Service StabiliTrak Light On? Here's What It Means & What To Do

Few dashboard warnings cause more confusion for GM and Chevrolet owners than the "Service StabiliTrak" message. It appears suddenly, often alongside the traction control light, and leaves drivers wondering: Is my car safe to drive? Is this expensive to fix? Can I clear it myself?

This guide covers what StabiliTrak actually is, the most common causes, what the codes mean, what it costs to fix, and whether you can keep driving.

  • C0041 was listed as a wheel speed sensor code. It is not one. The four wheel speed sensor codes are C0035, C0040, C0045 and C0050.
  • C0050 — right rear — was missing entirely, which left a quarter of the wheels off a diagnostics page.
  • The biggest omission was the cause. GM's own diagnostic aid identifies metallic debris on the magnetic encoder ring as a frequent trigger for these codes and this exact message. The sensor is often fine. That is now covered below, because it is the difference between cleaning a hub and buying parts you do not need.

What Is StabiliTrak?

StabiliTrak is GM's Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. Electronic stability control has been required on all light vehicles sold in the US since the 2012 model year, and StabiliTrak is GM's implementation. It monitors:

  • Steering wheel position — where you intend to go
  • Vehicle yaw rate — how the vehicle is actually rotating
  • Individual wheel speeds, from the same sensors the ABS uses
  • Throttle position and brake pressure

When it detects the vehicle sliding, oversteering or understeering, it reduces engine power and brakes individual wheels to bring the vehicle back in line with your steering input.

When "Service StabiliTrak" appears, the system has detected a fault and disabled itself. Your brakes still work normally, but you have lost stability control, and usually ABS and traction control alongside it, since they share the same sensors.


Service StabiliTrak vs. Traction Control Light

These appear together often, because the systems share components.

  • Traction control light flashing: normal. The system is actively working to limit wheel spin. No action needed.
  • Traction control light solid: the system is switched off, or there is a fault.
  • "Service StabiliTrak": a fault has been detected and the system has disabled itself.
  • "StabiliTrak Off": the system has been switched off, by you or by the vehicle.

The Cause Most People Miss: Debris on the Encoder Ring

This is the single most useful thing on this page, and it is GM's own finding.

Modern GM vehicles do not use a traditional toothed tone wheel. They use an encoder ring made of magnetised material — often a brown nitrile rubber ring — with permanent magnets moulded into it. The wheel speed sensor reads the alternating magnetic field as the wheel turns and sends a square-wave signal to the electronic brake control module.

Because that ring is magnetic, it attracts ferrous metallic debris — brake dust, road grit, filings from a recent brake job. A single piece of metal stuck to the ring distorts the signal, the module sees an implausible wheel speed, and you get a Service StabiliTrak message.

GM's diagnostic aid for this condition (PIC5428, revised repeatedly) tells technicians to inspect the encoder ring at the corresponding corner for debris before condemning anything. The corner is identified by the code:

  • C0035 — left front
  • C0040 — right front
  • C0045 — left rear
  • C0050 — right rear (some platforms use C0055 for the right rear instead — GM's own bulletins vary, so check both)

The symptom byte matters as much as the code. If your scan tool reports the code with a suffix of 18 (low signal amplitude), 5A (signal not plausible) or 0F (erratic signal), that points toward debris or a damaged encoder ring rather than a dead sensor. A sensor that has genuinely failed internally usually sets a hard, permanent code that does not come and go.

Why this matters financially: on many GM vehicles the wheel speed sensor and the encoder ring are part of the wheel hub assembly, so "replace the sensor" becomes a $150–$300 hub per corner. If the actual problem is a bit of metal stuck to a magnet, cleaning it costs nothing.


Most Common Causes of the Service StabiliTrak Light

1. Wheel Speed Sensor or Encoder Ring (Most Common)

Covered above. Debris on the encoder ring first, then the sensor itself, then wiring. The sensor harness runs from the hub up into the wheel well, where it is exposed to salt and road damage — GM has published bulletins on harness routing and chafing as a cause.

2. Steering Angle Sensor Out of Calibration

This sensor tells the system where you are pointing the wheels. It commonly loses calibration after an alignment, a battery disconnection or steering work. The fix is frequently a recalibration with a scan tool — no parts at all. Worth asking about before authorising anything expensive.

3. Low Brake Fluid or a Brake System Fault

StabiliTrak applies individual brakes through the ABS hydraulics. Low fluid or a fault elsewhere in the brake system can take it offline. Checking the reservoir is free.

