never measured.

What's the difference between P1101 and P0101?

P0101 means GM's model could isolate the MAF sensor as the problem. P1101 means more than one sensor model failed and no single sensor could be identified.

Will an aftermarket cold air intake cause P1101?

It can. A changed duct or MAF housing alters what the sensor reads, and GM's 20-NA-047 lists modifications to the air induction system among the things to check.
