P0441 Code on a Cadillac: EVAP Incorrect Purge Flow (Cadillac Guide)

P0441 is the generic code for "Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow" — and on a Cadillac it belongs to a very short list of cars. In GM's published diagnostic tables, the only Cadillacs that use P0441 are the 1996–1997 Northstar DeVille, Seville and Eldorado, where it means the purge solenoid is stuck closed and a purge vacuum switch saw no flow. GM dropped it from the Northstar for 1998, and its 1998 Catera table even says P0441 has "no function at all" on that car. So if a generic scanner shows P0441 on any newer Cadillac, the first job is to find out what code the car really stored.

What Does P0441 Mean on a Cadillac?

Your fuel tank gives off gasoline vapor. The evaporative emission (EVAP) system stores it in a charcoal canister, and the engine computer opens a purge solenoid to draw that vapor into the engine and burn it. "Incorrect purge flow" means the computer commanded purge and did not see the result it expected.

On the 1996–1997 Northstar cars, GM watched purge with a simple device: an evaporative purge vacuum switch in the purge line. When the solenoid opens, engine vacuum reaches the switch and it changes state. GM's 1996 table calls P0441 "Evap. Emission Control System – Incorrect Purge Flow" and says the diagnostic "detects a purge solenoid stuck closed by monitoring the Evap. purge vac. switch state." GM's 1997 table names the same code "Evaporative Purge – Low Purge Flow."

So on these Cadillacs, P0441 does not mean a leak. It means vacuum isn't getting through the purge path — a solenoid that won't open, a blocked or disconnected hose, or a switch that isn't reporting.

For the Chevrolet side of this code, including the trucks and Corvettes that shared the 1997–1998 logic, see our Chevrolet P0441 guide.

Which Cadillacs Use P0441

We checked GM's published OBD tables for every Cadillac engine from 1996 to 2025. The 1996 Northstar table is a scanned image, so we read it by text recognition; every other year was searched directly.

Cadillac and engine Uses P0441? What GM's tables show
1996–1997 DeVille, Seville, Eldorado (Northstar LD8/L37) Yes Purge solenoid stuck closed, seen by the purge vacuum switch
1998–2003 DeVille, Seville, Eldorado (Northstar) No Stuck-closed purge folded into P0440; leaking purge is P1441
1997–2001 Catera (Opel-built 3.0L L81) No 1998 table: P0441 "no function at all"
1999–2002 Escalade No Uses P0440 and P1441
2003-and-later CTS, SRX, STS, XLR, DTS, ATS, XTS, CT6, XT4, XT5, XT6, CT4, CT5, Escalade No Purge faults appear as P0496, P0455, P0443 and related codes
2011 SRX 2.8L turbo (LAU, shared with Saab) No Not in GM's 2011 table for that engine

The Catera note is worth quoting. GM's 1998 Catera table has a section called "Codes skipped from old listing," which says: "P0441 no function at all, description was put to the wrong code. Description from old listing fits to code P0440." In plain terms, an earlier Catera document had attached the purge-flow description to the wrong code, and GM corrected it. If you've read that a Catera sets P0441, that is the likely source.

Tools for testing purge flow

How the 1996–1997 Northstar Test Works

GM's 1997 table for the 4.6L Northstar (L37 and LD8) lists three purge codes side by side:

  • P0441 — Low Purge Flow. The purge vacuum switch reads low for more than 10 seconds continuously while the purge solenoid is commanded above 65% duty cycle. Conditions include manifold pressure between 30 and 60 kPa, engine vacuum above 25 kPa and barometric pressure above 72 kPa. It takes three failures, and it is a Type B code — two trips before the light comes on.
  • P1441 — High Purge Flow. The switch reads high (vacuum present) for more than 10 seconds while purge is commanded below 5%: the solenoid is stuck open.
  • P1645 — Canister Purge Output. An electrical fault in the purge solenoid driver circuit.

The 1996 table, as far as we could read it, uses the same pair — P0441 for a solenoid stuck closed and P1441 for continuous open purge — and adds a P1442 entry tied to the purge vacuum switch itself.

Because the test depends on that switch, a P0441 on these cars can be the switch or its hose rather than the solenoid. Check both.

The Codes Newer Cadillacs Use

From 1998 on, GM stopped using a purge vacuum switch on the Northstar and started judging purge from fuel tank vacuum. The same two problems — purge blocked and purge leaking — moved to other codes:

Problem 1998–2003 Cadillac code 2004-and-later Cadillac code
Purge solenoid stuck closed or blocked line P0440 (GM: "large leak or purge blockage") P0455 (same wording)
Purge solenoid leaking or stuck open P1441 "continuous open purge flow" (Northstar, Escalade) P0496 "flow during non-purge" (also on the 2003 CTS)
Purge solenoid circuit P0443 or P1645 P0443 and related circuit codes

For those codes, see our Cadillac guides to P0440, P0455 and P0496.

