What Does P1011 Mean on a Chevy Malibu?
To understand this code you need to know one piece of hardware most VVT explanations skip: the locking pin.
The camshaft position actuator has an outer housing driven by the timing chain, and inside it a vaned wheel attached to the camshaft. Oil pressure moves the vanes relative to the housing, which is how the ECM changes valve timing. But at start-up there is no oil pressure yet — so the actuator would be free to flop around against the chain.
GM's solution is a locking pin that holds the actuator in its park position. The pin prevents movement between the outer housing and the vane assembly during start-up, and it stays locked until sufficient oil pressure is available to control the actuator properly. Only then does oil pressure release the pin, before any movement takes place.
P1011 sets when the ECM determines the actuator is not in that locked park position at start-up.
That single sentence reframes the whole diagnosis. This is not the ECM complaining that your camshaft drifted a few degrees while cruising. It is the ECM finding the actuator unlocked or out of position at the moment of starting — which points at the pin, at the actuator, or at the oil pressure that governs both.
P1011 vs P0011 vs P0010 — Three Different Questions
These get treated as interchangeable constantly, and they are not. A scan tool showing P1011 is telling you something quite specific.

GM uses companion codes in the same P101x range for the exhaust camshaft, and on V-configuration engines for bank 2. Bank 1 is the side containing cylinder number one; on the four-cylinder Malibu engines that is the only bank.
Why this distinction saves money: a page that treats P1011 as "just another VVT code" will send you to buy a solenoid. That may well be right — but the park position failure can also mean the actuator's locking pin itself is worn or stuck, which is a different part, and it can mean oil pressure is not adequate at start-up, which is not a part at all.
Why Oil Is the Whole Story Here
On most VVT codes, oil condition is the first thing to check. On P1011 it is arguably more central than on any of them, because the locking pin is released by oil pressure and the actuator is held in park until oil pressure is sufficient. Oil is not a contributing factor to this mechanism. It is the mechanism.
Four things to establish, in order, all cheap:
- Level. Low oil means low pressure at start-up, which is precisely when this code is evaluated.
- Condition. Sludge and varnish restrict the small passages and the solenoid screen that feed the actuator. Dark, thin, or overdue oil is a finding.
- Viscosity. These systems are designed around a specific grade. Oil that is too thick behaves badly cold, which is exactly the condition under which this code sets.
- Consumption rate. If the level keeps dropping, the pressure problem will keep returning no matter what part you fit.

GM Special Coverage 15824 — Worth Checking Your VIN
This is the most valuable thing on the page for the right owner, and it is a real, documented program rather than a rumour.
GM released Special Coverage 15824 (reference number N151702710) in June 2016, covering 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and 2013 Cadillac ATS with the 2.0L turbo or 2.5L engine, RPO LTG or LCV. Roughly 211,600 U.S. vehicles were involved.
GM's stated condition: a wire within the intake or exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoid may break internally, illuminating the MIL and setting a diagnostic trouble code. The correction is to replace the affected solenoid valve at no charge.

Two honest caveats, because they matter.
First, the codes GM names in 15824 are P0010 and P0013 — the intake and exhaust solenoid circuit codes — not P1011. If you have P1011 alone, this program does not name your code. It is still worth raising with a dealer, because it is the same solenoid on the same engines and it costs nothing to have your VIN checked in GM's system, but we are not going to tell you it covers P1011 when the bulletin says otherwise.
Second, the coverage clock has now run out for most vehicles. Ten years from a 2013 in-service date lands in 2023. The customer reimbursement deadline was 30 June 2017. So unless a particular vehicle was placed in service unusually late, this has expired on the calendar — which does not stop it being useful to know when you are checking service history, buying used, or trying to understand why this part fails.
Involvement is always confirmed by VIN in GM's warranty system, never by a model-year table on a website. Ask.
The Other Malibu Coverage Worth Knowing
There is a second, later special coverage on a related oil-control component. N192289160 (June 2020) covers 2014 Chevrolet Malibu and Impala with the 2.5L engine, RPO LKW, for a condition where the rocker arm oil control valve may malfunction and fail to correctly control oil.
That is a different valve from the camshaft actuator solenoid, and a different program. We are including it because it sits in the same oil-control territory on the same engine family, and because anyone diagnosing an oil-pressure-dependent cam fault on a 2.5L Malibu should know it exists.
We could not open N192289160 in full and are reporting its scope from GM's bulletin header rather than the complete document. Treat the details as indicative and check your VIN.
A separate reported bulletin on the 2014 2.5L notes that when the camshaft cover is replaced for a related concern, the VVT solenoids must be replaced at the same time — worth raising if a camshaft cover job is quoted.

How Is P1011 Diagnosed?
- Check your VIN against GM's system for Special Coverage 15824 and any later program. Free, and the answer can change everything.
- Check the oil level and condition. On this code that is not a formality — the locking pin depends on oil pressure.
- Record every stored code. P0010 or P0013 alongside points at the solenoid circuit. P0016 points at the chain instead.
- Note when it happens. Cold start only is consistent with the park position mechanism; all-conditions roughness suggests looking wider.
- Remove the intake solenoid and inspect it — the screen for sludge and debris, the sealing lands, and the connector cavity for oil.
- Measure solenoid resistance and wiggle-test the connector while watching for a wandering reading.

Note how short GM's own labor times are for the solenoids: two tenths of an hour on the four-cylinder. The cost of this repair is overwhelmingly diagnosis and parts, not labour, which is another argument for doing the free tests first.

What Other P1011 Pages Get Wrong
- Treating P1011 as a typo for P0011. They are different codes with different mechanisms. P0011 is a running performance code about where the camshaft ended up. P1011 is evaluated at start-up and concerns whether the actuator is locked in its park position. Diagnosing one as the other wastes time.
- Never mentioning the locking pin. The pin is the entire subject of this code — held in park until oil pressure releases it. Without that, "check the solenoid" is a guess rather than a reasoned step.
- Not telling Malibu owners to check their VIN. GM ran a 10 year / 120,000 mile special coverage on these exact solenoids across roughly 211,600 vehicles. Even where it has now expired, knowing it existed explains the failure and informs a used-car inspection.
- Overstating that coverage. 15824 names P0010 and P0013, not P1011, and the term has run out for most 2013 vehicles. We would rather tell you that than have you make a phone call built on a false expectation.
- Treating oil as a footnote. On this code oil pressure is the mechanism that releases the pin. Level, condition and viscosity are not preliminary housekeeping — they are the diagnosis.
- Ignoring that the solenoids are keyed differently. They can be swapped briefly as a diagnostic, but they carry different part numbers and are not interchangeable as a permanent fit.