4. Electrical Supply Problems

A loose or corroded battery terminal, a weak battery, or a failing alternator can produce voltage the modules read as a fault. Check battery terminals first — it costs nothing and it is a genuinely common cause.

5. Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) Fault

Less common, more expensive. Module replacement typically requires programming to the vehicle.

6. Throttle or Powertrain Faults

Because StabiliTrak intervenes by cutting engine power, some powertrain faults will disable it as a consequence. If "Service StabiliTrak" arrives alongside "Engine Power Reduced," the powertrain fault is usually the cause and the StabiliTrak message is the symptom.

7. Software

On newer vehicles a module calibration update can resolve a persistent message. This is dealer work.


Is It Safe to Drive With the Service StabiliTrak Light On?

Your base brakes work normally and the vehicle drives. But you have lost stability control, and usually ABS and traction control too.

  • Short trip in dry conditions: acceptable
  • Rain, snow or ice: drive slower, leave far more following distance — the system that would have caught a slide is off
  • Long highway trips or severe weather: get it diagnosed first

One symptom to take seriously: if you also get unexpected ABS activation at low speed, or a grinding or clicking from a wheel while braking gently, stop driving it. That combination often accompanies a wheel speed signal fault and can feel like the brakes acting on their own.


Can You Reset the Service StabiliTrak Light Yourself?

  1. Turn the vehicle off, wait, restart. This clears faults that were transient.
  2. Check battery terminals — clean and tight.
  3. Check brake fluid level.
  4. Scan for codes. Note that many basic OBD-II readers only show P-codes. StabiliTrak faults are chassis codes beginning with C, and a scanner that cannot read them will show "no codes" on a vehicle that clearly has one.

Do not simply clear the code and carry on. Clearing it removes the evidence a technician would use, and if the cause is a wheel speed signal, it will return.

GM Models Commonly Affected

Any GM vehicle can set a StabiliTrak fault, but the encoder-ring debris condition has been documented across a wide range of GM crossovers and trucks, including Acadia, Enclave, Traverse and Outlook of the 2007–2014 era, and it continues on later platforms. Full-size trucks and SUVs — Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon — see wheel speed sensor and harness faults frequently simply because of exposure to salt and road debris.

What does "Service StabiliTrak" actually mean?

It means GM's electronic stability control system has detected a fault and switched itself off. Your normal brakes and steering are unaffected, but you have lost stability control, and usually ABS and traction control with it, because they share the same wheel speed sensors.

What are the wheel speed sensor codes?

This matters because on many GM vehicles the sensor is part of the hub assembly, so replacing it means buying a whole hub.

Is it safe to drive with the Service StabiliTrak light on?

For a short trip in dry conditions, yes. Base brakes and steering work normally. But you have lost the system that catches a slide, so avoid rain, snow and ice, and get it diagnosed before long trips. If you also get unexpected ABS activation at low speed or a grinding noise while braking gently, stop driving and have it looked at.

Can a wheel alignment cause a Service StabiliTrak message?

Yes, indirectly. The steering angle sensor can lose its calibration after an alignment, a battery disconnection or steering work. The remedy is a recalibration with a scan tool rather than any replacement part, which makes it one of the cheapest outcomes — worth asking about before agreeing to parts.

Will disconnecting the battery clear it?

It may clear the message temporarily, but if the underlying fault is still present it will return, and you will have erased the stored code a technician needed. A battery disconnection can also knock the steering angle sensor out of calibration, creating a second fault. Scan and record the codes before clearing anything.

Does the check engine light come on too?

Not necessarily. StabiliTrak faults are chassis codes and often illuminate only the StabiliTrak and traction control warnings. If you do get "Engine Power Reduced" alongside it, the powertrain fault is usually the root cause and the StabiliTrak message is a consequence, since the system relies on engine torque control to intervene.


A Note on Sourcing

GM's engineering information bulletin on inoperative wheel speed sensors, published by NHTSA as a manufacturer communication, lists the codes as C0035 left front, C0040 right front, C0045 left rear and C0055 right rear — which is why we note that the right rear code varies by platform. We read that document directly.

The encoder-ring debris guidance, the symptom bytes 18, 5A and 0F, and the instruction to inspect the ring at the corner matching the code correspond to GM's diagnostic aid PIC5428 and its revisions. We have not read that bulletin directly — it is corroborated across independent technical sources describing its contents.

Two corrections were made in this revision: C0041 was removed, as it is not one of the wheel speed sensor codes, and C0050 was added, having been omitted.

Diagnostics vary by platform and model year. A scan tool that reads chassis codes on your specific vehicle, and GM service information for that vehicle, are authoritative in a way that a general guide cannot be.
