P0496 is "EVAP Flow During a Non-Purge Condition" — the module sealed the evaporative emissions system, watched the fuel tank pressure sensor, and found vacuum being drawn when nothing should have been flowing. In plain terms: the purge valve is letting vapour into the engine when it has been told not to. It is one of the more GM-common codes in the EVAP family, and unlike most emissions faults it comes with a free functional test that confirms the cause in about two minutes.

What Does P0496 Mean?
The EVAP monitor works by sealing the system and watching what happens. The control module commands the purge solenoid OFF and the vent solenoid ON, which should close the system off from the engine and open it to atmosphere. It then monitors the fuel tank pressure sensor.
With the system sealed off from engine vacuum, tank pressure should sit stable. If instead the module sees vacuum being pulled — more than a predetermined amount within a predetermined time — it concludes that vapour is flowing when it should not be, and P0496 sets. A commonly cited threshold is more than about 10 inches of water of vacuum detected when purge flow is not commanded, though the exact figure varies by platform.
Note that inches of water is a very small unit compared with inches of mercury. This is a sensitive test, and it does not take a dramatic failure to trip it.
The dominant cause is a purge valve stuck mechanically open — vapour flowing from the canister into the intake even with the solenoid de-energized. That is a genuine vacuum leak into a running engine, which is why this emissions code can affect how the vehicle drives.
Owners of older GM vehicles may recognise the same condition under its previous manufacturer-specific number, P1441, which Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC used for "EVAP System Flow During Non-Purge Condition." Same fault, older code.
The Two-Minute Vacuum Test
This is the most valuable thing on the page, because it confirms or clears the leading suspect without a scan tool, a smoke machine, or buying anything.
- Disconnect the EVAP line from the purge valve — the line running to the canister, not the one to the manifold.
- Unplug the purge valve's electrical connector, so the solenoid is definitely de-energized and cannot be commanded open.
- Start the engine.
- Check the port at the purge valve for vacuum.
The logic is simple. With no power to the solenoid, the valve should be closed, and closed means no manifold vacuum reaches that port. So:
- Vacuum present at the port = the valve is stuck open. That is your fault, confirmed.
- No vacuum present = the valve is sealing. Look elsewhere — most usefully at the fuel tank pressure sensor, which is the input the module uses to detect this condition and which can read inaccurately if it drifts out of calibration.
That second outcome matters more than it sounds. If the valve is sealing properly and the code still sets, the module may be reacting to a sensor telling it about vacuum that is not there. Replacing a good purge valve will not help.
Take normal fuel-system precautions: no ignition sources, and expect some vapour when the line comes off.
Why the Truck Is Hard to Start After Fuelling
This is the symptom that brings most people to this code, and the connection is rarely explained.
When you fill the tank, the charcoal canister takes on a large volume of fresh vapour — it is doing its job, capturing what would otherwise vent to atmosphere. If the purge valve is sealing correctly, that vapour stays in the canister until the module decides to burn it off under appropriate conditions.
If the purge valve is stuck open, that freshly loaded canister has an open path straight into the intake manifold. The engine ends up flooded with vapour precisely when the canister is fullest — so the vehicle cranks and cranks right after a fill-up, then behaves better once things have cleared.
So the diagnostic pattern is: hard starting only after refuelling, easier after the vehicle has sat or been driven. If that is what you are experiencing, the purge valve is a very reasonable first suspect, and the vacuum test above will settle it.
Some owners also report the engine stumbling or dying when the fuel cap is removed or reinstalled, which is the same mechanism from a different angle.
The Oil Contamination Bulletin — Why the Valve Stuck
GM has a document that explains a cause of purge valves sticking, and it carries an instruction most repairs miss.
17-NA-409 (December 2017, revised February 2018) covers 2014–2018 Chevrolet Impala with the 3.6L LFX engine, for P0442, P0455 and/or P0496. GM's stated cause: oil or contamination from the cam cover gasket, causing the purge valve to become stuck.
The correction is the part worth knowing. If the purge valve has been validated as the cause and replaced, GM states that a new cam cover gasket has been designed to reduce the amount of oil pull over at high engine speeds and must also be replaced.

