P0141 Code on a Cadillac: O2 Sensor Heater Performance, Bank 1 Sensor 2 (Cadillac Guide)

P0141 on a modern Cadillac is GM's "O2S Heater Performance, Bank 1 Sensor 2." The engine computer has measured the electric current through the heater of the oxygen sensor behind the catalytic converter, and it is outside the range GM expects. It is a heater code, not a signal code. It matters on a Cadillac because without a working heater, the converter and post-catalyst fuel trim tests cannot be trusted, and the car will not pass a readiness check. The surprise is how much this code has changed over the years. On a 2000 DeVille or Seville, P0141 timed how long the sensor took to wake up. On the Opel-built Catera it was a resistance test. On today's ATS, CT6, XT5 or Escalade it measures heater amps.

What Does P0141 Mean on a Cadillac?

A heated oxygen sensor contains two things: a sensing element that reports oxygen in the exhaust, and a small electric heater that brings the element up to working temperature. The rear sensor sits after the converter, where exhaust alone is slow to heat it, so the heater does most of the work.

On the Cadillac engine families in GM's 2017 and 2019 parameter tables, the engine control module (ECM) monitors the heater current through its low-side driver. It compares that current with the range expected for the sensor fitted. If the current is too low or too high, a failure counter increases:

  • In the 2017 table covering the ATS, CTS, CT6, XTS, XT5, the V-series and the Escalade L86, the expected window is roughly 0.4 to 4.3 amps. The code needs 8 failures in 10 samples.
  • In the 2019 common table for the same families, the window is 0.3 to 2.9 amps. The 2.0L turbo's single-bank entry uses 0.3 to 2.5 amps.
  • The test only runs after the heater warm-up delay has finished, the front heater is being driven, and the conditions have held for more than 120 seconds. System voltage must be above about 10–11 volts.
  • It is a Type B code, which normally needs two failing trips before the check engine light comes on.

So P0141 asks: is the heater drawing the current a healthy heater should? A heater that has gone open, partly failed, or is fed by a poor connection reads low. A heater with an internal short reads high. Outright circuit faults on the same wire usually set the circuit codes P0036, P0037 or P0038 instead. On a V6 or V8 Cadillac, the bank 2 rear heater equivalent is P0161.

How the Test Changed: Northstar, Catera, Today

If you own an older Cadillac, the meaning of P0141 depends on when your car was built. GM's own tables show three different tests:

  • 2000 Northstar (4.6L LD8 and L37 in the Eldorado, Seville and DeVille): GM called P0141 "HO2S Heater Circuit (bank 1 sensor 2)." The test measured how long the rear sensor took to "become active" after a cold start. That meant how long its voltage took to move ±150 millivolts away from its bias, judged against a table based on engine airflow, up to about 200 seconds. A slow-warming sensor set the code. In the same table, the wiring itself was checked separately by P0036.
  • 2000 Catera (Opel-built 3.0L L81): GM's table for the Catera uses European-style tests. P0141 is "Heater Rear Bank 1," judged on heater resistance with the converter between about 330 and 520°C. The rear bank 2 heater is P0161. We found no P0036 in that table, so on a Catera, P0141 covers a rear heater fault that a later GM engine would report another way.
  • 2007 Northstar (4.6L LH2 and supercharged 4.4L LC3 in the STS, SRX V8 and XLR): P0141 has become "O2S Heater Performance" and measures current. It sets below 0.25 amps or above 3.125 amps, 8 failures in 10 samples, after at least 180 seconds of engine run time.

The modern ATS, CTS, CT6, XTS, XT5 and Escalade tables continue that current-based approach. The repair logic is the same across all of them: supply, ground path, connector, then the heater element.

Which Cadillacs Set P0141

P0141 applies to every gasoline Cadillac with a rear oxygen sensor. We confirmed it in GM's tables for the Northstar DeVille, Seville and Eldorado, the Catera, the 2007 STS, SRX and XLR, and the 2015–2019 groups. Those groups cover the ATS, CTS, CT6, XTS, XT5, SRX, ATS-V, CTS-V and Escalade. The Lyriq and Optiq are electric and do not use it.

One detail in GM's tables: the common P0141 entry in the 2017 and 2019 files is marked "For Dual Bank Exhaust Only." Single-bank engines such as the 2.0L turbo have their own entry with slightly different limits. That is why thresholds you read online may not match your Cadillac.

Where Bank 1 Sensor 2 Is on a Cadillac

"Sensor 2" is the sensor after the catalytic converter. "Sensor 1" is before it. The front heater on the same bank is P0135, so mixing them up is the most common way to buy the wrong part.

"Bank 1" is the side of the engine with cylinder 1:

  • Four-cylinders (ATS, CTS and CT6 2.0L turbo, XT4, CT4, CT5, and the 2.0L turbo XT5/XT6): there is one bank, and the rear sensor is the one downstream of the converter.
  • 3.6L V6 in the longitudinal CTS, STS, ATS and CT6: bank 1 is the right, passenger-side bank.
  • 3.6L V6 in the transverse SRX, XTS, XT5 and XT6: bank 1 is the rear bank, toward the firewall.
  • Escalade V8: bank 1 is the driver's side.
  • Northstar V8: we could not confirm the bank 1 side from a GM document. Trace the harness from the connector you are testing to the sensor before buying parts.

