If you own a GM or Chevrolet truck or SUV with a 5.3L or 6.2L V8, you've probably heard of the lifter problem. It's one of the most talked-about issues in the GM truck community — and for good reason. Lifter failures related to GM's Active Fuel Management (AFM) and Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) systems have cost owners thousands of dollars and shaken confidence in the brand.

GM Authority traced the claim to an AI-generated YouTube channel producing false content, from which it spread to aggregator sites and vendor blogs. Its position is unambiguous: DFM still equips GM's Gen 5 V8 engines and no change was made for the 2026 model year. Owners checking 2026 V8 listings report finding "D" or "L" in the 8th VIN digit, not "E".

There was a genuine DFM-delete period, and it was not 2026 — see below. We published the false version, and the correction stays on the page rather than being edited away.


What Is AFM and DFM?

Active Fuel Management (AFM) shuts down half of an engine's cylinders during light-load cruising to improve fuel economy, by collapsing specialised hydraulic lifters and cutting fuel and spark to those cylinders.

GM's service bulletin 20-NA-038 names exactly which cylinders shut down, and the answer varies by engine:

  • Most V8 engines: cylinders 1, 7, 6 and 4
  • LTA and LT2 engines (Cadillac CT6 6.2L, C8 Corvette 6.2L): cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8
  • V6 engines: only 2 cylinders — 3 and 6

GM also notes that the engine always runs in full V8 mode during starting, idling, and medium to heavy throttle. Cylinder deactivation only happens under light cruise.

Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) — introduced with the 2019 Silverado 1500 on the L84 (5.3L) and L87 (6.2L) engines — took the concept further. Rather than switching between V8 and V4, DFM can deactivate anywhere from one to seven cylinders across 17 different firing patterns, controlling each lifter individually. That means all 16 deactivating lifters cycle constantly rather than just four, which is the crux of the durability argument against it.

GM's bulletin also notes that the lifter oil manifold assembly (LOMA) is used only on legacy AFM applications — a useful distinction when reading repair estimates, since DFM engines control lifters differently.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

  • AFM (roughly 2007–2018): Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade with 5.3L (LC9, LMF, LY5, L83) and 6.0L/6.2L engines
  • DFM (2019–present): Silverado and Sierra from 2019, Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon from 2021, with L84 (5.3L) and L87 (6.2L)
  • 4.3L V6 AFM: the 4.3L V6 uses the same collapsible lifter principle, deactivating cylinders 3 and 6

The Real DFM Delete: RPO YK9, 2021–2022

There was a period when GM built these trucks without DFM — it just was not 2026, and it was not a reliability decision.

Between March 2021 and the end of the 2022 model year, GM removed DFM and auto stop-start from select 5.3L L84 trucks and SUVs, a consequence of the semiconductor shortage rather than an engineering change of heart. Those vehicles were tagged with RPO code YK9, indicating the absence of DFM. The code appears on the Monroney window sticker and in GM's warranty system against the VIN.

DFM returned for the 2023 model year.

So if you are shopping used and want a factory truck without DFM, the window is a 2021 or 2022 5.3L L84 carrying RPO YK9 — check the window sticker or have a dealer look up the VIN. That is a real, documented configuration, unlike the 2026 "E" digit.

The YK9 detail comes from GM Authority's reporting rather than a GM document we have read directly, so verify against the specific vehicle's RPO list before buying on the strength of it.


Why Do AFM/DFM Lifters Fail?

The AFM/DFM lifters use internal locking pins controlled by oil pressure. When the control module commands cylinder deactivation, oil pressure collapses the lifter — it physically shrinks so it can't actuate the valves. When it commands reactivation, oil pressure extends the lifter again.

The problem: the locking pins and internal springs inside these lifters are prone to fatigue. Over repeated collapse and extend cycles — especially under load or with marginal oil pressure — the pins wear, the springs weaken, and eventually a lifter sticks in the collapsed position. That valve never opens, the cylinder goes dead, and you get a misfire.

Making matters worse: when a lifter fails, debris can damage the camshaft lobe above it — turning a lifter replacement into a full cam-and-lifter job.

What Accelerates Failure?

Our assessment from field experience, not GM's published position:

  • Towing or hauling near capacity, causing rapid cycling under heat and load
  • City driving with frequent stops — constant activation and deactivation
  • Infrequent oil changes or non-dexos certified oil
  • Oil consumption left unaddressed, since low oil level means low oil pressure
  • DFM cycling 16 lifters rather than AFM's four — more cycles, spread across every cylinder

AFM/DFM Lifter Failure Symptoms — Catch It Early

1. Engine Tick or Tapping Noise (Earliest Warning)

A metallic tapping sound that speeds up with RPM — especially at idle or on cold starts — is the classic first sign. Don't ignore this. At this stage the camshaft is often still undamaged and the repair is far cheaper.

2. Misfire / Rough Running

When a lifter fully collapses and stays there, the cylinder goes dead. You'll feel rough idle, stumble under acceleration, loss of power. The check engine light typically sets misfire codes P0300–P0308 alongside AFM-specific codes such as P3400, P3425, P3449 and P3497.

3. Cylinder Deactivation Codes

Codes beginning P34xx are AFM/DFM-specific. If you're pulling those from a scanner, the cylinder deactivation system is where to look.

4. Excessive Oil Consumption

These engines are known to consume more oil as they age. If your 5.3L is burning more than a quart every 3,000 miles, the valve train is a likely contributor. Low oil level leads to low oil pressure, which accelerates lifter wear — a self-reinforcing loop.

5. Rough Transition Between Modes

A shudder, vibration or surge as the system activates or deactivates — often around 45–55 mph — suggests it is struggling. Healthy transitions should be imperceptible.

Your Options If You Have an AFM/DFM Engine

Option 1: OBD-II Disabler (Best for Prevention)

Plug-in modules signal the control module never to activate cylinder deactivation, so the engine runs in full V8 mode all the time. No tune, no permanent modification.

Cost: $90–$260 | Installation: plug-in, about 30 seconds

Important: remove before dealership service visits. This is prevention — it will not fix lifters that have already failed.

Compatibility note: the original OBD-port disablers do not work on 2022.5 and newer trucks with the updated control module. Range Technology now lists a disabler covering 2022.5–2026 Silverado and Sierra 5.3L/6.2L and 2021–2024 Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon — confirm the exact fitment for your year before ordering.

Option 2: PCM Tune (Disables It in Software)

A custom calibration can permanently disable AFM/DFM in the truck's computer. More permanent than a plug-in and works on newer trucks that plug-in devices don't support.

Cost: $300–$600 for a tune

Worth knowing: a software disable stops the lifters cycling, but the AFM/DFM lifters are still in the engine. It prevents further cycling wear; it does not replace hardware that has already worn.

Option 3: Full Mechanical Delete (Permanent Engine Fix)

Replace all AFM/DFM lifters with standard non-collapsible lifters, fit a non-AFM camshaft, replace the valley plate, and tune to match. This eliminates the failure mode at its source.

Cost: $1,500–$3,500 depending on parts and shop

Best for: trucks with early-stage ticking that haven't yet damaged the camshaft, or as a proactive job on a high-mileage truck

Option 4: Monitor and Maintain

If your truck has no symptoms and sees light use, some owners choose to monitor carefully — keep up with oil changes, use dexos-certified synthetic, check the level monthly. Plenty of GM trucks have passed 150,000 miles without lifter trouble. It is a judgement call rather than a fix.
