What parts does a full-size GM SUV brake job actually need?

Three of those items get skipped constantly. The hardware kit is the first. Those stainless abutment clips sit between the pad ear and the caliper bracket, and they corrode, swell and bind the pad in place. A pad that cannot slide freely drags, cooks, and wears at an angle. Hardware kits are inexpensive and they usually ship in the box with better pad sets — check before you order a separate one.
The second is guide pin grease. Not anti-seize, not chassis grease, not whatever was in the door. Caliper guide pins ride inside rubber boots, and petroleum grease swells those boots until the pin seizes. Use a silicone-based caliper lubricant rated for the job.
The third is copper paste, and it is the one nobody has heard of. It has its own section below because GM is specific about it.
Rotor resurfacing is largely dead on these vehicles. Modern rotors leave the factory close enough to minimum thickness that most shops will not turn them, and a new pair often costs less than the machining labor. Plan on replacing.
The step almost everyone skips: copper paste on the pad abutments
GM's service bulletin 17-NA-040, "Brake Squeal or Squeak Noise Intermittently on Initial Brake Applies," instructs technicians to apply copper paste to completely cover the pad backing plate abutments on each end — the parts of the pad that contact the caliper bracket. GM gives a quantity: roughly 0.10 g (0.0035 oz) at each end, and its illustrations show both a correct application and an incorrect, too-light one.
The paste must not extend onto the friction material. That is the hard line.
Three things follow that change how you should plan the job.
It is not just for chasing noise. GM states the copper paste should be applied whenever the brake pads are removed or replaced. That makes it a standard part of the job, not a remedy.
Pressure washing removes it. GM warns that wheel cleaners or a power washer aimed directly at the caliper can wash the paste off, and that it may need reapplying. If a squeal shows up shortly after a detail or a touchless car wash, that is a documented mechanism rather than a coincidence.
Do not buy pads to cure that squeal. GM says so explicitly for this condition. A squeal on the first few applies after the vehicle has sat, at low speed and light pedal pressure, that clears after a handful of stops, is an abutment lubrication issue.
Add a tube to the order. It costs very little and it is the difference between a quiet brake job and one that comes back.
Which generation do you have, and why does it change the parts list?
GM has built four distinct full-size SUV platforms since 2000, and brake parts do not cross between them. Identify your platform first — 2000–2006, 2007–2014, 2015–2020, or 2021 and newer — because rotor diameter, caliper design and rear suspension all changed at those boundaries.
The 2021 redesign is the big one. The T1XX SUVs moved to an independent rear suspension, which changed the rear knuckle, the rear caliper bracket and the parking brake arrangement. Nothing from a 2020 Tahoe rear axle bolts to a 2021.

