What does code P0172 mean on a Chevy Equinox?

P0172 is "System Too Rich (Bank 1)" — the oxygen sensors report more fuel than the commanded air-fuel ratio. On the 2010–2017 Equinox 2.4L Ecotec, the usual cause is a failing high-pressure fuel pump whose internal seal leaks raw gasoline into the engine oil. Pull the dipstick and smell it first.

P0172 is "System Too Rich (Bank 1)" — the engine control module has hit the limit of how much fuel it can subtract and the mixture is still too rich. On a Chevrolet Equinox the cause depends almost entirely on which engine you have, and the two answers could not be further apart. On the 2.4L, GM documents a fuel pump seal that leaks raw gasoline into your engine oil. On the 1.5L turbo, GM names P0172 in an emission recall for a charge air tube that pops off the throttle body. Same code, same nameplate, completely different repair.

What Does P0172 Mean on a Chevy Equinox?

The oxygen sensor tells the ECM the exhaust is richer than commanded. The ECM responds by pulling fuel out of the mixture through its fuel trim adjustments. P0172 sets when it has pulled as much as it is allowed to and the mixture is still rich. The Equinox has an inline four, so Bank 1 is the only bank — there is no second bank to compare against.

That matters for diagnosis, because the code does not distinguish between two very different situations. Either extra fuel is getting in that the ECM did not command, or the amount of air is not what the ECM thinks it is. On the Equinox, GM has documented one of each — and which one you have is decided by what is under your hood.

First: Which Equinox Do You Have?

Before any of the advice below applies, establish your engine. This single fact splits the diagnosis in two.

If you have the 2.4L, go straight to the dipstick. If you have a turbo, go straight to the engine bay and look at the big tube on the throttle body. Both checks are free and take under a minute, and between them they cover the majority of documented P0172 cases on this vehicle.

The 2.4L Path: A Fuel Pump Leaking Into Your Engine Oil

This is the one worth understanding properly, because it is an engine-damage problem wearing the costume of an emissions code.

The 2.4L Ecotec uses direct injection, which needs a camshaft-driven high-pressure fuel pump sitting on top of the engine. GM's own words, from special coverage bulletin 12313A: the fuel pump plunger shaft seal may wear and allow fuel to leak into the crankcase, setting a P0172 DTC, and illuminating the Malfunction Indicator Light. GM goes on to say this can cause engine run-on and rough running.

Read that again — the fuel is going into the crankcase. Not into the cylinders, into your oil. Two things follow. First, fuel vapour gets drawn out of the crankcase through the PCV system and into the intake, which is the mechanism that produces the rich reading. Second, and far more seriously, gasoline dilutes engine oil and destroys its ability to lubricate. On an engine already known for timing and balance chain wear, running it on fuel-thinned oil is how a $300 pump becomes a rebuild.

GM also published preliminary information PIP4783B covering exactly this — a P0172 with fuel in the oil, rough idle and engine run-on — and it instructs technicians to pull the dipstick and check for fuel before performing any other diagnostic test.

So do that first. Pull the dipstick, smell it, and look at the oil level. If it smells strongly of raw gasoline, or the level has risen above full without anyone adding oil, you have found your answer and you should stop driving the vehicle.

Special Coverage 12313 — and Why It Probably Won't Help You Now

GM issued Special Coverage Adjustment 12313A in July 2013 for 2010–2011 Chevrolet Equinox, 2010–2011 GMC Terrain, 2010–2011 Buick LaCrosse and 2011 Buick Regal with the 2.4L LAF engine. It covered two conditions together: the chrome layer on the balance chain pins wearing and letting the chain stretch, and the fuel pump plunger shaft seal leaking fuel into the crankcase and setting P0172. Dealers were to replace the balance chain and the fuel pump at no charge.

Now the part most pages leave out. The coverage ran for 10 years or 120,000 miles (193,000 km), whichever came first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service. For a 2010 or 2011 vehicle, that clock ran out somewhere between 2019 and 2021. The customer reimbursement window closed on 31 July 2014.

We are stating that plainly because a lot of pages still tell 2.4L owners to "ask the dealer about Special Coverage 12313" as though it were live. It is worth two minutes to run your VIN through GM's owner site or the NHTSA recall lookup — coverage is decided by your VIN and in-service date, not by a web page — but go in expecting the answer to be no on time and mileage.

Separately, GM issued Special Coverage 14159 in August 2014 for excessive engine oil consumption on 2010 Equinox and Terrain 2.4L (LAF) caused by piston ring wear, defined as burning more than a quart per 2,000 miles, also for 10 years or 120,000 miles. Same situation: worth a VIN check, long since expired on the calendar for most vehicles.

