P0445 Code: EVAP Purge Control Valve Circuit Shorted (GM Guide)

P0445 is "Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Shorted." It is the purge side of the EVAP system — the valve that lets stored fuel vapour into the engine to be burned — and it is the counterpart to P0449, which covers the vent valve at the other end of the system. The distinction matters more than most pages let on, because a purge valve that fails open causes engine-side symptoms that have nothing to do with emissions: rough idle, stalling, and hard starting right after you fill up.

What Does P0445 Mean?

The EVAP system captures fuel vapour from the tank in a charcoal canister rather than venting it to atmosphere. When conditions are right, the engine draws that vapour in and burns it. The component that meters it is the EVAP purge solenoid valve.

On GM applications, the purge solenoid valve is mounted on top of the intake manifold, and it allows manifold vacuum to purge the canister through its vacuum port. The control module supplies a ground to energize the valve — purge ON — and that control is pulse width modulated, switched on and off several times a second rather than simply opened and closed. That PWM detail matters: the module is constantly metering flow, not just toggling a gate.

P0445 sets when the module detects a short in that control circuit. That could be a short to ground or to voltage in the wiring, or an internal short within the solenoid itself.

One GM note worth carrying into the repair: the purge solenoid valve's isolator and mounting fastener must never be substituted. They are there to manage vibration and noise transmission into the manifold, and generic hardware is not an equivalent.

Purge Valve vs Vent Valve — Two Solenoids, Opposite Ends

The EVAP system is bracketed by two solenoids, and confusing them sends people to the wrong end of the vehicle.

That last row is the practical takeaway. A vent valve fault is generally an emissions-only problem. A purge valve fault can be something you feel through the steering wheel, because the purge line connects directly to the intake manifold — so a valve stuck open is an unmetered air and fuel-vapour path into a running engine.

Stuck Open vs Stuck Closed — GM's Counterintuitive Rule

This is the single most useful piece of GM documentation on the purge valve, and it runs opposite to most people's intuition.

GM bulletin 21-NA-124 is a diagnostic tip covering P0442 and P0455 across Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC passenger cars and trucks, model years 2000 through 2023, all gasoline engines. That is about as broad a coverage table as GM publishes. It states:

Read that carefully. A purge valve stuck OPEN produces the small leak code. A purge valve stuck CLOSED produces the large leak code. Most people would guess the opposite, or assume "stuck closed" simply means no purging and no code at all.

The reason is that P0455 is set by large leak or purge blockage — the module cannot draw the system down to test it, and a valve that will not open looks the same as a system that will not hold. Knowing this lets you predict which failure mode you are looking for before you ever touch the valve.

GM adds a practical tip: some leaks are only noticeable under pressure and some only under vacuum, so check both ways. And cycling the purge and vent solenoids with a scan tool while inspecting may reveal a sticking valve — a functional test rather than an electrical one, which is exactly what a valve that shorts intermittently needs.

GM's Seven Critical Connections

Before condemning the valve, 21-NA-124 says it is crucial to investigate whether the EVAP system was properly assembled, and that all purge connections must be inspected for proper installation. GM then lists seven critical connections that could lead to these codes:

  1. Purge tube to purge valve (at the intake manifold)
  2. Purge tube to chassis EVAP line (at the rear of the engine, near the transmission)
  3. Chassis EVAP line to canister (at the canister)
  4. Fuel tank load line to canister (at the canister)
  5. Vent valve line to vent valve (at the vent valve)
  6. Fuel tank load line jumper connection (near the fuel tank)
  7. Fuel tank cap closed properly (at the refuel compartment)

GM's assessment: it is likely that one of these connections is not properly seated, or the line itself is damaged. Inspect for damage or wear along the lines while you are at each connection, and confirm anything suspicious with a smoke test.

GM then gives an explicit diagnostic order, to be followed in chronological order:

  1. Investigate that all EVAP lines are properly installed and fully seated
  2. Investigate for any damage on the EVAP lines
  3. Investigate potential vent valve malfunction
  4. Investigate potential purge valve malfunction

The purge valve is step four of four. And GM's parts information for this bulletin reads, in full: no parts are required for this repair. That is GM saying, in its own document, that the most common resolution here is a connection rather than a component.

