GMC Code U1510 Across Models: What Changes by Vehicle

U1510 means the same thing on every GM vehicle: a master control module lost communication with a smart device on a LIN bus. What changes from model to model is which module is the master and which device went quiet — and that determines the repair. A documented U1510 fix for a Camaro is a software reprogram. On a Malibu it is a wiring harness. On a 2017 Sierra it can be a ground bolt.

What Stays the Same on Every Vehicle?

The architecture. GM's LIN Bus Diagnostic Information document — PIT5698, revised through PIT5698D and covering 2013–2024 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC — describes a Local Interconnect Network as a single wire linking one master control module to one or more smart devices such as switches, sensors and small motors. When communication is lost between the master and a device, the master sets a no-communication code against that device.

Three things follow from that and hold true regardless of what you drive:

  • The scan tool never talks to the failed device. GM states that LIN buses are not wired to the DLC. Your tool communicates with the master controller, which relays to the device. The device itself is invisible to a network scan.
  • Battery voltage is a prerequisite, not a footnote. The LIN bus swings between roughly 1 and 12 volts, a far wider range than other GMLAN buses. GM directs technicians to install a GR8 or equivalent battery tender before testing or expect false readings.
  • Reference voltage is the test. Every device on the bus, master and slave, outputs its own reference voltage about one volt below system voltage and toggles it low to communicate. Testing that voltage from both directions is how you isolate the fault.

That is the constant. Everything below is the variable.

What Actually Changes From Model to Model?

Two things, and they matter more than the badge on the tailgate.

The master module changes. On a truck with active grille shutters the master for that bus is the ECM. On a climate control fault it is often the radio or the HVAC control module. On body devices it is the BCM. Different master means a completely different wiring diagram and a different place to start probing.

The device population changes with options, not just models. Two Sierras of the same year with different trim can have different devices hanging off the same bus. A vehicle without active grille shutters cannot set a shutter-related U1510 at all.

This is why copying a fix from a forum thread about a different model is a coin flip. The code number matched; nothing else necessarily did.

Full-Size Trucks and SUVs: Grounds First

On Sierra, Silverado, Yukon and the related full-size platforms, the highest-value documented U1510 causes are not devices at all. They are power and ground.

GM PIT5405, published May 2015 and revised as PIT5405A and PIT5405C through January 2017, covers 2014–2017 full-size trucks and SUVs. Its symptom list reads like a different problem entirely: steering jerks or kicks back, reduced power steering assist, engine stall, no start, Service StabiliTrak, and IPC, radio or HVAC going blank. U1510 sits in its DTC list alongside U0073, U0078, U0029, U0028, U0415, U0140, U0126, U0121, U0101, U0100, C0544, C0710, B127B, B2605, B3600, C0800, U0428, U0452, U0131 and P0513.

The cause is a poor BCM ground at G218, with the front-of-dash insulator mat trapped between the ground eyelet and the body stud. The fix is to remove the ground nut and eyelet and cut the mat back so the eyelet seats metal to metal. The later revisions add two more causes to the same symptom set: a shorted B+ battery cable at the starter solenoid, and high resistance or a loose connection at the battery fuse block or battery cables.

GM PIT5562, published April 2017, adds a separate ground issue for 2017 Silverado and Sierra: ground bolts that were not hardened to specification. Its condition list covers stalling, crank-no-start, lighting faults, and inoperative memory seats, power seats and power windows. U1510 appears in that bulletin alongside U1524, U1534, U1538, U1548, U1833, U0155, U0159, U0164, U0184, U0186, U0198, U0208, U026A, U0422, P0562, C1113 and C111B.

If your truck has U1510 and unrelated electrical complaints, these two documents are the cheapest things on the list to rule out.

Active Shutter Platforms: Two Different Bulletins, Two Different Parts

Active grille shutters run on a LIN bus with the ECM as master, so they are a common U1510 source. But the two GM bulletins that cover shutter faults point at different parts, and getting them mixed up is expensive.

GM 16-NA-051 covers 2016–2019 Chevrolet Malibu (VIN Z) and 2017–2019 Buick LaCrosse with RPOs VRI and WMI. Its January 2020 revision lists P05AE, P059F, P151F, P0071, P0072, P0073, P0074, P3056, U1345, U1501, U1510, U1511 and U0285. The cause is moisture intrusion past damaged or missing seals in the B9, M60B and X119 connectors for the ambient air temperature sensor wiring harness — or simply snow and ice packed in the front lower grille.

