Two traps hide in that table. The first is the 2019 model year itself. GM sold the old body and the new body side by side in 2019 under the names Silverado 1500 LD and Sierra 1500 Limited. The second trap is 2022. The Silverado 1500 LTD was the last of the old-interior T1XX trucks, sold alongside the refreshed 2022 Silverado 1500. Brake hardware carried over between them — the interior changed, the front rotor did not — but listings often split them out, so search both names.

Why did GM change the front rotor in 2019?

The T1XX trucks got a larger front rotor because they got more capable. Higher tow ratings, more trim variants with 22-inch wheels, and a broader engine lineup all push more heat into the front brakes. Going from 330 mm to 343 mm adds swept area and thermal mass without requiring a bigger wheel.

The practical consequence for you is that the caliper and the caliper bracket changed with it. This is not a case where you can bolt the bigger rotor onto the older truck and gain something. The bracket locates the caliper at a fixed radius from the hub centerline, and a 2014–2018 bracket puts the pads 6.5 mm too far inboard for a 343 mm rotor. The pad would ride off the outer edge of the friction ring.

People do convert older trucks to the larger brakes, and it is a real swap — but it requires the matching knuckle, bracket, caliper, and rotor as a set, and it is outside the scope of a normal pad-and-rotor job. How do I measure my rotors instead of trusting a chart?

Measure the outside diameter of the friction ring with a tape measure across the center of the hub, then measure thickness with a caliper about 10 mm in from the outer edge.   3. Remove the wheel. Lay a tape measure across the face of the rotor, through the center of the hub, and read the outside edge of the friction ring to the outside edge on the other side. You are looking for roughly 13.0 in versus 13.5 in up front — a half inch is easy to see even with a sloppy measurement.
  4. Set your caliper to measure thickness roughly 10 mm inboard of the outer edge, past the lip of ridge that wear leaves behind. Take three readings around the rotor and use the smallest.
  5. Look at the rotor hat — the raised center section. GM casts the minimum thickness right into it. If it is legible under the rust, that number beats anything you read online.
  6. Write down what you measured before you go to the computer. Do not measure and shop at the same time; that is how confirmation bias sells you the wrong rotor.

If you are measuring because something sounds wrong rather than because you are on a maintenance schedule, spend five minutes first working out what the noise your brakes are making actually indicates. A grind and a squeal point at different parts, and the fix for one is not the fix for the other.

Rear rotor thickness figures vary more between sources and between model years than the front figures do. Read the number cast into your own rotor hat before you decide to machine anything, and if it is unreadable, replace rather than resurface.

That last row is the one nobody measures and it is the one that causes the complaint. Thickness variation — the difference between the thickest and thinnest point around one rotor — is what you feel as a pulsation in the pedal. Seven ten-thousandths of an inch is a very tight tolerance. It is also why a rotor that measures fine for thickness can still need to come off.

Should I resurface these rotors or just replace them?

Replace them. GM's factory half-ton rotors carry a ferritic nitrocarburized (FNC) surface treatment for corrosion resistance, and turning a rotor on a lathe removes that layer entirely. You end up with a thinner rotor that also rusts faster, for a labor charge that is often close to the price of a new one.

This is one of those cases where the industry's old advice has quietly stopped being correct. Resurfacing made sense when rotors were heavy, expensive castings and machine time was cheap. The step that stops the new brakes squealing

New rotors and pads that squeal within a week are usually missing one thing, and it is not a part most people know to buy.

GM's service bulletin 17-NA-040 instructs technicians to apply copper paste to the pad backing plate abutments — the ends of the pad that contact the caliper bracket — covering the abutment area completely with roughly 0.10 g (0.0035 oz) at each end. The paste must never extend onto the friction material.

GM says to apply it whenever the pads are removed or replaced, not only when chasing a noise complaint. That makes it part of a rotor job, not an optional extra.

Two things worth knowing alongside it. Pressure washing removes it — GM warns that wheel cleaners or a power washer aimed at the caliper can wash the paste off and that it may need reapplying, which is why a squeal sometimes appears right after a detail. And for that particular condition — a squeal on the first few applies after the truck has sat, at low speed and light pedal, clearing after a handful of stops — GM's instruction is explicitly not to replace the pads.

Do Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade rotors interchange with the 1500?

From 2021 forward, yes on the front. The 2021–2026 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL, Escalade and Escalade ESV share the 343 mm front rotor with the 2019–2026 Silverado and Sierra 1500. Earlier full-size SUVs on the K2XX platform share the 330 mm front rotor with 2014–2018 trucks.

The reason is simple: those SUVs moved to the T1XX architecture for the 2021 model year, one generation after the pickups. So a 2020 Tahoe is a K2XX-family vehicle and a 2021 Tahoe is not, even though they look related from twenty feet away. If you are shopping by "Tahoe rotor" without a year, you have a coin flip.

Rear brakes are where this interchange gets less reliable. The full-size SUVs went to an independent rear suspension in 2021 with different rear brake hardware, and parking brake configuration differs as well. Verify the rear by part number and by measurement, not by assuming it follows the front.

What fits a Trail Boss, AT4, ZR2 or a truck with the Max Trailering package?

Off-road and trailering trims run the same rotor diameters as the rest of the half-ton line for their model year — the lift and the tires change, the brake rotors do not. Where option packages can differ is in pad compound and, on some builds, caliper hardware. Verify your specific truck by RPO code before ordering pads.

Your RPO codes are on a sticker, usually in the glovebox or on the inside of the center console lid on these trucks. It is a grid of three-character codes. Brake-related RPOs start with J. Do not assume a heavier-duty pad is the upgrade. Aggressive pad compounds bite harder when hot and worse when cold, and most half-tons spend their lives cold. Unless you tow near the truck's rating regularly or run mountain grades, the standard ceramic pad is the right choice and the cheap option really is fine here.

What about the 2500HD and 3500HD?

Heavy-duty trucks are a different conversation entirely. They use 8-lug hubs, larger rotors, and different calipers, and nothing in the chart above applies to them. If your truck has eight lug nuts per wheel, stop reading this table and shop by the specific 2500HD or 3500HD year and body style.

The confusion here is understandable, because listings frequently write "Silverado" without the trailing number and let the fitment widget sort it out. When the widget is wrong — and it is wrong often enough — you have a box of rotors that will not clear anything. Count your lugs first.

How tight do the wheels go back on?

Second, anti-seize or oil on the threads, which turns a correct torque reading into a badly over-clamped joint. Third, aftermarket wheels with conical seats and factory lug nuts, which never develop proper clamping force no matter how hard you pull.

Re-torque after 50 to 100 miles, particularly on aluminum wheels. It takes four minutes and it is the cheapest insurance in the entire job.

A short safety note

Brakes are a system where "close enough" has consequences. Support the truck on rated jack stands, never on a jack alone or on cinder blocks. Slots have a narrower real benefit and cost pad life. Coating the non-friction surfaces, on the other hand, does something you will notice every time you look at your wheels.

If you tow heavily, the useful upgrade is not a pattern of holes. It is more thermal mass, a pad compound rated for the heat you are actually generating, and fresh high-temperature brake fluid.