Read that rear column again. On the 2007–2020 trucks the rear rotor is physically larger than the front. If you unbox four rotors and assume the big ones go up front, you will get halfway through the job before the caliper bracket refuses to line up. Lay them out and check the diameter before you touch a lug nut.
For 2021 and newer, do not order off a generic year/model dropdown alone. Brake packages vary within the same model year, and the police-package Tahoe (PPV) runs a much larger front rotor than the retail truck. Pull the RPO code sticker — it is usually in the glovebox on these — or measure your existing rotor across the face with a tape before you commit.
Do Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade brakes interchange?
Within the same generation, yes, in most cases. Tahoe and Yukon are the same truck with different badges, Suburban and Yukon XL are the long-wheelbase versions of the same thing, and Escalade and Escalade ESV are the Cadillac trim of both. Brake parts generally carry across all six.
Where it stops being simple is the half-ton/three-quarter-ton split on the older platforms, and any factory performance package. A 2500-series Suburban or Yukon XL from the GMT800 era is a different vehicle underneath — 8-lug hubs, bigger calipers, heavier everything. The parts are not shared with a 1500.
Escalade-V and other high-output Cadillac variants are their own category entirely. If your Escalade has multi-piston fixed calipers with a brand name cast into them, you are not shopping the standard catalog. Order to the caliper, not the badge. The practical version of this rule: your parts search should include the model year, the model, the drivetrain, and — from 2021 on — the RPO brake code. Skip any one of those and you are guessing.
Ceramic or semi-metallic pads for a Tahoe or Yukon?
Ceramic for a family SUV that does not tow. Semi-metallic or a heavy-duty ceramic if you tow, haul, or live somewhere with long grades. Ceramic runs quieter and produces lighter-colored dust that does not weld itself to your wheels. Semi-metallic bites harder when hot and survives repeated heavy stops better.
The honest position is that for the majority of Tahoe and Yukon owners, a mid-grade ceramic pad is the correct answer and the expensive performance pad is money you do not need to spend. These are 5,500-pound trucks driven mostly on pavement at moderate speeds. Ceramic handles it.
The exception is real: if you pull a trailer down a mountain pass, ceramic pads can fade in a way that gets your attention badly. Towing owners should step up to a heavy-duty compound rated for it, and should expect more dust as the price of admission.
Drilled and slotted rotors are the most oversold item in this category. Cross-drilling was a solution to outgassing in bias-ply-era pad compounds, and on a street SUV the holes mostly create stress risers and a place for cracks to start. Slotted-only is a defensible middle ground. A quality plain vented rotor is the right choice for nearly everyone reading this.
Do you need new caliper bracket bolts?
Sometimes. Many GM caliper bracket bolts are torque-to-yield, meaning they stretch permanently when tightened and are specified as single-use. Others are reusable. Which one you have depends on your model year and the service procedure for it, so check before you plan on reusing them.
This is a cheap insurance item either way. Bracket bolts on a corridor of road salt come out looking rough, and they are holding the thing that stops your truck. If they are pitted, replace them regardless of what the manual says about reuse.
Caliper guide pins and their boots are the other consumable people ignore. Pull each pin, wipe it, and look at it. If it is scored, rusted, or the boot is split or hardened, replace the pin and boot as a set. A seized guide pin is the single most common cause of one pad wearing to the backing plate while the other side still looks new.
How much brake fluid does the job take, and which type?
GM specifies DOT 3 hydraulic brake fluid for these vehicles — the factory fill is ACDelco GM Original Equipment DOT 3, sold as GM part 19353126 in the 16-ounce bottle, cross-referenced as ACDelco 10-4110. Confirm the spec printed on your master cylinder reservoir cap before you pour anything in. Plan on two to three of those bottles for a full flush.
A pad-and-rotor job by itself does not strictly require new fluid. But brake fluid is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air over time, and moisture lowers the boiling point and corrodes the inside of the system from the ABS module outward. If the fluid in your reservoir looks like weak coffee instead of pale straw, flush it while everything is already apart.
Never mix in DOT 5. DOT 5 is silicone-based and is not compatible with the DOT 3 and DOT 4 glycol fluids these systems use. Caliper guide pin and bracket bolt torques vary by generation and brake code, so pull those two from the service procedure for your specific year rather than a generic chart.
That distinction matters. The lug nut figure is consistent enough across the full-size platform that you can rely on it, and it is printed in your owner's manual if you want to confirm. Caliper fastener torque is not consistent — it changed between generations and even between brake option codes on the same vehicle, with front bracket bolts in the 125–150 lb-ft neighborhood on some years and much lower figures on the rears. Guessing a number in that range is how brackets get cracked or bolts back out.

How do you do the job?
The sequence below is the general shape of a pad-and-rotor replacement on a full-size GM SUV. It is not a substitute for the service procedure for your vehicle, and the torque values you need come from that procedure, not from here.
- Break the lug nuts loose a quarter turn while the wheel is still on the ground.
- Raise the vehicle, support it on rated jack stands, and remove the wheel.
- Open the master cylinder reservoir cap so the pistons can retract without forcing fluid backward.
- Remove the two caliper guide pin bolts and lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Hang the caliper from the coil spring or frame with a hook or wire. Do not let it dangle on the flex hose.
- Slide the old pads out of the bracket and note which way the wear sensor faced.
- Remove the two caliper bracket bolts and take the bracket off.
- Remove the rotor. If it is rust-welded to the hub, thread a bolt into the two threaded jacking holes in the rotor face and tighten evenly.
- Wire-brush the hub face until it is bare metal. A rust ridge here causes measurable runout and a pulsing pedal.
- Clean the new rotor with brake cleaner to strip the shipping oil, then mount it.
- Pop the old abutment clips out of the bracket, clean the seats, and install the new hardware.
- Pull each guide pin, inspect it, clean it, and re-grease with silicone caliper lubricant. Replace anything scored.

- Install the new pads and confirm they slide freely by hand in the clips.
- Compress the caliper piston. Rear calipers with an integrated parking brake usually need to be wound in with a twisting tool, not pressed.
- Reinstall the caliper and torque the guide pin bolts to spec.
- Repeat at each corner, then bleed the system if you opened any hydraulic line or are flushing.
- With the wheels back on, pump the brake pedal until it is firm before you move the vehicle.
- Torque the lug nuts to 140 lb-ft in a star pattern, then re-check them after 50 to 100 miles.
- Bed the pads in: a series of moderate stops from around 35 mph, then a cool-down drive without sitting on the pedal at a stop.
Step 19 is the one that gets skipped and it is the one that matters. The first pedal press after a caliper reinstall is long and soft because the pistons are retracted. Find that out in the driveway, not at the end of the street.
What does not fit
Scope matters more than brand here. The following are the mismatches that generate returns:
- 2021+ T1XX rear brake parts do not fit 2015–2020 K2XX vehicles. The rear suspension is completely different.
- Police-package (PPV) Tahoe brake components do not interchange with retail Tahoe components.
- 2500-series Suburban and Yukon XL from the GMT800 era use 8-lug hubs and their own brake system. Nothing from a 1500 applies.
- Escalade-V and other high-output Cadillac variants with fixed multi-piston calipers use dedicated parts.