The correction is routed by which connector shows corrosion, and it is not a shutter job by default. Water or corrosion at the ambient air temperature sensor harness means replacing that harness. At X119, replace the main body wiring harness connector. At B9, replace the ambient air temperature sensor. Only corrosion found at M60B calls for replacing the active shutter. GM lists the ambient air temp sensor harness as part 23258243 and a wiring harness connector kit as 13504371.

GM 17-NA-102 covers 2016–2017 Cadillac ATS and CTS with RPO XFE, for DTCs P059F, U1501, U1510 and U1511. Here the causes are snow or ice buildup in the front lower grille, or a loose connection or high resistance in the front fascia harness. The bulletin carries an explicit warning not to replace that harness until inspection, diagnosis and testing of the shutters is complete, and it splits the labor accordingly — 0.3 hour to validate shutter operation, 1.7 hours to test and replace the harness.

Both bulletins say the same thing in different words: verify the shutters move freely before you buy anything.

Camaro: A Software Fix, Not a Parts Fix

GM PIC5965, released February 2014 and revised as PIC5965A, PIC5965B and PIC5965C, covers 2014–2015 Chevrolet Camaro built before February 10, 2015. The complaint is that at start-up the blower motor and indicators are inoperative, or the blower runs but speed cannot be adjusted.

U1510 is set in the ECC — Electronic Climate Control — module, commonly called the HVAC module. The correction is to reprogram the ECC module with an updated software calibration. No parts. Labor operation 2810015, HVAC System Control Module Reprogramming with SPS.

This is the single case that produced the internet's most-repeated U1510 definition, and it is worth being precise about: this is a real GM-documented condition on a specific platform with a specific build cutoff. It is not the meaning of the code.

Cruze: One Connector, Four Dead Modules

GM PIC6206, revised through PIC6206C in May 2019, covers 2016 Chevrolet Cruze (VIN B) and 2017–2019 Cruze. Customers report air conditioning inoperative, radio will not turn on, instrument cluster inoperative, OnStar inoperative, and assorted other electrical concerns.

A GDS2 scan may show U1510 along with U0155 and U0184, plus no communication with the A11 Radio, P16 Instrument Cluster, K33 HVAC Control Module and K73 Telematics Communication Interface Control Module. A technician may also find that fuses F35DA, F36DA or F37DA in the X51A instrument panel fuse block are not powered.

The instruction is to inspect connector X201 for proper alignment and to confirm the locking lever is fully engaged. That is the entire repair — a connector that was never fully seated at the factory or during a prior service.

Bolt EV: Steering Wheel Controls and an IPC Reflash

GM 17-NA-169, dated May 2017, covers the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV and Opel Ampera-e. The complaint is inoperative steering wheel controls and a malfunction indicator lamp, with U1510 set or stored. GM attributes it to a software anomaly and directs technicians to reprogram the instrument panel cluster with the latest calibrations. No parts are needed.

The bulletin adds a programming caution worth repeating: stable battery voltage is critical, any spike or loss interrupts programming, install the EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool, and do not connect a battery charger.

Police Tahoe: The Shutters Were Deleted

This is the case that most rewards reading a bulletin before spending money. GM PIT6052, published August 2023, documents that during 2019 Police Tahoe production (RPO 9C1) there was a mid-year change to remove the active grille air shutters entirely to improve cooling performance. Vehicles built after that change, and all 2020 production, have no factory shutters, and the ECM calibrations were revised to turn off shutter DTCs and diagnostics.

The bulletin lists common shutter-related complaints including a check engine light with P059F, P151E, U1510 and U0284, poor A/C performance from shutters stuck closed, engine and transmission overheating, inability to command the shutters with GDS2, shutters broken in an accident, and shutters no longer available as service parts.

For early-built 2019 units still carrying working shutters, the correction is to remove the front bumper fascia, remove only the shutter louvers — not the frame assembly — by bowing each louver slightly to release it from the frame, discard them, reassemble, and recalibrate the ECM to disable shutter diagnostics. GM also notes that if the ECM was already reprogrammed with current calibrations, the shutters are already disabled and GDS2 shutter functions will no longer work.

Stop/Start Platforms

GM 15-NA-087 covers Stop/Start system (RPO KL9) inhibited with the malfunction indicator light on across Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC. Its code list includes P16DC, P15FF, U01B0, U0284, U0285, U1345, U135A, U135E, U1501, U1510 and U1511.

