P0036 Code on a Cadillac: HO2S Heater Control Circuit, Bank 1 Sensor 2 (Cadillac Guide)

P0036 on a Cadillac is GM's "HO2S Heater Control Circuit, Bank 1 Sensor 2." It is an electrical fault in the heater circuit of the oxygen sensor behind the catalytic converter. It is not a sign that the sensor reads oxygen badly. On a Cadillac it matters because a dead rear heater stops the catalyst and post-catalyst fuel trim tests from running, so the car cannot pass a readiness check. Two things surprised us. The well-known GM bulletin that ties P0036 to a chafed harness and a blown fuse covers the Enclave, Traverse and Acadia, and no Cadillac is on it. And the Opel-built Catera's table does not list P0036 at all.

What Does P0036 Mean on a Cadillac?

Every heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) has two parts in one body: a signal element that reports oxygen, and an electric heater that brings it to temperature quickly. P0036 concerns only the heater circuit of the downstream sensor on bank 1.

The heater gets voltage through a fuse. The engine control module (ECM) completes the circuit to ground through a low-side driver, switching it on and off to hold the sensor at temperature. The ECM watches the voltage on that control wire to decide whether the circuit is healthy.

GM's 2017 and 2019 parameter tables cover the ATS, CTS, CT6, XTS, XT5, the V-series and the Escalade 6.2L L86. They define P0036 this way:

  • The ECM sees the voltage out of range while the driver is off, which indicates an open circuit. GM's threshold is about 200 kΩ or more between the output and controller ground.
  • The test runs continuously with the ignition in crank or run, voltage above 11 volts and the engine above 400 rpm.
  • It needs 20 failures in 25 samples, at 250 milliseconds per sample.
  • It is a Type B code, normally two failing trips before the check engine light comes on.
  • GM notes that on certain controllers, P0037 (short to ground) may set alongside it.

So on a modern Cadillac, P0036 points at an open in the heater path. That can be a blown fuse, a broken or chafed wire, a loose or corroded terminal, a heater element burned open inside the sensor, or, last and rarest, the ECM driver. On a V6 or V8 Cadillac, the bank 2 rear heater circuit is P0056.

One Code, Then Three

Older Cadillacs used P0036 more broadly, and GM's tables show the change:

  • 2000 Northstar (4.6L LD8 and L37 in the Eldorado, Seville and DeVille): P0036 detected a circuit that was "open, shorted to ground or shorted to +12V." It needed 100 failures in 120 samples above 425 rpm. One code covered every circuit fault.
  • 2007 Northstar (4.6L LH2 and supercharged 4.4L LC3 in the STS, SRX V8 and XLR): P0036 still covered both "short-to-ground or open circuit" and "short to voltage," with 20 failures in 25 samples.
  • 2017 and later (ATS through Escalade): P0036 is the open. Short to ground is P0037 and short to voltage is P0038.

The practical difference: on a 2007 STS or XLR, P0036 alone does not tell you whether the circuit is open or shorted. On a 2017 CT6, it does.

The Catera (1997–2001, Opel-built 3.0L L81) is the exception. GM's 2000 Catera table lists the rear heaters only under P0141 (bank 1) and P0161 (bank 2), judged on heater resistance. We found no P0036 in it. A Catera owner reading "P0036" advice online is reading about a different system. See our Cadillac P0141 guide.

Tools for checking sensor voltage

Which Cadillacs Set P0036

We confirmed P0036 in GM's tables for:

  • The Northstar DeVille, Seville and Eldorado (2000) and STS, SRX V8 and XLR (2007)
  • The ATS 2.0L turbo, 2.5L and 3.6L, and the ATS-V
  • The CTS 2.0L turbo and 3.6L, and the CTS-V 6.2L
  • The CT6, XTS, SRX 3.6L and XT5
  • The Escalade and Escalade ESV 6.2L L86

The Lyriq and Optiq are electric and do not use it. On the four-cylinder ATS, CTS, CT6, XT4, CT4 and CT5, "Bank 1 Sensor 2" is simply the sensor after the converter.

Where Bank 1 Sensor 2 Is on a Cadillac

"Sensor 2" is downstream, after the catalytic converter. "Sensor 1" is upstream. The front heater on the same bank is P0030, so check which code you have before ordering a part.

  • 3.6L V6 in the longitudinal CTS, STS, ATS and CT6: bank 1 is the right, passenger-side bank.
  • 3.6L V6 in the transverse SRX, XTS, XT5 and XT6: bank 1 is the rear bank, toward the firewall. Its downstream sensor is usually reached from underneath.
  • Escalade V8: bank 1 is the driver's side.
  • Northstar V8: we could not confirm the bank 1 side from a GM document. Trace the harness from the sensor before you buy.