Worth being precise about one thing: 21-NA-124's subject line covers P0442 and P0455, not P0445. Its body does contain the phrase "For either DTC P0442 or P0445," which appears to be a typographical slip for P0455 given the rest of the document. We are not going to claim the bulletin covers your code on the strength of a probable typo — but the purge-valve behaviour, the connection list and the diagnostic order it publishes are directly applicable to any purge-side complaint, which is why they belong on this page.

The Oil Contamination Path — and Why the Valve Alone Is Not the Fix

There is a GM bulletin that explains why purge valves stick, and it carries an instruction most repairs skip.

17-NA-409 (December 2017, revised February 2018) covers 2014–2018 Chevrolet Impala with the 3.6L LFX engine, for P0442, P0455 and/or P0496. GM's stated cause: oil or contamination from the cam cover gasket, causing the purge valve to become stuck.

The correction is the important part. If the purge valve has been validated as the cause and replaced, GM states that a new cam cover gasket has been designed to reduce the amount of oil pull over at high engine speeds and must also be replaced.

Even if you do not own an Impala, the mechanism generalises and the lesson is worth taking: if oil is being pulled into the purge valve, a new purge valve will be contaminated the same way. When you have the old valve out, look inside it. Oil or carbon residue in there is telling you the valve was a victim, not the culprit, and that something upstream is putting oil where it should not be.

The same logic applies to charcoal canister breakdown. If the canister's media has begun to break up, debris migrates down the purge line and into the valve — and a replacement valve will jam on the same debris. Inspect the line and the canister before fitting a new part.

P0496 alongside P0445 is a strong combination. One says the circuit is shorted; the other says vapour is flowing when it should not be. Together they point firmly at a failed solenoid rather than at wiring alone.

That hard-start-after-fuelling symptom is worth flagging because owners rarely connect it to an emissions component. If the car is difficult to start only when you have just filled the tank, and easier after it has sat, the purge system is a very reasonable suspect.

How Is P0445 Diagnosed?

  1. Record every stored code. P0496 supports a stuck-open valve. P0442 or P0455 alongside tells you which failure mode per GM's rule. Lean codes suggest the valve is feeding the intake.
  2. Check the fuel cap is present and sealing. Free, and GM lists it among the critical connections.
  3. Work through GM's seven critical connections for proper seating, starting at the purge valve on the intake manifold.
  4. Inspect the EVAP lines along their length for damage, wear and chafing.
  5. Inspect the purge valve connector and harness for chafe, heat damage and corrosion — this is a circuit code, so the wiring deserves genuine attention.
  6. Measure solenoid resistance against specification. Near zero indicates the internal short the code describes.
  7. Cycle the purge and vent solenoids with a scan tool while inspecting, as GM suggests, to reveal a sticking valve.

This is one of the friendlier codes on the emissions side: the valve itself is among the cheaper parts on the engine, it usually sits in plain view on top of the intake, and GM's own bulletin says the most common resolution needs no parts at all.

Note that neither bulletin names P0445 in its subject line — these are the purge-valve documents GM publishes, and they describe the component and its failure modes rather than this specific circuit code. We would rather tell you that plainly than dress them up as something they are not.

What Other P0445 Pages Get Wrong

  • Treating it as identical to the vent valve codes. The purge valve is on the intake manifold and connects to a running engine; the vent valve is at the canister near the tank. A purge fault can cause rough idle and stalling. A vent fault usually cannot. Our P0449 guide covers the other side.
  • Getting stuck open and stuck closed backwards. GM states that a stuck open purge valve sets the small leak code and a stuck closed one sets the large leak code, because P0455 also covers purge blockage. Most pages assume the reverse.
  • Going straight to the valve. GM's published order puts the purge valve fourth, after line seating, line damage, and the vent valve — and the bulletin's parts section says no parts are required. Connections first.
  • Replacing the valve and nothing else when it is full of oil. GM's correction on the documented oil-contamination application requires the redesigned cam cover gasket as well. A clean new valve fitted into a dirty system fails the same way.
  • Smoke testing one way only. GM notes some leaks appear only under pressure and some only under vacuum. Testing one way and declaring the system sealed is a false negative waiting to happen.
  • Substituting the mounting hardware. GM specifies that the purge solenoid's isolator and mounting fastener must never be substituted.

Usually yes in the short term, and often you will not notice anything beyond the light.
