P0700 on a Buick means the transmission control module asked the engine computer to turn on the check engine light. GM's service wording is "Transmission Control Module (TCM) Requested MIL Illumination." It is a messenger, not a diagnosis: the real code sits in the TCM, and a basic reader that only talks to the engine computer will show P0700 and nothing else. On a modern Buick — an Enclave with a nine-speed, a LaCrosse or Regal with a six-speed, an Encore GX with a CVT — that hidden code is the difference between a software update, a sensor and a transmission. GM's own Buick bulletins show all three.

What Does P0700 Mean?
On GM vehicles with a separate transmission control module, the TCM runs its own diagnostics — speed sensors, solenoids, pressure switches, gear ratios — and stores its own codes. But the check engine light belongs to the engine control module (ECM). So when the TCM finds an emissions-relevant fault, it sends a request over the serial data network, and the ECM turns on the light and stores P0700.
GM service information describes it in exactly those terms:
- The ECM illuminates the MIL when the TCM requests it over serial data.
- The ECM shows only P0700, but the freeze frame and failure records show the transmission code that actually set.
- Both U-codes (communication) and P-codes set in the TCM can cause the request.
- P0700 is a Type A code — it turns on the light the first time.
- GM's first step: correct any engine control and communication codes before diagnosing TCM codes.
P0700 itself has no repair. Nothing called a "P0700 part" exists. Fix the TCM code, and P0700 goes with it.
Which Buicks Set P0700
P0700 needs a separate TCM that reports to an ECM. That is the architecture of modern Buicks. GM bulletins we read describe transmission codes stored in the TCM with the MIL on for these Buicks:
- Enclave — the first-generation six-speed (GM's 2013 bulletin names the 6T70) and the 9T65 nine-speed with the 3.6L LFY in the second generation
- LaCrosse — 2011 six-speed (RPOs MHC, MH7, MH8), and 2017–2018 with electronic transmission control
- Regal — 2011 six-speed (same bulletin as the LaCrosse)
- Encore GX — the 2020–2023 VT40 CVT
Older Buicks are different. On many 4T65-E cars of the late 1990s and early 2000s — the 3800 V6 Century, Regal, LeSabre and Park Avenue — one powertrain module ran both engine and transmission, and transmission codes such as P0748 or P0741 were stored directly rather than through a P0700 request. On those cars the transmission code itself is what you see. If you have an older Buick, our P1811 Buick guide covers the 4T65-E's best-known code.
No GM bulletin we found names P0700 by number for a Buick, which is what you would expect: bulletins are written against the real code. The Buick-specific story is in the codes below it.

Finding the Real Code
An inexpensive OBD-II reader asks the engine computer for emissions codes. It finds P0700 — correctly — and stops. The TCM's codes need a tool that can address the transmission module, or a shop with one.
What to ask for:
- A scan of the TCM specifically, with every current and history code listed
- The freeze frame and failure records, which GM says carry the transmission code that set, plus speed, temperature and load at that moment
- Any codes in other modules. On the 2017 LaCrosse, GM's bulletin 18-NA-083 lists codes such as P073D, P073E, P07E4, P07E5 and P1769 as set in the chassis control module, not the TCM
Record everything before anything is cleared. On an intermittent transmission fault, the freeze frame may be the only evidence of the conditions that set it.
Buick Cases Where the Fix Was Software
Several GM bulletins for Buicks end in a reprogram, not a part. Any of these would have shown up on a basic reader as P0700.
- 2019 Enclave, 3.6L LFY, 9T65 (M3W) — bulletin 18-NA-379: first gear and/or reverse only with no upshift, the vehicle won't go above 25 mph (40 km/h), a 1-2 shift that feels like a momentary tie-up, MIL on, DTC P2731. GM's cause: "a software anomaly." Correction: update the TCM with the latest software, then perform the service fast learn.
- 2018 Enclave and LaCrosse with electronic transmission control — bulletin 18-NA-097: won't shift out of Park, stuck in gear or a tie-up on the 1-2 shift, won't shift into Park or Reverse, possible DTC P187D, P2731 or U0100. The correction is a TCM recalibration, and GM states no parts are needed.
- 2017 LaCrosse — bulletin 18-NA-083: Service Transmission message and MIL with ratio codes P0729–P0735, P0722 and others. The cause is not software but alignment: the coupler between the Transmission Range Control Module and the transmission can be misaligned, and GM's fix is to re-center the TRCM. No internal repair.
GM attaches the same warning to programming work every time: stable battery voltage is critical, and any fluctuation or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. That is why a dealer uses a programming support power supply, and why this is not a driveway job.
Buick Cases Where It Was Hardware
Other Buick bulletins do point at parts — but at specific parts, which is the point.
- 2013 Enclave, 6T70 — bulletin PI0999: MIL on with P0742 found in the TCM, and engine shudder or stall when stopping. Cause: the torque converter clutch solenoid in the TEHCM can stick due to debris. GM's repair is the control solenoid valve and TCM assembly (24264346) plus a valve body kit (24264343).
- 2011 LaCrosse and Regal — bulletin 16-NA-092: no forward gears, or missing specific gears, with possible P2723, P2714, P0873, P0796 or P0776. Cause: a non-functioning pressure control solenoid inside the control solenoid valve assembly (TEHCM). If diagnosis confirms it, that assembly is replaced.
- 2020–2023 Encore GX, VT40 CVT — bulletin 21-NA-003 covers loss of or reduced propulsion with P0730, P0746, P0776, P0841, P0846, P0961 or P0965 (cause: pressure regulator valve sticking in the valve body), and 24-NA-009 covers loss of forward gear and slipping with P2714 (clutch regulator valve sticking; forward clutch piston or case damage possible).
On the Encore GX CVT, GM makes an important point: once line pressure is commanded high to protect the pulleys, "often all codes ... will set eventually," so the first codes to set are the most relevant. A long list of transmission codes behind a P0700 does not necessarily mean many faults.
GM's Dark Fluid Warning
One line in bulletin 16-NA-092 for the 2011 LaCrosse and Regal contradicts common advice. GM says the transmission fluid in these vehicles tends to look very dark, "almost as if the fluid has been overheated," because of rust inhibitors used on internal parts during assembly. Its instruction: do not replace the transmission or the fluid based only on the appearance of the fluid — continue the diagnosis.
Fluid condition still matters. A burnt smell, debris or a wrong level are real findings. But on these Buicks, colour alone is not a verdict.
Symptoms of P0700
- Check engine light on
- "Service Transmission" message on the driver information center, on some Buicks
- Stuck in one gear or limited to low speed — GM's 2019 Enclave bulletin describes no upshift and no more than 25 mph
- Harsh, delayed or flaring shifts, or a tie-up feeling on the 1-2 shift
- No forward gears, or missing particular gears
- Shudder or stalling when coming to a stop (torque converter clutch not releasing)
- Won't shift out of Park, or into Park, on electronic-shifter Buicks
- Sometimes nothing but the light
Causes and How to Confirm Each
| Cause | How to confirm it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TCM software | TCM code matches a GM bulletin for your VIN; calibration not current | 2019 Enclave (18-NA-379), 2018 Enclave/LaCrosse (18-NA-097) |
| Solenoid or TEHCM fault | Solenoid or pressure codes in the TCM; SI diagnostics confirm | 2013 Enclave (PI0999), 2011 LaCrosse/Regal (16-NA-092) |
| Shift-range module alignment | Ratio and range codes in the TCM and chassis control module | 2017 LaCrosse TRCM re-center (18-NA-083) |
| Speed sensor or wiring | Input or output speed sensor codes; check the circuit and connector | Often among the cheaper outcomes |
| Communication fault | U-codes such as U0100; check module power, grounds and network wiring | GM: fix engine and communication codes first |
| Valve body | Pressure and ratio codes after electrical checks pass | Encore GX CVT (21-NA-003, 24-NA-009) |
| Internal mechanical failure | Ratio or slip codes that persist after the above; fluid and pressure tests | Only now is a rebuild discussion justified |