Blazer: A Pinched Harness Behind the Dash

GM PIT5693, published June 2019, covers the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer for Service Air Bag, Park Brake and StabiliTrak warnings caused by pinched instrument panel harnesses. Its code list includes U1510 alongside U0077, U0131, U0151, U0232, U0415, U0422 and U2415.

Mechanical damage to a harness during assembly produces exactly the same code as a failed device, which is a good reminder that U1510 describes a symptom of the circuit, not a diagnosis of the part.

Why Build Date Beats Model Name

Look at what the bulletins above actually key on. PIC5965B applies to Camaros built before February 10, 2015. PIT6052 splits 2019 Police Tahoe production at a mid-year change. 16-NA-051 keys on RPOs VRI and WMI. 17-NA-102 keys on RPO XFE.

None of these are model-level distinctions. They are build-date and option-content distinctions, which is why "what does U1510 mean on a Yukon" is not really an answerable question. The answerable question is which master module and which devices your specific VIN was built with.

GM makes this point directly in PIT5698D from a different angle: smart device part numbers change from year to year while looking similar, and installing the wrong-year part leaves the fault in place even when the new part is functionally identical in appearance.

What Other Pages Get Wrong

A correction to an earlier version of this page. This article previously stated that HVAC control module communication is a more frequently documented U1510 cause on the Terrain and Acadia than the grille shutter pattern seen on trucks. We could not substantiate that with any GM document and have removed it. The HVAC-related U1510 conditions GM actually documents are on the Camaro (PIC5965B, ECC reprogram) and the Cruze (PIC6206C, connector X201). If a Terrain or Acadia sets U1510, diagnose it by identifying the master module and testing the circuit — not by assuming a pattern that was never published.

"U1510 is the HVAC control module code." That is one documented master/slave pair on one platform with a build-date cutoff. Repeating it as the definition sends truck owners to the wrong system.

"U1510 is the grille shutter code." Also one pattern among many, and on 2019–2020 Police Tahoe it is actively wrong, because GM deleted the shutters and the parts are no longer available.

"Try the truck fix on your SUV since they share a platform." Shared platform does not mean shared option content. Two vehicles on the same architecture can have entirely different devices on the same bus depending on RPO codes.

Repair cost quoted as a single figure. The documented repairs on this page range from reseating a connector at no parts cost, to a software reflash, to a harness replacement, to a shutter assembly. Any page giving one price for U1510 is guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I just try the Sierra fix on my Yukon?

The G218 ground check costs nothing and applies to 2014–2017 full-size trucks and SUVs, so it is reasonable to inspect. What is not reasonable is buying a part based on another model's outcome. Confirm which master module set the code on your vehicle first.

Does trim level affect which device is involved?

Yes, and more than model year does. GM keys several of these bulletins to specific RPO codes — XFE on the Cadillac shutter bulletin, VRI and WMI on the Malibu and LaCrosse bulletin, 9C1 on the Police Tahoe document. A vehicle without the option cannot set the code for the device that option adds.

Is U1510 ever a safety concern?

The code itself reports a communication loss, not a safety system failure. But it appears in bulletins whose symptom lists include engine stall, loss of power steering assist and Service Air Bag warnings, so the surrounding symptoms matter more than the code. If the vehicle stalls or loses steering assist, treat it as urgent.

Will the fix always be inexpensive?

No, and that is the point of diagnosing before buying. A loose X201 connector on a Cruze costs nothing in parts. A front fascia harness on a Cadillac ATS is two hours of labor plus the part. Confirming the actual cause is what decides which of those you pay for.

Can one bad ground set U1510 on several devices at once?

Yes. That is exactly the pattern PIT5405 and PIT5562 describe — a single degraded ground producing a long list of unrelated-looking communication codes across multiple modules. Multiple simultaneous U-codes point toward a shared power or ground fault, not several devices failing together.

My scan tool won't command the shutters. Is the shutter bad?

Not necessarily. On a Police Tahoe with updated ECM calibrations, GDS2 shutter functions are disabled by design. On other vehicles, commanding a LIN device requires a bidirectional tool working through the master module, since the LIN bus is not wired to the diagnostic connector at all.

Does a GMC U1510 have GMC-specific documentation?

The GMC-badged documents here are the truck ground bulletins, PIT5405 and PIT5562, which cover Sierra directly. PIT5698D and 15-NA-087 cover all four GM brands including GMC.