The 1.5L Turbo Path: A Tube That Popped Off

If your Equinox is a 2018–2022 with the 1.5L LYX, the story changes completely. GM's Emission Recall N192271200, issued December 2019, describes the charge air cooler outlet duct becoming disconnected from the throttle body when turbo boost is active — and lists P0172 as one of the codes the condition sets, alongside P0299, P0101, P1101 and P0506.

The remedy is an improved charge air cooler retainer, part 13434668, and GM's document states dealers are to service involved vehicles at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership. The recall covers the 2019 model year (Equinox and Malibu 1.5L, Terrain 1.5L).

For 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022 vehicles the same failure is documented in bulletin 22-NA-224 and preliminary information PIP5651F — but you are paying for it unless powertrain or emission warranty applies. Either way the check is the same: open the hood and look at the large-diameter tube where it meets the metal throttle body. If it has separated, that is your P0172, and the fix is not a fuel system repair at all.

What Are the Symptoms of P0172 on an Equinox?

How Is P0172 Diagnosed?

  1. Identify the engine. 2.4L or turbo. Everything downstream depends on it.
  2. 2.4L — pull the dipstick before anything else. Smell for gasoline, check whether the level has risen. GM's own instruction is to do this before performing any diagnostic tests. A strong fuel smell means the pump seal, and it means stop driving.
  3. Turbo — look at the charge air cooler outlet tube at the throttle body. If it has separated, you are done looking.
  4. Check the VIN for open recalls and coverages. On a 2019 1.5L this can end the job at zero cost.
  5. Record the companion codes. P0191, P2635 or P228C alongside P0172 point at the high-pressure pump. P0299, P1101, P0101 or P0506 point at the charge air tract.
  6. Read fuel trims. Short and long term trims heavily negative confirm the ECM subtracting fuel to compensate, and how they behave at idle versus load helps separate a fuelling fault from an airflow fault.
  7. Rule out the low-pressure side. On the 2.4L, GM directs you to isolate the in-tank pump and perform a leak-down test before condemning the high-pressure pump.
  8. Inspect and clean the MAF sensor, and check the air filter and intake ducting for leaks or restriction.
  9. Only then look at injectors and oxygen sensors.
  10. After a pump replacement, reset the fuel trims. The learned negative correction will otherwise stay in memory and skew running until it relearns.

One buying note that costs people real money: aftermarket high-pressure pumps on this engine are widely reported to set P0191 shortly after installation, trading one code for another. GM's part for the 2.4L is 12641847, and it supersedes a chain of earlier numbers — 12608371, 12633115, 12633423 and 12639694 — so an older number on a listing is not automatically wrong, but it is worth confirming before ordering.

What Other P0172 Pages Get Wrong

  • Treating P0172 on the Equinox as one problem. It is two, split by engine. Advice written for a 2.4L fuel pump is useless on a 2018 turbo, and vice versa. Any page that does not ask which engine you have cannot help you.
  • "Ask your dealer about Special Coverage 12313." It ran 10 years or 120,000 miles from the in-service date on 2010–2011 vehicles. That has expired on the calendar for essentially every affected car. Check your VIN anyway, but do not plan around it.
  • "Change the oil and it'll clear." If the pump seal has failed, fresh oil is diluted again within days. GM's repair is to replace the pump, then change the oil and filter — in that order, and the oil change is part of the job, not the job.
  • "Start with the oxygen sensor." On a 2.4L Equinox that skips the free 30-second dipstick check GM tells technicians to do first, and on a turbo it skips the free visual at the throttle body.
  • "Any high-pressure pump will do." Aftermarket pumps on this engine are widely reported to set P0191 after installation. GM's number is 12641847.

How urgent is P0172 on my Equinox?

It depends on the engine. On a 2.4L with a fuel smell on the dipstick, treat it as urgent and stop driving — gasoline in the oil compromises lubrication, and this engine already has a documented history of chain wear. On a turbo with a disconnected charge air tube you will be in reduced power anyway, so it is a safety issue in traffic more than an immediate mechanical one. In both cases a sustained rich condition will eventually damage the catalytic converter.

Why does my Equinox keep running for a second after I switch it off?

That is engine run-on, and GM names it as a symptom of the leaking fuel pump seal in bulletin 12313A. Fuel that has leaked into the crankcase is being drawn through the PCV system and keeping combustion going briefly after shutdown. Check the dipstick.

Will an oil change fix P0172?

No. If the high-pressure pump seal has failed, the oil is contaminated again almost immediately. The pump has to be replaced, and the oil and filter changed afterwards to get the diluted oil out. GM's own procedure has the oil change as the last step of the pump job.
