P0731 Code: Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio (GM 6L80/8L90 Guide)

What does P0731 mean on a GM 6L80 or 8L90 transmission?

P0731 (Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio) means the TCM commanded first but input and output speeds show first isn't holding. On a 6L80 first uses the 1-2-3-4 clutch and low sprag (plus Low/Reverse); on an 8L90, CB1278R, CB12345R and C13567. Check fluid level first, then compare other gears on a scan tool.

Key takeaways

  • 6L80 first: 1-2-3-4 clutch + low sprag, with Low/Reverse assisting; 8L90 first: CB1278R + CB12345R + C13567.
  • Gears that hold rule clutches out — on an 8L90, a good 2nd points at C13567.
  • A 6L80 can land in 4th when 1st is commanded (P0751) — a valve/solenoid fault, not a clutch.
  • Later 6L80s and 8L90s report first-gear slip with clutch-specific codes rather than P0731.
  • Check fluid and speed sensor codes before internal work.

P0731 is "Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio" — the transmission control module commanded first gear, but the input and output shaft speeds say the transmission is not actually holding a first-gear ratio. Either something that holds first is slipping, or the transmission is sitting in a different gear. On GM's 6L80/6L90 and 8L90/8L45, first gear is built from a specific set of clutches, and which of those clutches also work in other gears is the key to finding the fault without guessing.

What Does P0731 Mean?

Every gear has a fixed ratio between input shaft speed and output shaft speed. The TCM measures both with the input and output speed sensors, divides one by the other, and compares the result with the commanded gear. P0731 means that in first gear the numbers did not line up — the input shaft was turning faster (slip) or at a ratio belonging to another gear.

First gear has the steepest ratio in the box: 4.03:1 on the 6L80/6L90 and about 4.56:1 on the 8L90 (about 4.62:1 on the 8L45). It also carries the most torque multiplication, especially launching a loaded truck or a trailer. That makes first-gear slip one of the most heat-generating faults a transmission can have.

P0731 belongs to a family: P0730 is the general "incorrect gear ratio" code, and P0732–P0735 cover the other gears. Our P0730 guide explains the ratio math and GM's overall approach; this page is about first gear specifically.

Which Clutches Hold First Gear on the 6L80 and 8L90?

Transmission Applied in 1st Also used in What that implies
6L80 / 6L90 1-2-3-4 clutch 2nd, 3rd, 4th Slip in 1st and 2nd–4th points here
6L80 / 6L90 Low sprag (one-way clutch), holding 1st only Slip only in 1st in Drive points here
6L80 / 6L90 Low/Reverse clutch Reverse; manual 1st Slip in 1st and reverse points here
8L90 / 8L45 CB1278R (1-2-7-8-R brake) 2nd, 7th, 8th, reverse Slip in 1st, 2nd and reverse — plus 7th/8th
8L90 / 8L45 CB12345R (1-2-3-4-5-R brake) 2nd–5th, reverse Slip in 1st through 5th and reverse
8L90 / 8L45 C13567 clutch 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th Slip in 1st plus 3rd/5th, with 2nd holding

The 6L80 first gear is unusual. The low sprag holds the output carrier stationary on launch, and — according to Gears Magazine's 6L80/90 clutch-failure coverage — the 6L80/90 also applies the Low/Reverse clutch to help the sprag during take-off, unlike some older designs. In manual first (or the lowest range selection), the Low/Reverse clutch is applied to give engine braking, which a sprag alone cannot provide.

That gives you a useful principle for the 6L80: if first slips in Drive but holds when you select manual first, the sprag becomes a stronger suspect, because the Low/Reverse clutch can hold the carrier even if the sprag is not. If first and reverse both slip, look at the Low/Reverse clutch and its circuit. If first and second, third and fourth all slip, the 1-2-3-4 clutch is the common link. Treat this as reasoning from the application chart, confirmed with data — not a substitute for it.

On the 8L90, first is made by three clutches at once, and every one of them also works in other gears. That is actually helpful: the gears that hold rule clutches out. If 2nd is fine, CB1278R and CB12345R are working, which leaves C13567 as the only first-gear clutch 2nd does not use.

How Does the TCM Test First Gear?

GM's published OBD summaries describe the principle for these units as attained gear slip: the difference between the input speed the commanded gear should produce and the input speed actually measured. For the clutch slip monitors on the 6L80/6L90 (2011 model-year document) and 8L45/8L90 (2017 model-year document), the threshold is 400 RPM or more of slip under enabled conditions, repeated over several fail events before a code sets.

