P0131 on a GMC is GM's "O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage, Bank 1 Sensor 1" — the oxygen sensor ahead of the catalytic converter, the one that steers the fuel mixture, is reporting a signal pinned at the bottom of its range. GM's own tables for the Sierra, Yukon, Savana, Canyon and Envoy describe the test as a check for a circuit "shorted to low," so wiring comes before the sensor. The GMC surprise is how many of GM's documented causes are not the sensor at all: a harness rubbing an A/C fitting and power steering fluid soaking the wiring on the Acadia 3.6L, and loose intake manifold bolts on the 2.5L Canyon and 2.0T Acadia.

What Does P0131 Mean on a GMC?
A conventional oxygen sensor swings between roughly 0.1 V (lean) and about 0.9 V (rich) several times a second in closed loop, and the engine control module (ECM) trims fuel from that swing. Sensor 1 is the upstream sensor.
P0131 sets when that signal sits at the floor, below a few tens of millivolts, during conditions where it should be switching. Because GM only runs the test while the engine is in closed loop with the commanded mixture close to stoichiometric, a genuinely lean engine should not be able to drag the signal that low for long — a lean engine sets P0171. A reading stuck near zero points first at the circuit: a signal wire grounded through chafed insulation, a contaminated harness, or a damaged connector.
What GM's GMC Tables Say
GM publishes the exact test in its OBD parameter tables, grouped by engine family. The numbers changed over the years, which is one reason generic "below 0.1 V" advice does not match what a GMC actually does:
| GM table | GMC engines covered | P0131 threshold |
|---|---|---|
| 2008, group 07 | Sierra/Yukon 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L; Sierra/Savana 4.3L LU3; Canyon 5.3L LH8; Envoy 5.3L LH6 | Below 50 mV, 450 failures in a 480-sample test, 100 ms loop |
| 2016, group 07A | Sierra 4.3L LV3, 5.3L L83, 6.2L L86; Yukon 5.3L/6.2L; Savana 4.8L L20 and 6.0L | Below 40 mV, 285 of 350 samples, closed loop, Type B |
| 2019, group 03B | Sierra 4.3L LV3, 5.3L L82/L84, 6.2L L87, 2.7T L3B; Canyon 3.6L LGZ; Acadia 2.5L | Below 40 mV, 285 of 350 samples (common table) |
| 2019, group 03A | Terrain 1.5T LYX and 2.0T LTG; Canyon 2.5L LCV | Below 40 mV conventional version, plus a separate wide-range (WRAF) version |
The 2016 table spells out the guard rails. The test only runs with the fuel system in closed loop, the equivalence ratio between 0.9922 and 1.0137 (essentially stoichiometric), air per cylinder between 175 and 700 mg, system voltage above 10 V, all injectors enabled, and no throttle, MAP, EVAP, injector or ethanol-sensor faults active. GM's purpose line is one sentence: "This DTC determines if the O2 sensor circuit is shorted to low." It is a Type B code, so the light normally needs two consecutive failing trips.
The WRAF version matters on newer turbo GMCs. On engines with a wide-range air/fuel sensor, GM's 2019 tables define P0131 as the sensor's interface chip reporting a short to ground on the pump current, reference cell or reference ground circuit (any of them below about 150 mV), and that version will not run while P0135, P0030, P0031 or P0032 is active. A WRAF sensor and a switching sensor are different parts — order by VIN.

Which GMCs Set P0131
Every gasoline GMC with a front oxygen sensor can set it: Sierra and Sierra HD, Yukon and Yukon XL, Savana, Envoy and Envoy XL, Canyon (Atlas 2.8L/2.9L/3.5L/3.7L, 5.3L, 2.5L, 3.6L and 2.7T), Terrain and Acadia. On four- and five-cylinder engines there is one bank, so P0131 is simply "the front sensor." On V6 and V8 GMCs, P0131 is the bank 1 front sensor and P0151 is its bank 2 twin.
Duramax diesels are a separate system, and the Hummer EV and Sierra EV have no oxygen sensors.
The Acadia 3.6L Wiring Bulletins
The Acadia with the 3.6L LLT is the GMC with the most documentation on this code, and none of it starts with a new sensor.
2013–2015 Acadia — PIT5336 (October 2014). GM lists P0131 among roughly thirty oxygen sensor and purge codes and warns the Emission 1 fuse may be found open. The cause: the engine harness to the bank 1 oxygen sensor chafing on the A/C hose coupling at the back side of the engine. GM's fix is wiring only — repair the damaged circuits, insulate the harness, pull it away from the coupling and tie-strap it to the main harness.
