P0732 is "Gear 2 Incorrect Ratio" — the transmission control module commanded second gear, but the input and output shaft speeds show the transmission is not holding a second-gear ratio. Second is where the first real clutch-to-clutch shift happens, so this code often shows up as a flare or slip on the 1-2 shift. On GM's 6L80/6L90, second gear is just two clutches, which makes it one of the easiest gears to trace. On the 8L90/8L45 it is three, with only one of them changing on the 1-2 shift.

What Does P0732 Mean?
The TCM knows the ratio each gear should produce. It measures input shaft speed and output shaft speed, divides one by the other, and compares the result with the gear it commanded. P0732 means that in second gear the measured ratio was wrong — usually because the input shaft was spinning faster than second gear allows (slip), or because the transmission was actually in another gear.
Second gear is 2.36:1 on the 6L80/6L90 and about 2.97:1 on the 8L90 (about 3.04:1 on the 8L45). GM's own documentation gives a sense of how tight the window is: in the 2011 6L80/6L90 OBD summary, a converter clutch diagnostic accepts second gear only when the measured ratio falls between roughly 2.19 and 2.53. Outside that, it is not second.
P0732 is part of the P0730 family. For how the TCM calculates ratio and how GM reports slip overall, see our P0730 guide. This page is about second gear.
Which Clutches Hold Second Gear on the 6L80 and 8L90?
| Transmission | Applied in 2nd | Also used in | What that implies |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6L80 / 6L90 | 1-2-3-4 clutch | 1st, 3rd, 4th | Slip in 2nd plus 1st/3rd/4th points here |
| 6L80 / 6L90 | 2-6 clutch (a brake, "CB26") | 6th | Slip in 2nd and 6th, with 3rd holding, points here |
| 8L90 / 8L45 | CB1278R (1-2-7-8-R brake) | 1st, 7th, 8th, reverse | Would normally show in 1st and reverse too |
| 8L90 / 8L45 | CB12345R (1-2-3-4-5-R brake) | 1st, 3rd–5th, reverse | Would normally show in 1st and 3rd too |
| 8L90 / 8L45 | C23468 clutch | 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th | Slip in 2nd with 1st holding points here |
On the 6L80, second gear is the simplest gear in the box to reason about. It uses only the 1-2-3-4 clutch and the 2-6 clutch. Look at what else each one does:
- If second and sixth slip but third holds, the 2-6 clutch is the common link — third uses the 1-2-3-4 clutch, so a good third proves that clutch is holding.
- If second slips along with first, third or fourth, the 1-2-3-4 clutch is the common link. ATRA has documented cracked 1-2-3-4 pistons on 6L80/6L90 units built before June 2010, causing slip in more than one forward gear.
On the 8L90, look at first gear. First and second share both brakes (CB1278R and CB12345R). If first is solid and second slips, those brakes are proven, and the fault narrows to the C23468 clutch — the one clutch second adds.