What GM Has Published for Cadillac

We searched GM's bulletin index for every Cadillac model from 1996 to 2026. Only one entry names P0036 on a Cadillac:

  • Bulletin 01366 (November 2003), 2004 SRX is indexed as "Service Engine Soon light on with O2 sensor diagnostic trouble codes P0138, P0151," later amended "to include P0030, P0036, P0050, P0056." Those are all four heater circuit codes on the V8 or V6. We could only read NHTSA's index entry, not the bulletin, so we could not confirm the cause or repair. When all four heater circuits fail together, the usual suspect is something they share, such as a fuse or a supply feed.

The GM bulletin most often quoted for P0036 is PIT5336 (October 2014). It traces P0036 and a long list of other codes to a bank 1 O2 harness chafing on an A/C hose coupling and blowing the Emission 1 fuse. Its model list is the 2013–2015 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia 3.6L LLT, and no Cadillac. The lesson still carries over: a fuse that blows again points to a short you have not found yet. But do not assume your Cadillac has that harness route.

What P0036 Blocks

GM's tables group P0036 with P0137, P0138, P0140, P0141 and P0054 in the bank 1 sensor 2 fault bundle. The downstream tests will not run while any of these is active. With P0036 set:

  • Post-catalyst fuel trim (P2096 and P2097) will not report. See our Cadillac P2096 guide.
  • Catalyst efficiency (P0420) depends on a working rear sensor.
  • Heater performance (P0141) is held off while a heater circuit code is active.

That is why P0036 matters at inspection time even when the Cadillac drives perfectly.

Symptoms of P0036

  • Check engine light on
  • Catalyst and oxygen sensor readiness monitors "not ready," which can fail an inspection
  • Usually no drivability change
  • Several heater codes at once (P0030, P0050, P0056) if a shared fuse or supply has failed
  • P0037 set alongside on some controllers

Causes and How to Confirm Each

Cause How to confirm it Notes
Open fuse or lost heater supply Sensor unplugged, key on: a test lamp from the supply terminal to ground should light If the fuse is open, find the short before replacing it
Heater element open inside the sensor Measure heater resistance at the sensor side; compare with service information Confirms the sensor itself
Broken, chafed or heat-damaged wire Inspect the full run near the exhaust; check continuity to the ECM Rear-sensor harnesses run close to the exhaust
Connector or terminal fault Look for corrosion, water and loose pin fit; wiggle-test while watching heater status A loose terminal reads as an open
ECM low-side driver Only after every circuit and the sensor test good Rare

How Is P0036 Diagnosed on a Cadillac?

  1. Record every code. All four heater codes at once point at a shared fuse or supply. That was the code pattern on the 2004 SRX entry.
  2. Identify the right sensor — bank 1, after the converter.
  3. Check the fuse that feeds the heater. If it is open, find the short before installing a new one.
  4. Unplug the sensor and check supply with a test lamp, key on.
  5. Measure heater resistance across the sensor's heater pins. An open element confirms the sensor.
  6. Test the control circuit back to the ECM for an open.
  7. Watch heater status on a scan tool with everything reconnected, moving the harness as you go.
  8. Replace the sensor only when it tests open and the circuits test good.
  9. Clear the codes and drive so the heater, catalyst and post-cat fuel trim monitors can complete.

Parts and Cost

None of the GM bulletins we could read names P0036 for a Cadillac. Have a dealer check your VIN against current bulletins rather than relying on any article, including this one.

What Other P0036 Pages Get Wrong

  • "Replace the O2 sensor." Check the fuse, supply and control circuit first. The sensor is the last suspect.
  • Quoting the Enclave harness bulletin for every GM. PIT5336 does not cover any Cadillac.
  • Applying it to a Catera. GM's Catera table uses P0141 and P0161 for the rear heaters.
  • Treating P0036 as "open only" on every Cadillac. On 2000 and 2007 Northstars it also covers shorts.
  • Confusing Sensor 1 and Sensor 2. P0036 is the sensor after the converter. The front heater is P0030.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive my Cadillac with P0036?

Generally yes in the short term, since the rear sensor does not run the main mixture. But the emissions monitors will not complete, and if a blown fuse is the cause, other parts on that fuse may be unpowered too.

Is P0036 the front or rear sensor?

Rear: bank 1, after the converter. The front heater on the same bank sets P0030.

Why does my Cadillac have P0030, P0036, P0050 and P0056 together?

All four heaters failing together points to something they share, such as a fuse or supply. GM indexed a 2004 SRX bulletin with exactly that code set, but we could not read its repair.

Which bank is bank 1 on a Cadillac V6?

The bank with cylinder 1. That is the passenger-side bank on the CTS, STS, ATS and CT6, and the firewall-side bank on the SRX, XTS, XT5 and XT6.

Will P0036 make my Cadillac fail emissions?

Very likely. The catalyst and related monitors stay "not ready" and the check engine light is on.

Is there a Chevrolet version of this guide?

Yes. Our Chevrolet P0036 guide covers the Traverse side of PIT5336.

Check the fuse, supply voltage, control circuit and heater resistance first — that is GM's order. If the heater element is open, order the rear sensor by VIN and position.
