P0089 is "Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Performance" — the engine control module is having to command the high-pressure fuel pump much harder, or much softer, than it expects in order to hold the rail pressure it wants. On a Chevrolet Equinox that can mean a failing pump, a stretched timing chain, the wrong camshaft parts fitted during a previous repair, or nothing mechanical at all. GM has an open service update that fixes one version of this code with a free software reflash and no parts, which is worth checking before anyone quotes you a pump.

What Does P0089 Mean on a Chevy Equinox?

Direct injection needs fuel at thousands of PSI, and the Equinox makes that with a mechanical high-pressure pump driven by lobes on the camshaft. Inside that pump is an electrically controlled actuator — a solenoid valve — that the ECM pulse-width modulates to regulate how much pressure the pump actually delivers. The fuel rail pressure sensor reports the result back.

P0089 is not a pressure code as such. It is a control effort code. The ECM knows roughly what actuator command should be needed to hold a given rail pressure. Second, the five-second qualifier means brief pressure excursions do not set the code. A stored P0089 represents a sustained condition, not a blip.

Check the Open Service Update First

In January 2026 GM released a Service Update covering the 2023 Chevrolet Equinox with the 1.5L LSD engine for exactly this code group. Affected vehicles may set P228C, P0089 and/or P00C6.

The remedy is the part worth reading twice: dealers are instructed to reprogram the Engine Control Module using GM's Service Programming System. No hardware is replaced. No parts are required. The repair is provided free of charge, and the bulletin runs until 28 February 2029. Customers who already paid for a related repair can seek reimbursement, with requests due by 28 February 2027.

GM also issued a companion update for the 2023 GMC Terrain with the same codes and the same reflash remedy. One caveat on the paperwork: the bulletin numbers reported for the Equinox and Terrain versions overlap across sources — N252524760 and N252524761 both appear — and we could not open GM's own document to settle which is which. Do not rely on quoting a number. Give the dealer your VIN and the codes; involvement is determined by VIN in GM's warranty system regardless.

The actuator command required to hold target pressure shifts, and P0089 sets even though the pump itself is mechanically sound.

The 2.4L Ecotec has a documented history of chain wear, which is why this matters on that engine in particular. The tell is in the rest of the scan: if P0016, P0017, P0011 or P0014 are stored alongside P0089, you are looking at a timing problem that is expressing itself as a fuel code. Replacing the pump will not fix it, and a chain job is a much larger bill — so this is worth establishing before, not after.

There is a second version of the same idea, and GM documented it directly. Preliminary information PIP5203A covers 2010–2011 Equinox, Terrain, LaCrosse and Regal with the 2.4L LAF, and describes technicians finding P0089 and P228D together after replacing the engine, intake camshaft, or intake camshaft actuator. The high side fuel pressure at idle runs high, around 2,000–2,500 PSI, and there is often a whine from the high-pressure pump. The cause is not a failed part — it is that the intake camshaft and actuator sprocket fitted are not the correct parts for that vehicle's build. GM adds that P0171 may also appear if incorrect injectors were installed.

So if your Equinox threw P0089 shortly after engine or camshaft work, the most likely answer is what went in during that repair, not something that has failed since.

  1. On a 2023 Equinox, check the VIN against the open service update first. A free reflash beats a pump quote.

What Other P0089 Pages Get Wrong

  • "P0089 means the fuel pressure regulator is bad." There is no separate regulator to replace. The regulating actuator is integral to the high-pressure pump, and the code is about the command needed to regulate, not about a discrete failed part.
  • "GM acknowledged a software false-positive across 2018–2023 Equinox models." Overstated. The service update we could verify names the 2023 model year with the 1.5L LSD. If you have a 2018 or a 2020, do the VIN check anyway, but do not assume a reflash is waiting for you.
  • "Replace the high-pressure fuel pump." On a 2.4L, a stretched chain produces the same code with a healthy pump, and on a 2023 the answer may be free software. Both are common enough that pump-first is the wrong default.
  • Skipping the repair history. GM documents P0089 and P228D appearing specifically after engine or camshaft replacement when the wrong intake camshaft or actuator sprocket went in. No amount of parts-swapping downstream fixes that.
  • Treating P0089 as interchangeable with P228C or P228D. They have different thresholds and different meanings. P0089 is about control effort; P228C and P228D are about actual pressure sitting below or above desired.