On the 6L80, GM's document for the 1-2-3-4 clutch monitor describes a specific first-gear test:

  1. The transmission is in steady-state first and slip reaches the threshold.
  2. The TCM runs an intrusive test: it commands second gear.
  3. Second uses the 1-2-3-4 clutch too. If second also fails to attain, the TCM increments both a first-gear fail counter and a 1-2-3-4 clutch fail counter.

That is the chart logic in software: if first and second both slip, the shared clutch is blamed. The GM document also lists speed sensor codes as disable conditions for these tests — the TCM will not judge slip when it cannot trust the speeds, and neither should you. If P0716 or P0717 is present, start with our P0717 input speed sensor guide.

How GM Reports a First-Gear Slip on These Units

Early 6L80: the ATSG 6L80 manual (2007) lists P0731 "Incorrect 1st Gear Ratio" as a 6L80 code, flagged as emission-related with the MIL on after the first failure.

Later 6L80/6L90: GM's 2011 model-year OBD summary does not list P0731. A first-gear problem is reported by the part the TCM blames:

What happens in 1st Code GM lists (6L80/6L90, 2011)
Slip in 1st, and 2nd also fails the intrusive test P2723 Pressure Control Solenoid E Stuck Off (1-2-3-4 clutch)
1st commanded but ratio lands in the 4th-gear window P0751 Shift Solenoid Valve A Stuck Off
Locked 1st commanded, slip, intrusive shift to 2nd P0756 Shift Solenoid Valve B Stuck Off

8L90/8L45: GM's 2017 OBD summary for the eight-speed used in the trucks reports clutch slip by pressure control solenoid and clutch: P0746 (CB1278R), P0776 (CB12345R) and P0796 (C13567) are the three that relate to first-gear clutches. The P0731 entry in that document belongs to a different eight-speed TCM family.

So on these trucks, P0731 itself is most likely on an early 6L80. On later units the same underlying fault arrives as one of the codes above. The diagnosis — which clutch is not holding first — is the same either way.

The 6L80 Fault Where "First" Is Actually Fourth

This is the first-gear ratio problem most people never hear about.

The 6L80 uses shift solenoid 1 to steer one clutch pressure control solenoid between two clutches: the 4-5-6 clutch and the Low/Reverse clutch. In first, it should be feeding Low/Reverse. If the shift solenoid or the valves it controls stick, that pressure can go to the 4-5-6 clutch instead — and 1-2-3-4 plus 4-5-6 is fourth gear.

ATRA's 6L50/80/90 material describes P0751 exactly this way: it sets when first is commanded and the gear ratio indicates fourth, or slip exceeds a small threshold. GM's 2011 document shows the same test, with a ratio window around fourth gear's 1.15.

What the driver feels: a truck that launches like it is starting in a high gear — sluggish, bogging, sometimes followed by a harsh shift. ATRA lists these causes for P0751:

  • Debris in the pan, or a cracked filter
  • Debris in the separator plate, and check ball problems
  • An incorrect clutch select valve #2 bore plug
  • A sticking CBR1/C456 regulator valve
  • Calibration updates, and updated separator plates and valve body springs

None of those are a burnt first-gear clutch. That is why "wrong ratio in first" on a 6L80 is not automatically a rebuild. Our P0751 guide covers that code in full.

Code What it adds
P0700 The TCM's check engine light request — not a separate fault
P0716 / P0717 / P0722 / P0723 Speed sensor faults — fix first; they disable the slip tests
P0732–P0734 On a 6L80, several of these with P0731 point at the 1-2-3-4 clutch
P0736 Reverse ratio — with P0731 on a 6L80, points at Low/Reverse
P2723 GM's 1-2-3-4 clutch slip code on later 6L80s
P0751 / P0756 Shift solenoid / multiplex valve faults tested in first
P0746 / P0776 / P0796 8L90 codes for the three first-gear clutches

Symptoms of P0731

  • Engine revs flare on take-off without the truck pulling
  • Delayed or soft engagement when shifting into Drive
  • Sluggish launch that feels like starting in a higher gear
  • No movement forward in severe cases, while reverse may still work
  • Slipping that gets worse when hot or when towing
  • Harsh shifts afterwards — the TCM often raises line pressure when it detects slip
  • Limp mode, check engine light, P0700 alongside

Do not tow or work the truck with this code. First gear carries the highest torque, and slip there generates heat quickly.