Cadillac Purge Valve Coverages

No GM coverage names P0441 on a Cadillac, but if your real problem is the purge valve, these are worth a VIN check:

  • Special Coverage 09205 (March 2010) — 2006 CTS, SRX and STS with the 3.6L V6 and the 2006 CTS 2.8L. GM's owner letter says the purge solenoid "may stick open or closed." Coverage ran 10 years or 120,000 miles, so it has passed for practical purposes.
  • Special Coverage 18029 (June 2018) — 2015 ATS, CTS, SRX and XTS, for an inoperative purge solenoid that can cause no-start, idle stall, hesitation, a ticking noise or idle variation, often right after refueling. 10 years or 120,000 miles, part 12690512; that window has largely run out.
  • Special Coverage N222369620 (June 2022) — 2019 XTS with the 3.6L, for a purge valve that may not fully close, causing rough running, hesitation or stalling at idle. 15 years or 150,000 miles, part 12690512 — still well inside the term.

Under each, the dealer diagnoses first; the valve is replaced free only if testing leads to it. A dealer VIN check costs nothing.

Symptoms of P0441

  • Check engine light, usually the only symptom on a 1996–1997 Northstar
  • Fuel vapor smell if vapor can't be purged from the canister
  • On newer Cadillacs with a purge valve stuck open (the coverage conditions above): rough idle, hesitation or stalling, often after a fill-up

Causes and How to Confirm Each

Cause How to confirm it Notes
Purge solenoid stuck closed Command purge on; vacuum should reach the canister side GM's stated P0441 condition on 1996–1997 Northstar
Purge vacuum switch or its hose Apply vacuum to the switch and watch its state on a scan tool The test depends on this switch
Disconnected, kinked or cracked purge hose Inspect the route from intake to canister; smoke test Common after engine work
Low engine vacuum Check vacuum at idle GM's test needs engine vacuum above 25 kPa
Wrong code read on a newer Cadillac Re-read with GM descriptions No 1998-and-later Cadillac table lists P0441

Purge valves and lines

How Is P0441 Diagnosed on a Cadillac?

  1. Confirm the model year and the code. On anything newer than a 1997 Northstar, re-read with a GM-capable scanner; the stored code is probably P0455, P0496, P0440 or P1441.
  2. Check your VIN for open coverages, especially on a 2019 XTS.
  3. On a 1996–1997 Northstar, inspect the purge hoses and the purge vacuum switch hose for splits, kinks or disconnection.
  4. Command the purge solenoid with a bidirectional tool, if yours supports the car, and confirm vacuum reaches the canister line.
  5. Test the purge vacuum switch by applying vacuum and watching its state.
  6. Check the solenoid circuit if P1645 or P0443 is present — that's electrical, not flow.
  7. Replace only the part that fails a test, then clear the code and drive. GM's 1997 logic needs three failures, so a fix is confirmed only after several drives.

Parts and Cost

None of these GM documents names P0441 on a Cadillac other than the diagnostic tables themselves. Have a dealer check your VIN for open coverages rather than relying on any article, including this one.

What Other P0441 Pages Get Wrong

  • "P0441 is common on Cadillacs." GM's tables show it only on 1996–1997 Northstar cars.
  • "P0441 means the purge valve is leaking." On the Cadillacs that use it, it means purge is stuck closed. A leaking purge valve is P1441 or P0496.
  • "The Catera sets P0441." GM's own 1998 Catera table says the code has no function on that car.
  • "Replace the purge valve." On a 1996–1997 Northstar the vacuum switch and hoses are part of the test and fail too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Cadillacs actually use P0441?

In GM's published tables, only the 1996–1997 DeVille, Seville and Eldorado with the Northstar V8. Later Cadillacs report purge problems under other codes.

My 2014 SRX shows P0441 on a cheap scanner. What does it mean?

GM's tables for that era don't list P0441 for any Cadillac engine. Re-read the code with a tool that shows GM descriptions — P0496 or P0455 are the usual purge-related codes on newer Cadillacs.

Is P0441 serious?

Not for the engine. On a 1996–1997 Northstar it means vapor isn't being purged, which can cause a fuel smell and an emissions test failure.

Is the purge vacuum switch the same as the purge valve?

No. The solenoid opens the purge path; the switch only reports whether vacuum reached it. GM's 1996–1997 P0441 test depends on the switch, so a bad switch or hose can set the code.

Is my Cadillac's purge valve covered by GM?

Possibly. GM has had purge coverages for the 2006 CTS, SRX and STS, the 2015 ATS, CTS, SRX and XTS, and the 2019 XTS. Only the 2019 XTS coverage is clearly still running; a dealer VIN check is free.

Why did GM stop using P0441?

From 1998 GM judged purge from fuel tank vacuum instead of a purge switch, so a blocked purge path became part of the large-leak test (P0440, later P0455) and a leaking purge valve got its own code.