What GM Has Published for Cadillac

We searched GM's bulletin index for every Cadillac from 1996 to 2026. Two documents name P0141 on Cadillac models:

  • Bulletin 01585 (2004 CTS) is indexed as "Post O2 Water Intrusion." It lists P0137, P0138, P0140 and P0141 with the bank 2 rear codes and two others. We could only read NHTSA's index entry, not the bulletin itself, so treat the details as unconfirmed. The pattern is plausible: water inside a rear sensor or its connector affects both the signal and the heater.
  • 20-NA-065 (August 2022) covers all 2000–2022 GM gasoline vehicles and lists P0141 among more than 30 fuel trim and oxygen sensor codes. It is about finding small intake and exhaust leaks, including "around the O2 sensor embossments," with GM's leak detectors or low-pressure air and soapy water. A leak at the sensor boss lets water and air into the sensor area.

We found no Cadillac bulletin that replaces an ECM for P0141. The documented direction is the sensor, its connector and the exhaust around it.

Symptoms of P0141

  • Check engine light on
  • Catalyst and oxygen sensor readiness monitors "not ready," which can fail an emissions inspection
  • Usually no drivability change, because the rear sensor does not run the main fuel mixture
  • Companion rear-sensor codes such as P0137, P0138 or P0140 if water or heat damage has reached the sensor
  • P0161 at the same time on a V6 or V8 if a shared fuse or supply is the problem

Causes and How to Confirm Each

Cause How to confirm it Notes
Heater element failed or degraded Unplug the sensor and measure heater resistance; compare with service information for your engine The most common cause once wiring checks out
Poor connection or corroded terminals Inspect for green corrosion, water, heat damage and loose pin fit; wiggle-test while watching heater data Bulletin 01585 (2004 CTS) is indexed as water intrusion — unconfirmed details
Weak supply voltage or bad ground path Check the heater supply with a test lamp under load, not just a meter A resistive supply lowers current and can set P0141
Exhaust leak at the sensor boss Low-pressure smoke or air and soapy water (20-NA-065) Also skews the rear signal
Wrong or non-GM replacement sensor Compare part number and heater spec with the original GM's limits are calibrated "for the released sensor"
ECM driver fault Only after every circuit and the sensor test good Rare

How Is P0141 Diagnosed on a Cadillac?

  1. Record every code. If P0036, P0037 or P0038 is also set, fix that circuit fault first. If P0161 is set too, look for something the two banks share.
  2. Identify the right sensor: bank 1, after the converter. Use the bank notes above for your engine.
  3. Inspect the connector and harness for water, corrosion, melted insulation and contact with the exhaust.
  4. Measure heater resistance at the sensor side of the connector, and compare it with the value in service information for your VIN.
  5. Check supply and control with a test lamp, key on, sensor unplugged.
  6. Look at heater data on a scan tool after the engine has run for a few minutes, moving the harness as you watch.
  7. Leak-check the exhaust around the sensor boss if the sensor or connector shows signs of water or soot.
  8. Replace the sensor only when the wiring and supply test good, using the GM-specified part for your VIN.
  9. Clear the code and drive. The test needs several minutes of running time before it reports.

Parts and Cost

Repair What it involves Cost picture
Connector cleaning or repair Corroded or water-logged terminals Modest
Harness repair Heat-damaged or chafed wiring near the exhaust Modest to moderate
Rear oxygen sensor When the heater element has failed Moderate part; access varies, and V6 rear-bank sensors can be awkward
Exhaust boss or gasket repair When a leak at the sensor is found Modest to moderate
Front sensor fitted for a rear-sensor code What happens when Sensor 1 and Sensor 2 are confused Money spent with the fault still there

What Other P0141 Pages Get Wrong

  • "P0141 is a wiring short." On modern Cadillacs it is a heater performance test. Hard circuit faults usually set P0036, P0037 or P0038.
  • One definition for every year. GM's P0141 was a warm-up timer on the 2000 Northstar and a resistance test on the Catera before it became a current test.
  • Confusing Sensor 1 and Sensor 2. P0141 is the rear sensor. The front heater is P0135.
  • Saying bank 1 is always the passenger side. On a transverse 3.6L Cadillac it is the firewall bank, and on the Escalade it is the driver's side.
  • Ignoring the connector. GM's own Cadillac index entry for this code is about water intrusion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive my Cadillac with P0141?

Usually yes in the short term. The rear sensor does not run the main mixture. But your catalyst and oxygen sensor monitors will not complete, so the car may fail an inspection.

Is P0141 the front or rear oxygen sensor?

Rear. Sensor 2 is after the converter on bank 1. On a V6 or V8 Cadillac, the rear sensor on bank 2 sets P0161.

Why does my Catera set P0141 when other GM cars set P0036?

GM's 2000 Catera table uses an Opel-style resistance test and lists P0141 and P0161 for the rear heaters. We found no P0036 in that table.

Will a new sensor fix P0141?

Only if the heater element has failed. Check the connector, supply and ground first. A corroded terminal lowers heater current just like a weak heater.

Why did P0141 take a while to come back after I cleared it?

GM's test waits for the heater warm-up to finish and for conditions to hold for more than two minutes, and on older Northstars it ran only after a cold start.

Is there a general GM guide for P0141?

Yes. Our GM P0141 guide covers the code across Chevrolet, GMC and Buick. For the related circuit code, see our Cadillac P0036 guide.
