P06DD Code: Engine Oil Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Stuck Off (GM Diagnosis & Repair Guide)

P06DD is "Engine Oil Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Stuck Off." The name points squarely at a solenoid — and that is exactly why this code gets misdiagnosed. GM's own bulletin on it describes something quite different: a timing chain tensioner spring that has worn a hole through the oil pump. GM's correction is to replace the tensioner guide, inspect the pump, and check the bearings for debris damage. The solenoid is not a serviceable part on its own, and cycling it will not tell you what most guides claim it does.

What P06DD Means

GM's Gen V V8s use a two-stage oil pump controlled by an oil pressure control valve. The module varies pressure according to engine speed, oil temperature, oil pressure and run time — running lower pressure when it can for efficiency and higher pressure when the engine needs it.

The convention is worth knowing because it is counter-intuitive:

  • Solenoid commanded OFF → oil pressure is higher
  • Solenoid commanded ON → oil pressure is lower

So "stuck off" means stuck in the high-pressure state. The code sets when pressure does not match what the module commanded as it switches the valve.

That has a consequence people find surprising: P06DD is often a high-pressure complaint, not a low-pressure one. GM's bulletin describes the control valve stuck off commanding high oil pressures — around 95 psi — and it lists the condition as "no or low oil pressure" as well, because a damaged pump can produce either.

The Tensioner That Eats the Oil Pump

This is the finding that should reframe the whole diagnosis, and it comes from GM directly.

PIP5407B (published September 2019) is titled "Code P06DD No Or Low Oil Pressure." Its coverage is broad:

GM's stated condition: vehicle setting code P06DD, no or low oil pressure, oil control valve may be stuck off commanding high oil pressures (95 psi) and/or oil pump face may be damaged.

GM's stated cause is the part almost nobody mentions:

Tensioner spring in timing chain guide may be "short" — not fully seating into guide pivot end.

And GM goes further: a broken tensioner shoe may allow the spring to rub a hole in the oil pump. The bulletin includes an image captioned simply "the hole in the oil pump."

Read that again, because it is the whole point of this page. A timing chain tensioner component is physically wearing through the aluminium oil pump housing. The oil pressure control valve is not failing — it is being defeated by a hole in the pump it lives in.

GM's correction, in order:

  1. Replace the timing chain tensioner guide.
  2. If the oil pump face is damaged or worn through, replace the oil pump.
  3. Inspect bearings for damage or wear due to debris from the oil pump.

That third step is the one to take seriously. If the spring has machined its way into the pump, aluminium debris has been circulating through the engine. Replacing the pump without inspecting the bearings leaves the consequence of the failure in place.

GM's warranty labor operations for this repair are 4064230 (Camshaft Timing Chain Replacement) and 4063500 (Timing Chain, Crankshaft Sprocket, Camshaft Position Actuator, and Solenoid Valve Replacement), with the note that only one will apply — verify the correct one before submission. Note that both are timing chain operations, not solenoid operations.

Why Cycling the Valve Misleads

Nearly every guide to this code gives the same test: command the oil pressure control solenoid on and off with a scan tool, watch the oil pressure reading, and if it does not change, the solenoid is at fault.

GM's bulletin states plainly that in this condition, cycling the oil pump control valve will not cause changes in oil pump response.

So a "no response" result does not confirm a bad solenoid. It is equally consistent with the failure GM actually documents — a damaged pump face or a hole worn by the tensioner spring. Concluding "the solenoid is stuck" from that test and stopping there is how the tensioner gets missed.

There is a second reason to be careful with this test. The control valve is reported to be pulse-width modulated, sliding pressure continuously rather than switching cleanly between two states, so the live data will not toggle the way a simple on/off actuator would. Expecting a clean step change sets you up to misread the result either way.

The takeaway: use the cycling test as one input, not as the verdict. A lack of response points at the pump and its neighbours, not automatically at the valve.

GM's Own Procedure Says "Call Us"

There is a second bulletin worth knowing about, and its most useful feature is an admission.

PIP5141D (July 2014, superseding PIP5141C) is titled "SES Lamp P06DD Set" and covers 2014 Corvette, Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 with RPOs 4.3L, 5.3L, 6.2L — LV3, L83, L86 and LT1. Its stated condition is notably mild: a vehicle may set a P06DD code with no driveability concerns.

