U1510 on a GMC Sierra means the master control module reported that a smart device on one of the truck's LIN buses stopped answering. What Does U1510 Mean on a GMC Sierra?
U1510 is a Local Interconnect Network communication code. GM's own diagnostic document on the subject, PIT5698 (revised through PIT5698D, covering 2013–2024 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC), describes the architecture plainly: a LIN bus is a single wire connecting one master control module — an ECM, a BCM, a radio — to one or more smart devices such as switches, sensors and small motors. When serial data communication is lost between the master and one of those devices, the master sets a no-communication code against the device that went quiet.
That is the whole meaning of U1510. The master module is telling you that a specific slave device stopped responding. Which module is the master, and which device went quiet, changes by vehicle, by model year, and by which options the truck was built with. On a Sierra the same code number can point at a grille shutter actuator, an HVAC control head, a steering wheel switch pack, or nothing more exotic than a corroded ground stud under the dash.
PIT5698D lists U1510 alongside a long run of sibling codes — U1343 through U1349, U1501, U1502, U1505, U1509, U1511, and dozens more in the U15xx range — all of which are the same kind of message about different devices on different buses. Seeing several of them together is normal and usually means the problem is upstream of any one device.
Why Can't Your Scan Tool See the Device That Set U1510?
This is the single most useful thing to understand about the code, and it explains why so many U1510 repairs go wrong.
PIT5698D states that LIN buses are not wired to the DLC. Your scan tool never communicates on a LIN bus. It communicates with the master controller — which is wired to the data link connector on High Speed, Low Speed or Chassis GMLAN — and the master controller then relays commands and parameters to and from the smart devices on its LIN bus.
The practical consequence: when you plug in and read U1510, you are reading a secondhand report. The device that actually failed does not appear in the module list, cannot be pinged, and in most cases cannot be commanded unless you have a bidirectional tool talking through the master. If you go looking for the offending module in a network topology scan, you will not find it, because it was never on the network your tool can reach.
That is why the correct first move on a Sierra U1510 is not a parts order. It is a wiring diagram. You need to identify which module is the master for the bus in question and what devices hang off it, and then work the single wire between them.
What Are the Symptoms of U1510 on a Sierra?
Symptoms depend entirely on what the silent device does, which is why they range from invisible to alarming:
- Malfunction indicator lamp on with no drivability change at all
- Blower motor inoperative, or running but stuck at one speed
- Climate control display or steering wheel switches unresponsive
- Poor A/C performance or higher-than-normal coolant temperature if a grille shutter is stuck closed
- Stop/Start disabled
- Instrument cluster, radio or HVAC going blank intermittently
- No symptom whatsoever — the code is stored and only found during an unrelated scan
When U1510 shows up alone and the truck drives normally, the fault is usually a single device or its single wire. When it shows up in a crowd of other communication codes and the truck also stalls, loses power steering assist, or blanks out displays, the fault is almost never the LIN device — it is power or ground feeding everything.

The G218 Ground Bulletin — and Why It Matters More Than the Grille Shutter
GM PIT5405, first published May 2015 and revised as PIT5405A and PIT5405C through January 2017, covers 2014–2017 full-size trucks and SUVs including Sierra. The subject line is a list of symptoms that sound nothing like a communication problem: steering jerks or kicks back, reduced power steering assist, engine stall, no start, Service StabiliTrak, and IPC, radio or HVAC going blank.
The DTC list in that bulletin includes U1510, along with U0073, U0078, U0029, U0028, U0415, U0140, U0126, U0121, U0101, U0100, C0544, C0710, B127B, B2605, B3600, C0800, U0428, U0452, U0131 and P0513.
The cause GM identifies is a poor BCM ground at G218 — specifically, the front-of-dash insulator mat becoming trapped between the ground eyelet and the body stud. The correction is to remove the ground nut and eyelet and cut the insulator mat back so the eyelet seats metal-to-metal. PIT5405A and PIT5405C add two more causes to the same symptom set: a shorted B+ battery cable at the starter solenoid (from a loose starter shield contacting the cable terminal ring, or a ring terminal mis-installed or rotated during installation), and high resistance or a loose connection at the battery fuse block or battery cables.
The reason this matters: it costs nothing to check, and it explains a U1510 that arrives with a dozen friends. A grille shutter actuator does not make the power steering kick back.
The 2017 Ground Bolt Bulletin
GM PIT5562, published April 2017, covers 2017 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra and instructs technicians to inspect ground bolts. The condition is described as multiple electrical issues including stall, crank-no-start, lighting issues, and inoperative memory seats, power seats and power windows. The cause is ground bolts that were not hardened to specification.