Causes and How to Confirm Each

Cause How to confirm it Notes
Low fluid level Check with GM's fill-plug procedure at the specified temperature Cheapest first check. Launch is where low fluid shows up first
Speed sensor signal fault Speed sensor codes; compare ISS and OSS on the scan tool Fakes a ratio error
6L80 shift solenoid / multiplex valve (first acts like fourth) Scan data shows 4th-gear ratio with 1st commanded; P0751 Debris, valve and calibration causes per ATRA
6L80 low sprag Slips in Drive first, holds in manual first Sprag was updated mid-2007 (30 to 38 elements, per ATRA)
6L80 1-2-3-4 clutch or piston Slip in 1st through 4th; P2723 on later units ATRA: cracked pistons on units built before June 2010
6L80 Low/Reverse clutch Slip in 1st and reverse Shares a pressure control solenoid with 4-5-6 via the shift solenoid
8L90 C13567 clutch 1st slips, 2nd holds; 3rd/5th may also slip; P0796 The one first-gear clutch 2nd does not use
8L90 CB1278R or CB12345R brake 1st, 2nd and reverse slip; P0746 or P0776 Check which other gears slip to separate them
Control module / solenoid fault After mechanical causes are ruled out Inside the pan; requires programming

How Is P0731 Diagnosed?

  1. Read every TCM code and save freeze frame data before clearing anything.
  2. Confirm the transmission by RPO — the first-gear clutches are completely different on the 6L80 and 8L90.
  3. Clear up speed sensor and voltage codes first.
  4. Check fluid level and condition with the correct procedure.
  5. Road test with data: commanded gear, attained gear, input speed, output speed. Note whether first slips, or shows a different gear's ratio.
  6. Test the other gears. On a 6L80, compare Drive first with manual first, and check reverse. On an 8L90, check second, third and reverse.
  7. Map the result to the chart: the clutch that every slipping gear shares, and that every holding gear does not, is the suspect.
  8. Check bulletins and calibrations against the VIN before committing to internal work.
  9. After any repair, relearn adapts and road test through the freeze frame conditions.

What Other P0731 Pages Get Wrong

  • No clutch chart. "Worn clutches" is not a diagnosis. First gear uses specific clutches, and the gears that hold tell you which ones are fine.
  • Missing the 6L80 fourth-gear trap. A 6L80 commanded into first can land in fourth because of a shift solenoid or valve problem. That is valve body work, not a clutch.
  • Treating the 6L80 and 8L90 the same. The 6L80 holds first with a sprag and two clutches; the 8L90 uses three clutches and no sprag in that role. The suspects are different.
  • Assuming GM sets P0731 on every unit. Later 6L80s and 8L90s report first-gear slip with clutch-specific codes.
  • Skipping the speed sensors. A bad input or output signal fakes a ratio error, and GM disables the slip test when sensor codes are present.

A Note on Sourcing for This Code

The 6L80 clutch and solenoid application charts, ratios and early code list come from the ATSG 6L80 technical manual (2007). The Low/Reverse clutch's role at launch comes from Gears Magazine. The P0751 description and causes, the low sprag update and the 1-2-3-4 piston concern come from an ATRA 6L50/80/90 updates handout — industry sources, reported rather than GM-verified.

The slip threshold, the intrusive second-gear test and the code-to-clutch mapping come from GM's public OBD summary tables for the 2011 6L80/6L90 and 2017 eight-speed transmissions. 8L90/8L45 ratios and clutch application are corroborated across GM-based references. Calibrations vary by year; have a dealer check your VIN for current bulletins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does P0731 mean?

The TCM commanded first gear, but the measured input and output speeds did not match first gear's ratio. Something that holds first is slipping, or the transmission is in a different gear.

Which clutches are applied in first gear on a 6L80?

The 1-2-3-4 clutch, with the low sprag holding. The Low/Reverse clutch is applied in manual first for engine braking and is also applied to help the sprag on take-off.

Which clutches hold first on an 8L90?

Three: the CB1278R and CB12345R brakes and the C13567 clutch. If second gear holds, the two brakes are working, which leaves C13567 as the prime suspect.

Why does my truck feel like it starts in a high gear?

On a 6L80, a shift solenoid or valve fault can send pressure to the 4-5-6 clutch instead of Low/Reverse, so "first" is actually fourth. GM and ATRA describe P0751 setting on exactly that condition.

Is P0731 always a rebuild?

No. Low fluid, speed sensor faults, debris and sticking valves can all cause it. A rebuild is justified when scan data and the clutch chart point to internal damage.

First slips in Drive but not in manual first. What does that mean?

On a 6L80, manual first applies the Low/Reverse clutch, which can hold even if the sprag does not. Slip only in Drive first makes the sprag a stronger suspect.

Can I drive with P0731?

As little as possible, and never towing. First carries the most torque, so slip there creates heat fast.

Why does my scanner show a solenoid code instead of P0731?

Later 6L80s and the 8L90 report slip against the pressure control solenoid for the clutch that did not hold. A "stuck off" code often means a slipping clutch, not a failed solenoid.