What Actually Changes on the 1-2 Shift?
Both of these transmissions shift clutch-to-clutch: one clutch releases while another applies, with the TCM timing the handover through pressure control solenoids. Knowing which clutches trade places explains many P0732 complaints that only appear during the shift.
| Transmission | Released on the 1-2 shift | Applied on the 1-2 shift | Stays applied |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6L80 / 6L90 | Low/Reverse clutch (if applied); low sprag overruns | 2-6 clutch | 1-2-3-4 clutch |
| 8L90 / 8L45 | C13567 clutch | C23468 clutch | CB1278R and CB12345R |
So a 1-2 flare on a 6L80 is mostly a question about the 2-6 clutch and its apply circuit; on an 8L90 it is about the C23468 apply and C13567 release timing. If the flare is only on the shift and steady second holds, adaptive shift learning, fluid condition and calibration become more likely than a burnt clutch.
Gears Magazine reports that for the 2018 model year GM updated the 8L90's C23468 clutch piston and dam to mitigate cracking, and updated its wave plate for shift-related concerns, noting the changes were paired with calibration changes and were not designed to back-service earlier units. On a 2015–2017 8L90 with a second-gear slip, that is worth knowing about.
How Does the TCM Test Second Gear?
GM's public OBD summaries for these transmissions describe clutch slip monitoring as attained gear slip: the gap between the input speed the commanded gear should produce and the input speed actually measured. The threshold listed for the clutch slip monitors is 400 RPM or more of slip, repeated over several fail events.
For the 6L80/6L90, GM's 2011 document describes how second gear is used to isolate the 2-6 clutch:
- The transmission is in steady-state second and slip reaches the threshold.
- The TCM runs an intrusive test and commands third gear.
- Third uses the 1-2-3-4 clutch but not the 2-6 clutch. If third is attained, the 1-2-3-4 clutch is proven, and the TCM increments a second-gear fail counter and a 2-6 clutch fail counter.
The same monitor also watches steady-state sixth, the other gear that uses the 2-6 clutch. A separate 1-2-3-4 clutch monitor also includes a second-gear case. The TCM is doing exactly what a technician would do with the application chart.
Speed sensor codes are listed as disable conditions for these tests. If P0716, P0717, P0722 or P0723 is present, fix that first — see our P0722 output speed sensor guide.
How GM Reports a Second-Gear Slip on These Units
Early 6L80: the ATSG 6L80 manual (2007) lists P0732 "Incorrect 2nd Gear Ratio" as a 6L80 code, emission-related with the MIL on after one failure.
Later 6L80/6L90: GM's 2011 OBD summary does not list P0732. Second-gear slip is reported by the clutch the TCM blames:
| What the TCM sees | Code GM lists (6L80/6L90, 2011) |
|---|---|
| Slip in 2nd (or 6th), third holds on the intrusive test | P2714 Pressure Control Solenoid D Stuck Off (2-6 clutch) |
| Slip in 2nd that implicates the shared clutch | P2723 Pressure Control Solenoid E Stuck Off (1-2-3-4 clutch) |
8L90/8L45: GM's 2017 OBD summary for the truck eight-speed lists P2714 Pressure Control Solenoid D Stuck Off for the C23468 clutch, plus P0746 (CB1278R) and P0776 (CB12345R) for the two brakes second shares with first. The P0732 entry in that document belongs to a different eight-speed TCM family.
Notice that P2714 names the "second-gear clutch" on both transmissions — the 2-6 clutch on the 6L80 and C23468 on the 8L90. A "stuck off" solenoid code here usually means the clutch did not hold, not necessarily that the solenoid failed.
No Second Gear After a Rebuild? Check the Valve Body
If second gear went missing or started slipping right after transmission work on a 6L80/6L90, ask one question first.
GM publishes an upper valve body identification guide for the 6L45, 6L50, 6L80 and 6L90, because similar-looking valve bodies are not interchangeable. An incorrect one is associated with no second gear or no reverse after a rebuild, and can also affect the input speed sensor's position (our P0717 guide covers that side). We have not opened the guide itself, so treat this as corroborated rather than verified — but ask what was fitted and whether it was checked against the guide before anyone replaces the 2-6 clutch.
Related Codes You May See With P0732
| Code | What it adds |
|---|---|
| P0700 | The TCM's check engine light request — not a separate fault |
| P0716 / P0717 / P0722 / P0723 | Speed sensor faults — fix first |
| P0731 / P0733 / P0734 | On a 6L80, with P0732 these point at the 1-2-3-4 clutch |
| P0729 | Sixth gear ratio — with P0732 on a 6L80, points at the 2-6 clutch |
| P2714 / P2715 | 2-6 clutch (6L80) or C23468 (8L90) solenoid stuck off / stuck on |
| P2723 | 1-2-3-4 clutch slip code on later 6L80s |
| P0741 | Converter clutch slip — a different problem that can feel similar |
Symptoms of P0732
- Engine revs flare on the 1-2 shift
- Delayed or soft 1-2 shift, or a harsh one after the TCM raises pressure
- Slipping while holding second, especially loaded or hot
- Skipping second, or no second at all
- On a 6L80, a similar flare into sixth (the 2-6 clutch again)
- Limp mode, check engine light, P0700 alongside
Do not confuse it with converter shudder. GM bulletin 18-NA-355 covers shake or shudder during light-throttle acceleration between 25 and 80 mph on many 8L45/8L90 vehicles, including 2015–2018 Silverado and Sierra, and is addressed with a fluid change to Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP. That is a torque converter clutch issue, not a second-gear ratio fault.
Causes and How to Confirm Each
| Cause | How to confirm it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Low or degraded fluid | Check with GM's fill-plug procedure at temperature; look at condition | Cheapest first check |
| Speed sensor signal fault | Speed sensor codes; ISS/OSS on the scan tool | Fakes a ratio error |
| 6L80 2-6 clutch | 2nd and 6th slip, 3rd holds; P2714 on later units | Second's "own" clutch on the 6L80 |
| 6L80 1-2-3-4 clutch or piston | 2nd slips along with 1st/3rd/4th; P2723 | ATRA: cracked pistons, units built before June 2010 |
| 8L90 C23468 clutch | 2nd slips, 1st holds; may also show in 3rd/4th/6th/8th; P2714 | Piston and dam updated for 2018 MY per Gears Magazine |
| Wrong 6L80 upper valve body after a rebuild | Ask what was fitted; verify against GM's guide | Linked to no 2nd / no reverse |
| Sticking valve or pressure control solenoid | Slip changes with temperature; may improve after solenoid cleaning routine | Valve body / control module work, not a clutch |
| Adaptive values or calibration | Flare only on the shift, steady 2nd holds | Check for updates; relearn adapts |