How Is P0700 Diagnosed?
- Scan the TCM, not just the ECM. P0700 only says where to look.
- Save the freeze frame and failure records before clearing anything.
- Fix engine and communication codes first, as GM's P0700 procedure directs.
- Note which TCM code set first; on the Encore GX CVT GM says the first codes are the most relevant.
- Check for bulletins by VIN against the actual TCM code — several Buick fixes are software.
- Check fluid level and condition by the procedure for your transmission, remembering GM's dark-fluid note on the 2011 LaCrosse and Regal.
- Diagnose the TCM code per service information: circuits, sensors, pressures.
- Repair, then complete any learn procedure GM specifies, and road test through the conditions in the freeze frame.
Parts and Cost
| Repair | What it involves | Cost picture |
|---|---|---|
| TCM reprogram or recalibration | Latest software where a GM bulletin applies | Often the cheapest real fix; dealer programming time |
| Range module re-center | 2017 LaCrosse TRCM alignment and learn | Labor-based |
| Sensor or wiring repair | Speed sensor, connector, harness | Low to moderate |
| Control solenoid valve / TEHCM | Internal electro-hydraulic assembly; needs programming | Significant — confirm by diagnosis first |
| Valve body, overhaul or replacement | Internal faults proved by testing | The expensive end; never justified by P0700 alone |

What Other P0700 Pages Get Wrong
- "P0700 means transmission failure." It means the TCM logged a code. Several Buick fixes GM documents are software or alignment.
- Stopping at the engine scan. The real code is in the TCM, and on the 2017 LaCrosse some are in the chassis control module.
- Judging by dark fluid. GM says 2011 LaCrosse and Regal fluid can look overheated when it is not.
- Chasing every code in the list. On the Encore GX CVT, GM says the first codes to set matter most.
- Buying an engine computer. The ECM only reports the request. On many Buick automatics the TCM is built into the TEHCM inside the transmission.
- Skipping the learn. GM's 2019 Enclave fix requires a fast learn after the software update.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive my Buick with P0700?
That depends on the TCM code behind it. Some cause only a light; others put the transmission in a protective mode — GM's 2019 Enclave bulletin describes first gear only and under 25 mph. If the vehicle is not shifting normally, have it scanned before driving further.
Why does my scanner only show P0700?
Basic readers talk to the engine computer. The detailed code is stored in the transmission control module, and GM notes the ECM shows only P0700. You need a tool that reads the TCM.
Will clearing P0700 fix anything?
No. It clears the message, not the fault, and it can erase the freeze frame data that helps diagnosis. Read and record everything first.
Is a TCM software update a real fix?
Where GM documents it, yes. For the 2019 Enclave's P2731 condition GM states the cause is a software anomaly and the correction is a TCM update followed by a fast learn.
My 2011 LaCrosse's fluid looks burnt. Is the transmission done?
Not necessarily. GM bulletin 16-NA-092 says the fluid in these vehicles tends to look dark because of rust inhibitors from assembly, and tells technicians not to replace the transmission or fluid based on appearance alone.
Does my older Buick set P0700?
Many 1990s and early-2000s Buicks with the 4T65-E used one powertrain module for both engine and transmission, so the transmission codes appear directly. P0700 is mainly a code for Buicks with a separate TCM, such as the Enclave, LaCrosse, Regal and Encore GX.
