U0101 is "Lost Communication With Transmission Control Module" — the module that should be reporting to the network has gone quiet. GM has written a dedicated bulletin on it, and that bulletin opens with an instruction worth reading before you spend anything: "DO NOT replace any control module, wiring harness or component until you have first isolated the cause of the condition or followed this procedure in its entirety." GM lists nine causes. Eight of them are wiring, terminals and connections.

What U0101 Means
GM's wording, taken verbatim from a GM bulletin's own code table, is "U0101: Lost Communication With Transmission Control Module (TCM)."
Modules on the high-speed network broadcast on a schedule. When the module that is supposed to be listening stops hearing the transmission control module for long enough, it records U0101 rather than continuing to act on data it can no longer confirm. The transmission then falls back to a default strategy, which is why the drivability symptoms show up alongside the code.
What the code does not tell you is why the module went quiet. A failed module and a backed-out terminal produce the identical code.
U0101 Is Not the Only GM Code for This
Worth knowing before you search anything: in the same code table where GM defines U0101, it separately lists U186B: "Lost Communication With TCM." Two different GM codes, near-identical English descriptions.
GM's bulletin on aftermarket diagnostic-port devices groups them together as the communication codes it expects to see: U0100, U0101, U186B and U1862. So a page telling you U0101 is the GM lost-communication-with-TCM code is wrong for the platforms that report U186B instead. Check which one your tool actually displayed.
The Two-Part Code Form: U0101-XX
GM's two-part scheme is real and confirmed — GM prints codes such as U0422 00 and U3000 4B in its own bulletins, and defines failure byte 71 as "Invalid Data" across all GM models from 2013 to 2022.
However, no GM-documented sub-types were found for U0101 specifically. The GM bulletins naming this code write it bare. Any 32-row table you find listing U0101-00 through -1F with distinct meanings is auto-generated boilerplate, emitted identically for every code on the sites that publish it.
Symptoms of U0101
These are GM's own words, from the condition section of its bulletin — the full list, not a selection:
- The malfunction indicator lamp may be illuminated
- Instrument panel cluster warning lamps may illuminate
- The transmission may not shift, or defaults to 2nd gear
- The door locks may cycle by themselves
- The engine may not crank intermittently
- The engine may stall (Corvette and hybrid full-size truck models)
- A driver information centre message may be displayed
- The instrument cluster gauges may fluctuate
- Applying the brakes may cause the cluster to become erratic and the chimes to sound simultaneously
- Engine cooling fan runs continuously, causing a dead 12V battery
- The malfunction indicator lamp flickers or is dim
Note "defaults to 2nd gear." Widely published U0101 symptom lists say third gear or limp mode; we could not source either to GM, along with "harsh or delayed engagement", "speedometer inoperative" and "poor fuel economy". GM's documented behaviour is second gear.

Eight of GM's nine causes are wiring, terminals, connectors or an aftermarket accessory. Only one path ends in a module, and it ends there only after a specific finding — a damaged male terminal that cannot be repaired.
The aftermarket dongle problem
GM has maintained a bulletin on this through at least ten revisions, the latest covering "2025 and prior GM passenger cars and trucks." U0101 is named in it by code. GM's mechanism: "if the device only makes connection with one CAN +, then it will cause bus errors and erratic ECU behavior."
Documented symptoms include "transmission may not shift for one key cycle (TCM in default mode)", erratic gauge readings, battery run-down and reduced power messages. GM's correction is to duplicate the concern, remove the device, retest, and refer the customer to the device supplier. These issues are not covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, and GM provides labor operation 0600014, "Suspected Tampering," at 0.2 hours.
If you run an insurance dongle, a fleet tracker or a tuner, unplug it and retest before paying for any diagnosis. It costs nothing to rule out.
The Case Where GM Says to Ignore It
One documented exception worth knowing, because it can send a diagnosis badly wrong. GM bulletin PI0269B states: "If DTC U0101 is set as active or history in the electronic brake control module, it should be ignored as it has been found to be falsely setting."
A U0101 stored in the brake module specifically is not evidence of a transmission communication fault on those platforms — it is a known false positive.
How U0101 Is Diagnosed
Required tooling, per GM: an MDI with a Techline terminal and an active TIS licence, accessed through the GDS2 icon on TIS2Web; GDS2 or Techline Connect for vehicle-wide code reading; Tech 2 on older platforms. For terminal work GM specifies the J-38125 terminal repair kit and the J-38125-28 tool. A generic code reader cannot read all modules or distinguish current from history, and it certainly cannot test terminal tension.
- Run the Diagnostic System Check — Vehicle first.
- Visual inspection before any electrical testing — GM's sequence, not an optional preliminary.
- Check the diagnostic port for an aftermarket device; remove and retest.
- Inspect the transmission 16-way connector for backed-out terminals and a properly seated TPA lock, comparing against GM's illustrations before disconnecting anything.
- Inspect the harness at the transmission case retaining clip and at the right front brake pipe on the left front frame rail.
- On a 2010–2016 Equinox or Terrain, inspect connector X411 behind and to the left of the fuel tank for corrosion.
- Use the Data Bus Diagnostic Tool for bus-level faults, then follow the bulletin.
- Only then consider a module — and only if a male terminal is damaged, since those cannot be repaired.

The shape of that list is the point. A $57 connector kit, an $11 tube of dielectric grease and a handful of tenth-of-an-hour inspection operations cover most of what GM documents for this code. We are deliberately not listing a transmission control module part number, because module part numbers are VIN and RPO specific, they require programming and setup after fitting, and GM's own instruction is not to replace one until the cause has been isolated.

A note on searching this yourself: of 28 NHTSA bulletin PDFs that surfaced for this group of communication codes, only six actually contained the code that surfaced them. Search-result titles are unreliable; the PDF has to be opened.

GM's mechanism is that a device contacting only one CAN line causes bus errors and erratic module behaviour, and it documents the transmission not shifting for a key cycle as a symptom. Unplug it and retest — it costs nothing, and GM notes these issues are not covered under warranty.
What does the -00 mean in U0101-00?
No GM-documented sub-types exist for U0101. GM's bulletins write the code bare. A -00 on your tool is the generic "no sub type information" value. The 32-row sub-type tables published elsewhere are auto-generated and carry no manufacturer attribution.
