What C056D Means
GM's descriptor is "Electronic Control Unit Hardware." A module ran an internal self-check and something failed. GM's generic chart is explicit about what that does and does not tell you:
"The internal fault detection is handled inside the control module. The symptom byte listed in the DTC Descriptor is for engineering reference only. No external circuit diagnosis is involved."
The critical thing to understand is that C056D is module-agnostic. It is not a brake code. GM documents it being set by the electronic brake control module, the power steering control module, the multi-axis yaw rate sensor, the suspension control module and the rear differential clutch control module. Which module reported it is the entire diagnosis, and a page that treats C056D as an ABS code will send you the wrong way.
Which Module Set It
This is the first question, not a detail. GM's own worked example shows why: on a Terrain, the multi-axis sensor sets C056D symptom 39 on the chassis bus, while the brake module simultaneously shows C0196 symptom 71 on the high-speed network. Two modules, two codes, one faulty sensor — and the brake module is the innocent party.
GM also publishes the order in which codes should be diagnosed, and C056D sits high in it:
"Diagnose any current DTCs in the following order: DTCs that begin with a U. Any of the following: B1000, B1001, B1008, B1011, B1019, C0550, C0569, C056D, C056E, P0601… Component level DTCs. System level DTCs. Any remaining DTCs."

Note 3A, "Incorrect Component Installed." That one is worth knowing before you buy anything — it means a part that physically fits is not the part the vehicle expects.
One correction: at least one widely-used site defines C056D as "Brake Pedal Position Sensor Supply Voltage Circuit Low" and publishes a 32-row table of sub-types running -00 to -1F with descriptions like "short to battery voltage." None of that matches GM's list above, and the definition would send a technician to the brake pedal position sensor for a fault that is internal to a module. It is auto-generated boilerplate.
History vs Current — the Decision That Saves the Module
GM's diagnostic aid, verbatim, is the most valuable sentence on this page:
"This DTC may be stored as a history DTC without affecting the operation of the module. If stored only as a history DTC and not retrieved as a current DTC, do not replace the module. If this DTC is retrieved as both a current and history DTC, replace the module that set the DTC."
And before replacement even then: "If the DTC is set in a control module that can be programmed, program the control module. If the DTC resets, replace the control module." Reprogram first.
History codes clear after 50 malfunction-free ignition cycles. A history-only C056D on a vehicle that drives normally is not evidence that anything needs replacing.

How C056D Is Diagnosed
A generic OBD-II reader cannot do any of this. The tool must read every module — including the AWD clutch module, the multi-axis sensor, the power steering module and the suspension module, not just ABS — show current versus history status, reach GM enhanced data, run configuration and relearn functions, and perform SPS programming through a hard-wired diagnostic interface.

- Read all modules and identify which one set C056D, recording the symptom byte.
- Determine current versus history. History-only means stop — do not replace the module.
- Check for U-codes first; the diagnostic order puts them ahead of this group.

- Only if it returns as current after programming, replace the module or sensor that set it.
Two practical notes from GM. A programming error E6961 on a brake module indicates high park brake actuator or circuit resistance — power the module down for over five minutes before retrying. And use a hard-wired diagnostic interface for yaw sensor configuration; GM warns that a wireless one can itself provoke additional codes or unwanted stability activation.

What Other C056D Pages Get Wrong
- Defining it as a brake pedal position sensor fault. That definition is published on at least one major site and is simply not GM's. C056D is an internal module fault, and GM states no external circuit diagnosis is involved.
- Treating it as an ABS code. GM documents five different modules that set it. On the Terrain years where it is most searched, GM's bulletin explicitly says not to replace the brake module.
- Ignoring the history-versus-current test. This is the single decision that determines whether a module gets replaced, and GM states it plainly. Most pages skip it.
