The most important thing to establish before buying anything for an Encore: the Encore and the Encore GX are different vehicles. They share a name and very little else. Getting that wrong is the source of most wasted purchases on this model.
Encore vs Encore GX
| Encore | Encore GX | |
|---|---|---|
| Years | 2013–2022 | 2020 onward |
| Platform | Gamma II — shared with Chevrolet Trax of the same era | A newer, larger platform |
| Engines | 1.4L turbo four | 1.2L and 1.3L turbo three-cylinder |
| Sold alongside each other? | Yes — 2020–2022, which is where the confusion comes from | |
They overlapped for three model years. If your car is a 2020, 2021 or 2022, check the badge on the tailgate before ordering any fitted part, because "2021 Buick Encore" alone does not identify your vehicle.
A correction worth stating plainly: no Buick Encore has ever had a 3.6L V6. An earlier version of this guide recommended an engine air filter described as fitting the "Buick Encore AWD 3.6L." That filter is an Acadia part, and the listing title is misleading. The Encore uses a 1.4L turbo four; the Encore GX uses a 1.2L or 1.3L turbo three. Buy an engine air filter against your actual engine, confirmed by VIN — not against a listing that names your model.
The Backup Camera Is the Genuinely Useful Part
A failed backup camera is otherwise a dealer-priced repair, and there is an OEM-matched replacement covering Encore 2013–2022, Chevrolet Trax 2013–2022, Equinox 2014–2015 and GMC Terrain 2014–2017. That cross-fitment is real: those vehicles share electronics architecture across those specific year ranges.
Note what the range does not include. It does not cover the Encore GX, and it does not cover Equinox or Terrain outside those narrow windows. Shared architecture holds for the years listed and no further.
Door Puddle Lights
Adhesive-mounted puddle lights are available for the 2013–2022 Encore. Because they stick on and carry their own power rather than tapping the door harness, they do not create the lamp-out warnings that badly installed lighting causes on other GM vehicles.
Confirm the listing names the Encore. Buick sells puddle lights across most of the lineup in generation-specific designs, and Regal, Enclave and Envision sets are not interchangeable with the Encore's.
Maintenance Items Worth Keeping On Hand
- Wiper blades — driver and passenger sides are frequently different lengths; confirm both for your year.
- Engine air filter — matched to your actual engine, per the correction above.
- Cabin air filter — confirm by VIN. Encore and Encore GX are different platforms and should not be assumed to share one.
What About Trax Parts?
For the 2013–2022 Encore specifically, the Trax connection is real — same Gamma II platform, same era, and the backup camera above is listed for both. But it holds for electronics and mechanical parts more reliably than for anything cut to the body or interior, where trim and dimensions differ.
For the Encore GX, do not assume Trax compatibility at all; it is a different, newer platform. Our GM parts interchange guide covers why a shared platform produces a shortlist to check rather than an answer.
What to Buy First
- Confirm Encore or Encore GX, and your model year. Nothing else matters until this is settled.
- Wipers, if they streak or chatter.
- Cabin and engine air filters, confirmed by VIN against your actual engine.
- Backup camera, only if yours has failed and only if your year falls in the listed range.
- Puddle lights, if you want them, on a 2013–2022 Encore.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Buick Encore and Encore GX the same vehicle?
No. The Encore ran 2013–2022 on the Gamma II platform with a 1.4L turbo four; the Encore GX arrived in 2020 on a newer, larger platform with 1.2L and 1.3L turbo three-cylinders. They overlapped for 2020–2022, which is where most confusion comes from.
Does the Buick Encore have a 3.6L engine?
No. No Encore has ever had a 3.6L V6 — that is an Acadia engine. The Encore uses a 1.4L turbo four and the Encore GX a 1.2L or 1.3L turbo three. Air filter listings naming a 3.6L Encore are mislabelled.
Which vehicles does the replacement backup camera fit?
Encore 2013–2022, Chevrolet Trax 2013–2022, Equinox 2014–2015 and GMC Terrain 2014–2017. That shared architecture holds for those year ranges only — it does not extend to the Encore GX or to Equinox and Terrain outside those windows.
Will Chevrolet Trax accessories fit my Encore?
For the 2013–2022 Encore, often — same platform and era, particularly for electronics and mechanical parts. Less reliably for anything cut to the body or interior. For the Encore GX, do not assume compatibility at all.
Will puddle lights from another Buick fit the Encore?
No. Buick sells them in generation-specific designs across the lineup, and Regal, Enclave and Envision sets are not interchangeable with the Encore's. Confirm the listing names the Encore.
Will stick-on puddle lights cause an electrical fault?
No. They adhere and carry their own power rather than tapping the door harness, so they do not create the lamp-out warnings that poorly installed lighting causes elsewhere on GM vehicles.
Which cabin air filter does the Encore take?
Confirm by VIN. The Encore and Encore GX are different platforms and should not be assumed to share a filter.
I have a 2021 Encore. Which parts do I order?
Check the tailgate badge first. Buick sold both the Encore and the Encore GX in 2021, so the model year alone does not identify your vehicle.
A Note on Sourcing
This guide consolidates two earlier Encore pages that recommended largely the same products.
The 3.6L air filter recommendation was an error and is corrected above rather than removed silently. No Encore has used that engine; the filter is an Acadia part carrying a misleading listing title. Both earlier pages repeated it, and both hedged with "confirm your engine" — a hedge that cannot help when the engine named does not exist in the vehicle.
Two orphaned product cards were removed from this page, one of which advertised Buick Regal puddle lights on an Encore guide.
Encore and Encore GX platform and engine details are given because the two are routinely conflated, including in product listings. The backup camera's cross-fitment range is taken from the manufacturer's own listing.