GM's instruction, where P06DA, P06DB and P06DC are not set alongside, is to gather specific data:

  1. Run the engine to 100°C (214°F).
  2. Check the oil pressure at idle with a scan tool.
  3. Run the engine at 1,100 rpm for 45 seconds and record the oil pressure.

And then — this is the part that matters — record all readings and contact GM Technical Assistance. The labor operation named is 4066070, Oil Pump Testing and Replacement.

GM does not publish a pass/fail threshold for those readings. The bulletin sends the technician to TAC to interpret them. Technicians have publicly noted the same frustration: there is no documented figure for what those pressures should be.

We are telling you this rather than inventing numbers to fill the gap. If you see a confident pressure specification for P06DD published anywhere, treat it with suspicion — GM's own procedure declines to give one. What you can do is follow the test conditions exactly, record the readings, and make sure whoever is diagnosing the vehicle has access to TAC or the current service information.

The Oil Filter Era Mismatch

Before any of the expensive paths, there is a cheap one that is easy to get wrong.

The oil filter design changed on these engines. 2011–2013 engines use a filter with a plastic nipple on the bottom; 2014 and later use a flat-bottom filter with the nipple in the cap tower. Fitting the wrong-era filter is reported to crush it, letting oil bypass the gallery — and producing an immediate P06DD or P0524.

That is a ten-dollar part causing a code that reads like a pump failure. Match the filter to the engine's build date, and if the code appeared shortly after an oil change, check what was fitted before anything else.

Where the Solenoid Actually Lives

A practical point that changes what you are being quoted for.

The oil pressure control solenoid is part of the oil pump, which sits at the front of the crankshaft behind the front cover. It is not a bolt-on sensor you can swap from the outside.

That is why GM's labor operations for this code are titled around oil pump testing and replacement and timing chain replacement — not solenoid replacement. Anyone quoting you a quick standalone "oil pressure control solenoid" job on a Gen V V8 is describing something that does not match how the part is packaged.

It also explains the labour figures. Reaching the pump means front cover removal, and the surrounding work overlaps heavily with a timing chain job — which is convenient, since GM's documented repair involves the tensioner guide anyway.

A note on part numbers. We are not publishing one here. We found the same GM number circulating as both an oil pressure control solenoid and an oil pressure sensor across different sources, which cannot both be right, and we could not resolve it against GM documentation. Order against your VIN through a dealer parts department rather than a number copied from an article.

  1. Record every stored code. GM's procedure branches on whether P06DA, P06DB and P06DC are set alongside.
  2. Check oil level, condition and specification. Free.
  3. Check which oil filter is fitted and whether it matches the engine's build date — particularly if the code followed an oil change.
  4. Listen to the engine. A tick or knock moves this to the urgent branch.
  5. Gather GM's data set — engine at 100°C, oil pressure at idle, then at 1,100 rpm for 45 seconds, recorded.
  6. Verify with a mechanical gauge rather than relying only on the module's reported value.
  7. Do not treat "no response to cycling" as proof of a bad solenoid — GM states this failure produces exactly that result.
  8. Have the readings interpreted against current service information or GM Technical Assistance, since no public threshold exists.
  9. On access, inspect the timing chain tensioner guide and the oil pump face before assuming the valve.

  • Blaming the solenoid because the code is named after it. GM's bulletin identifies a timing chain tensioner spring wearing a hole through the oil pump. The valve is a victim, not the culprit, in the failure GM documents.
  • Treating "no response to cycling" as a confirmed diagnosis. GM states outright that in this condition, cycling the oil pump control valve will not change pump response. That result does not isolate the solenoid — it is exactly what a damaged pump produces.
  • Selling it as a standalone solenoid replacement. The valve is part of the oil pump, behind the front cover. GM's labor operations for this code are oil pump and timing chain operations.
  • Publishing an oil pressure specification. GM's own procedure gathers readings and then instructs the technician to contact Technical Assistance, without publishing a threshold. A confident number from a secondary source is not something we will repeat.
  • Never mentioning the bearing inspection. If the pump has been worn through, aluminium debris has circulated. GM asks explicitly for bearing inspection, and that is the step that determines whether this stays a repair or becomes an engine.
  • Ignoring the oil filter. The filter design changed between engine eras, and fitting the wrong one is reported to cause this code immediately. That is the cheapest thing on the list.
  • Reassuring people because the truck drives fine. GM's own bulletin describes the code setting with no driveability concerns — while the underlying failure is mechanical wear inside the engine. Absence of symptoms is not absence of a problem here.