2016 Acadia and 2017 Acadia Limited — PIP5516A, then bulletin 18-NA-009. GM's subject line lists P0032, P0131, P0132, P0133, P0137, P0171 and P2096 as a "repeat oxygen sensor failure." Customers may report rough idle or low power. GM found power steering fluid leaking from the hose above the bank 1 oxygen sensor harness, contaminating the wiring and skewing the readings. If the leak is confirmed, GM replaces three items: the bank 1 sensor 1 (part 12634064 in GM's bulletin), the power steering gear inlet hose (22912855) and the engine wiring harness. PIP5516A allowed 9.0 labor hours.
18-NA-009 (April 2019) replaced the earlier PI and is the one to quote at a dealer. Note how it names the models: the 2016 Acadia and the 2017 Acadia Limited (VIN codes R and V) — the carry-over first-generation Acadia sold alongside the new 2017 model. The redesigned 2017 Acadia is not on that bulletin.
Canyon 2.5L and Acadia 2.0T: Loose Intake Bolts
GM's PIP5529B (September 2019) names the 2015–2017 Canyon with the 2.5L LCV and the 2017 Acadia with the 2.0L turbo LTG. Customers may report a check engine light, hesitation or a stall, with any combination of P0068, P0101, P0106, P0131, P0137, P0171, P0324, P0326, P0331 and P0506.
GM's instruction: if service information does not lead to a fix, check the intake manifold bolts for looseness. If they are loose, remove one bolt at a time, add medium-strength threadlocker and torque them in sequence to specification; do not replace the gasket unless it still leaks after torquing. GM allows 0.4 hours. Unmetered air leaves extra oxygen in the exhaust, which is exactly what a front sensor reports.
Wrong or Aftermarket Front Sensors
GM bulletin 19-NA-196 (September 2019) covers the 2010–2017 Terrain 2.4L (LAF/LEA) with a stumble or stall after startup. GM traced it to a faulty aftermarket or incorrect upstream oxygen sensor reading high — 800 mV or more — so the ECM leaned the engine unnecessarily. The bulletin does not name P0131, but the lesson carries over: a sensor for the wrong application or position can read wrong. If the front sensor has been replaced before, confirm the part number against your VIN before chasing anything else.
Where Bank 1 Sensor 1 Is on a GMC
Sensor 1 is upstream, between the engine and the first catalytic converter.
- Sierra, Yukon, Savana and Envoy V8s, and the 4.3L V6: bank 1 is the bank with cylinder 1 — the driver side. The sensor sits in the driver-side exhaust ahead of the converter.
- Acadia 3.6L and Terrain 3.6L: in these transverse installations bank 1 is the rear bank, toward the firewall — which is why both Acadia bulletins describe the harness "at the back side of the engine."
- Terrain 1.5T/2.0T, Acadia 2.0T and 2.5L, Canyon 2.5L and 2.7T, and the Atlas four- and five-cylinders: one bank; the sensor sits just after the turbocharger or exhaust manifold.
- Canyon 3.6L (2017 and later): a longitudinal V6 — confirm which side is bank 1 in service information for your VIN.
Symptoms of P0131
- Check engine light on
- Rough idle, hesitation or low power in some cases — this sensor controls fueling (18-NA-009 lists rough idle and low power)
- Stall or hesitation on a 2015–2017 Canyon 2.5L or 2017 Acadia 2.0T with loose intake bolts (PIP5529B)
- Poorer fuel economy
- Many oxygen sensor and purge codes at once if a shared fuse has blown (2013–2015 Acadia)
- Companion codes such as P0132, P0133, P0171 or P2096 on the same bank
Causes and How to Confirm Each
| Cause | How to confirm it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Signal circuit shorted to ground | Unplug the sensor; check the signal circuit for continuity to ground | GM's own description of the test |
| Harness chafed on the A/C coupling | Inspect the bank 1 harness behind the engine; check the Emission 1 fuse | 2013–2015 Acadia 3.6L (PIT5336) |
| Power steering fluid on the O2 wiring | Look for fluid from the P/S inlet hose above the bank 1 harness | 2016 Acadia, 2017 Acadia Limited (18-NA-009) |
| Loose intake manifold bolts | Check bolt torque after normal diagnosis; smoke-test the intake | 2015–2017 Canyon 2.5L, 2017 Acadia 2.0T (PIP5529B) |
| Exhaust leak ahead of the sensor | Smoke or low-pressure air into the tailpipe; soap the joints and sensor boss | Outside air drives the reading low |
| Connector damage or corrosion | Inspect terminals and seals; wiggle test while watching the signal | Underbody connectors on trucks take water and salt |
| Wrong or failed front sensor | Part number vs. VIN catalog; signal will not rise when fuel is added with a good circuit | See 19-NA-196 on incorrect sensors |

How Is P0131 Diagnosed on a GMC?