How Is P0732 Diagnosed?
- Read all TCM codes and save freeze frame data.
- Confirm the transmission RPO — the second-gear clutches differ completely between the 6L80 and 8L90.
- Fix speed sensor and voltage codes first.
- Check fluid level and condition with the correct procedure.
- Road test with data: commanded gear, attained gear, input and output speed. Separate slip during the 1-2 shift from slip while holding second.
- Check the partner gears. 6L80: does third hold? does sixth slip? 8L90: does first hold?
- Ask about recent work; on a 6L80 verify the upper valve body if second disappeared after a rebuild.
- Check bulletins and calibrations for your VIN.
- Repair what is proven, relearn adapts, and road test through the freeze frame conditions.

| Fluid and filter service | Pan down; inspect for debris and clutch material | Low to moderate |
| Valve body / control solenoid work | Inside the pan; programming if the module is replaced | Moderate to substantial |
| Correcting a wrong valve body | Fitting the correct one per GM's guide | Significant, but it is the actual fault |
| 2-6, 1-2-3-4 or C23468 clutch repair | Transmission removal and teardown | Substantial |
| Rebuild or replacement | Multiple clutches damaged | Highest — ask which second-gear clutch the data points to |

What Other P0732 Pages Get Wrong
- No clutch chart. Second gear uses two clutches on the 6L80 and three on the 8L90. Which other gears hold tells you which clutch is failing.
- Not separating the shift from the gear. A flare only on the 1-2 shift is a timing and apply question; slip while holding second is a holding question.
- Blaming the solenoid named in the code. P2714 "stuck off" on these units is usually the TCM saying the second-gear clutch did not hold.
- Missing the rebuild connection. On a 6L80, no second after internal work points at the upper valve body before the 2-6 clutch.
- Mixing up shudder and slip. 8L90 converter shudder (18-NA-355) feels like a vibration at steady speed, not a flare on the 1-2 shift.
A Note on Sourcing for This Code
The 6L80 clutch chart, ratios and early code list come from the ATSG 6L80 technical manual (2007). The 1-2-3-4 piston concern comes from an ATRA 6L50/80/90 updates handout, and the 8L90 C23468 update from Gears Magazine — industry sources, reported rather than GM-verified.
The 400 RPM slip criterion, the intrusive third-gear test, the second-gear ratio window and the code-to-clutch mapping come from GM's public OBD summary tables for the 2011 6L80/6L90 and 2017 eight-speed transmissions. Bulletin 18-NA-355 was read directly. The upper valve body identification guide is corroborated, not opened by us. Calibrations vary by year; a dealer can check your VIN for current bulletins.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does P0732 mean?
The TCM commanded second gear, but the measured input and output speeds did not match second gear's ratio. A second-gear clutch is slipping or not applying, or the transmission is in a different gear.
Which clutches are applied in second on a 6L80?
Just two: the 1-2-3-4 clutch and the 2-6 clutch. If third gear holds, the 1-2-3-4 clutch is working, which points at the 2-6 clutch.
Which clutches hold second on an 8L90?
The CB1278R and CB12345R brakes plus the C23468 clutch. First gear uses the same two brakes, so if first holds and second slips, C23468 is the prime suspect.
My truck slips only on the 1-2 shift. Is that P0732?
It can be. On a 6L80 the 1-2 shift applies the 2-6 clutch; on an 8L90 it swaps C13567 for C23468. If steady second holds, fluid, adaptive learning and calibration are worth checking before internal repair.
Why do I have P2714 instead of P0732?
Later 6L80s and the 8L90 report second-gear slip against the pressure control solenoid for the second-gear clutch. P2714 on both transmissions points at that clutch — the 2-6 clutch on the 6L80, C23468 on the 8L90.
Second gear disappeared after my rebuild. What should I ask?
On a 6L80/6L90, ask which upper valve body was fitted and whether it was verified against GM's identification guide. The wrong one is associated with no second or no reverse.
Can I drive with P0732?
Keep it short and do not tow. Slip turns power into heat, and heat damages the rest of the transmission.
Is my 8L90 shudder related to P0732?
Usually not. Bulletin 18-NA-355 covers light-throttle shudder from 25 to 80 mph caused by the torque converter clutch, fixed with a fluid change. P0732 is a second-gear clutch problem.