The lesson generalises well beyond the Impala. When the old valve comes out, look inside it. Oil or heavy carbon residue means the valve was a casualty of something upstream, and a clean new valve dropped into the same system will stick the same way. That is how people end up replacing purge valves twice.
O-Rings, Drive Cycles and a Cracked Manifold
Three further causes are worth having on the list before you conclude the valve itself has failed.
Damaged purge solenoid O-rings. Preliminary information reported as PIP6037A notes P0496 can be caused specifically by damaged O-rings on the purge solenoid valve. The valve can be functionally fine while its seals let flow past — worth inspecting rather than assuming the solenoid has failed internally.
The customer's drive cycle. Preliminary information reported as PIP5284A advises that where P0496 continues to set after standard diagnostics, the vehicle's actual usage pattern should be evaluated. Very short trips, frequent refuelling and unusual duty cycles can influence when and how this monitor runs.
A cracked intake manifold at the EVAP nipple. Some plastic manifolds crack where the EVAP line connects. The test for it is neat: introduce smoke into the intake with the purge valve disconnected and watch the EVAP port. Smoke escaping there means the manifold is leaking, not the valve.
PIP6037A and PIP5284A are reported from technician-facing sources; we could not open either document, so treat them as corroborated rather than verified. The bulletin we read directly is 17-NA-409.
How P0496 Relates to the Leak Codes
GM bulletin 21-NA-124 — which covers Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC cars and trucks, 2000 through 2023, all gasoline engines — gives the rule that ties this family together:
- A stuck open purge valve sets the small leak code, P0442.
- A stuck closed purge valve sets the large leak code, P0455, because that code covers purge blockage as well as leaks.
So P0496 and P0442 together are a strongly consistent pair — both are what a stuck-open purge valve produces, from two different angles. One says vapour is flowing when it should not be; the other says the system will not hold a seal. Many owners report fixing both at once with a single valve.

How Is P0496 Diagnosed?
- Record every stored code. P0442 alongside is highly consistent with a stuck-open purge valve.
- Ask when the hard starting happens. Only after refuelling is close to diagnostic on its own.
- Run the vacuum test — EVAP line off, connector unplugged, engine running, check the purge valve port for vacuum.
- If vacuum is present, the valve is stuck open. Before fitting a new one, inspect the old valve internally and check the purge line for canister debris.
- Inspect the purge solenoid O-rings while it is out.
- If no vacuum is present, move to the fuel tank pressure sensor and the EVAP line connections.
- Smoke the intake with the purge valve disconnected and watch the EVAP port for a cracked manifold.

What Other P0496 Pages Get Wrong
- Saying "replace the purge valve" without the test. The valve is the most likely cause, but the vacuum test takes two minutes, costs nothing and either confirms it or redirects you to the fuel tank pressure sensor. Skipping it is how good valves get replaced.
- Never explaining the refuelling symptom. Hard starting only after a fill-up is the clearest real-world clue this code produces, and it follows directly from a freshly loaded canister having an open path to the intake.
- Treating the valve as the root cause when it is full of oil. GM's documented correction on the affected application requires the redesigned camshaft cover gasket as well. Fit a clean valve into a contaminated system and you will do this job twice.
- Ignoring the O-rings. A purge solenoid can be electrically and mechanically sound while its seals allow flow past. Inspect them while the valve is out.
- Forgetting the fuel tank pressure sensor. It is the input the module uses to detect this condition. If the valve seals correctly and the code returns, the sensor's calibration is the reasonable next question.
- Missing the older code. On earlier GM vehicles this same condition appeared as P1441. Owners searching one number will not find guidance written under the other.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to drive with P0496?
Generally yes in the short term. You may get intermittent rough idle and difficulty starting after refuelling, and you will fail an emissions test, but the code does not indicate imminent damage. Running rich for a long period is not good for the catalytic converter, so treat it as a few-weeks job rather than a few-months one.
How do I know if my purge valve is stuck open?
Disconnect the EVAP line from the purge valve, unplug its electrical connector so it cannot be commanded open, start the engine, and check the port for vacuum. With no power to the solenoid the valve should be closed and no vacuum should reach that port. If vacuum is present, the valve is stuck open.
Why is my truck hard to start after I get gas?
Because filling the tank loads the charcoal canister with fresh vapour, and a stuck-open purge valve gives that vapour a direct path into the intake. Will replacing the purge valve fix it?

Can a gas cap cause P0496?
A loose cap is more typically associated with the leak codes than with this one, since P0496 is about flow when the system is sealed. It is still worth checking because it costs nothing, and GM lists the cap among the critical EVAP connections.
What's the difference between P0496 and P0445?
P0496 is a functional complaint — vapour is flowing when it should not be, whatever the reason. P0445 is an electrical one — the module has detected a short in the purge valve's control circuit. They can appear together, and that combination points firmly at a failed solenoid rather than at wiring alone.
Is P1441 the same code?