- Record every code and freeze frame. P0131 with P0151 (both banks low) points away from one sensor and toward something shared — a leak, a fuel delivery problem or a fuse.
- Check the VIN for bulletins. On an Acadia 3.6L, PIT5336 or 18-NA-009; on a 2015–2017 Canyon 2.5L or 2017 Acadia 2.0T, PIP5529B.
- Check the fuse that feeds the O2 heaters and purge valve. If it is open, find the short before replacing it.
- Read fuel trims and the live front sensor. In closed loop the signal should switch quickly; a trace stuck near zero is the P0131 picture.
- Add fuel briefly (or use a scan tool fuel-control test). A good sensor goes rich; a grounded circuit does not move.
- Inspect the harness and connector along the full run — behind the engine on an Acadia, along the frame rail and exhaust on a Sierra or Yukon.
- Unplug and test the circuit for a short to ground and for continuity back to the ECM.
- Check for exhaust leaks ahead of the sensor and intake leaks after the MAF.
- Replace the sensor only when the circuit tests good — with the correct type and position for your VIN.
- Clear and verify over two drive cycles; GM's test is Type B.
Parts and Cost
| Repair | What it involves | Cost picture |
|---|---|---|
| Harness repair and re-routing | Repair, insulate and secure chafed circuits (PIT5336) | Often cheaper than a sensor |
| Fuse | Only after the short is found | Pennies |
| Intake bolt re-torque | Threadlocker and torque sequence (PIP5529B) | Small — 0.4 hours in GM's PI |
| Front oxygen sensor | When the circuit tests good and the sensor will not respond | Moderate; WRAF sensors usually cost more |
| P/S hose, sensor and engine harness (Acadia) | Per 18-NA-009 when fluid has soaked the wiring | Large — 9.0 labor hours in PIP5516A |
| Exhaust leak repair | Gasket, flange or manifold ahead of the sensor | Modest to moderate |

What Other P0131 Pages Get Wrong
- "Replace the upstream O2 sensor." GM's GMC documents point to chafed wiring, fluid-soaked wiring and loose intake bolts before a sensor.
- "It means the engine is lean." GM only runs the test in closed loop near the correct mixture. A lean engine is P0171; a signal stuck below 40–50 mV is a circuit question.
- Quoting one voltage for every GMC. GM's tables moved from 50 mV (2008) to 40 mV (2016 and later), and WRAF engines use a different test altogether.
- Getting the bank wrong. On a Sierra or Yukon V8, bank 1 is the driver side; on the Acadia 3.6L it is the firewall side.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive my GMC with P0131?
Usually for a short time, but this sensor runs the fuel mixture. Expect worse economy and possibly rough running, and do not tow heavy or make long trips until it is diagnosed.
Is P0131 the upstream or downstream sensor?
Upstream — Bank 1 Sensor 1, before the catalytic converter. The downstream low-voltage code is P0137.
Which side is bank 1 on a Sierra or Yukon?
The driver side, on both the V8s and the 4.3L V6. On a 3.6L Acadia it is the rear bank, toward the firewall.
Why does my Acadia keep eating front O2 sensors?
On a 2016 Acadia or 2017 Acadia Limited, GM's 18-NA-009 found power steering fluid leaking onto the bank 1 O2 wiring. GM replaces the hose and the engine harness along with the sensor; a sensor alone will not last.
Why does my 2013–2015 Acadia have P0131 and a dozen other codes?
GM's PIT5336: the bank 1 O2 harness chafes on the A/C hose coupling behind the engine and can blow the Emission 1 fuse, taking out other O2 and purge circuits. Repair the harness first.
My 2.5L Canyon stalls and shows P0131 and P0171. Is that one problem?
It can be. GM's PIP5529B lists that combination on 2015–2017 Canyon 2.5L trucks and points to loose intake manifold bolts once normal diagnosis is complete.
Should I fix heater codes first?
Yes. GM's tests wait for heater warm-up, and the WRAF version of P0131 will not run while P0135, P0030, P0031 or P0032 is active.