If you have a 2017 Sierra with U1510 and a scattergun of unrelated electrical complaints, this bulletin is the cheapest thing on the list to rule out.
How Do You Test a LIN Circuit Correctly?
PIT5698D gives specifications most aftermarket write-ups omit entirely, and one of them explains a very common misdiagnosis.
What a healthy LIN bus looks like. Every device on a LIN network — master and slaves alike — puts out its own reference voltage approximately one volt below system voltage, then pulls that voltage low to communicate. At rest the bus reads a steady value near 12 volts. It never reaches full system voltage and never reaches ground.
The meter setting that trips people up. GM specifies a Fluke 87 set to peak min/max with a 1 ms record. On that setting a properly operating bus reads roughly 12 volts maximum and 1 volt minimum. If the meter is not on peak min/max, it will typically read between 7 and 9 volts. That 7–9 volt reading is a healthy bus being measured wrong, and it has sent plenty of technicians looking for a fault that does not exist.
Battery support is not optional. Because the LIN bus swings between roughly 1 and 12 volts — a much wider range than other GMLAN buses, which work at 0–5 V or 1.5/2.5/3.5 V — GM directs you to install a GR8 or equivalent battery tender before testing, or you may get false readings.
Checking the master's reference voltage. Leave the master connected, unplug the smart device, turn the ignition on, and look for toggling reference voltage at the device connector. Full system voltage that is not toggling points to a short to power. No voltage at all points to an open or a short to ground. GM adds a caution worth knowing: certain shorts on a LIN circuit cause the master to shut down and stop outputting its reference voltage until the fault clears and power is cycled or codes are erased.
Checking the device's reference voltage. Leave the device plugged in, unplug the master and every other smart device on that same bus, and look for a steady ~12 V at the master's connector. Three things to keep straight here. Most slave devices run on hot-at-all-times power, so the ignition does not need to be on. Devices that do use a switched ignition feed may not power up at all with the master unplugged and will need power applied to the switched input. And some switched-ignition devices output their reference voltage for only a few seconds before dropping to zero, because with the master disconnected they never establish communication and shut the output down.
No voltage from the device points to poor terminal tension, a missing power or ground feed, or a failed device. Voltage present but communication still failing points back to the part number check.
What Do the Companion Codes Tell You?
The pattern of codes stored alongside U1510 is the fastest triage you have.
- U1510 alone, truck drives fine. Single device or single wire. Get the wiring diagram, identify the master, test the reference voltage both directions.
- U1510 with other U15xx codes. Multiple devices on the same or related buses. Suspect the master module's power and ground before suspecting several devices failing at once.
- U1510 with U00xx codes, C-codes and B-codes, plus stalling or steering complaints. This is the PIT5405 / PIT5562 pattern. Go to grounds and battery cables first.
- U1510 with P059F, P05AE, P151E, P151F or P3056. Active shutter territory. Verify the shutters are physically free before ordering anything.
- U1510 with P16DC and Stop/Start inhibited. GM 15-NA-087 covers Stop/Start inhibited with MIL on and lists U1501, U1510 and U1511 among its codes.
Parts and Cost
Cost swings enormously because the code does not name a part. A trapped insulator mat at G218 is a fifteen-minute repair with no parts at all. A ground bolt inspection is similar. An active grille shutter actuator is the expensive end — a several-hundred-dollar assembly plus front fascia removal labor. A wiring harness repair sits in between, and a module reprogram is labor-only.
Because the spread is that wide, the diagnostic time is the cheapest money in the whole job. Paying for an hour of correct LIN testing beats replacing a shutter assembly that was never the problem.

What Other U1510 Pages Get Wrong
"U1510 means lost communication with the HVAC control module." This is the most repeated definition online and it is one specific master/slave pair, not the definition of the code. It is accurate for a 2014–2015 Camaro where GM PIC5965B documents U1510 set in the Electronic Climate Control module. It is not what the code means on a Sierra, where the master may be the ECM and the device may be a grille shutter actuator.
"U1510 means the active grille shutter failed." Also a real pattern, also not a definition. And on some vehicles it is actively misleading — GM PIT6052 documents that a mid-year change during 2019 Police Tahoe production eliminated the active grille air shutters entirely to improve cooling, with ECM calibrations updated to turn off shutter diagnostics.
"Scan it and the tool will tell you which module isn't communicating." Not on a LIN bus. GM states directly that LIN buses are not wired to the DLC and the scan tool does not communicate on them. The tool reports what the master module says; it cannot see the device itself.
"7 to 9 volts on the bus means a fault." On a Fluke 87 that is not set to peak min/max with a 1 ms record, 7–9 volts is what a perfectly healthy LIN bus reads. This is a measurement error, not a fault.
Part numbers quoted as universal. Some pages list a single grille shutter or harness part number as the fix for U1510. GM's own guidance is the opposite: smart device part numbers change from year to year while looking similar, and installing the wrong-year part will leave the fault in place.
