P219A is "Bank 1 Air/Fuel Ratio Imbalance." It is not a lean code or a rich code — it is a comparison code. The module measured each cylinder's contribution against its neighbours on the same bank and found one of them behaving differently from the rest. That distinction is the whole diagnosis, because it rules out every shared component on the engine. And GM's own service information puts the oxygen sensor — the part most people replace first — last in the sequence.

What Does P219A Mean?

The module does not just measure whether the whole engine is running rich or lean. It runs a fuel trim cylinder balance diagnostic that watches the exhaust stream closely enough to infer what each individual cylinder is contributing.

GM describes the function plainly: the diagnostic detects a rich or lean cylinder-to-cylinder air/fuel ratio imbalance in each bank.

P219A sets when one cylinder on bank 1 is out of step with the others. The bank as a whole might average out perfectly fine. What the module is objecting to is the spread — one cylinder running noticeably richer or leaner than its neighbours.

Think of a rowing crew. Everyone can be pulling and the boat can still be going roughly the right speed, but if one rower is out of time the whole thing is wrong. P219A is the module noticing one rower is out of time. It is not telling you the crew is too slow.

P219A vs P0171 — the Distinction That Saves You Money

This is the most useful idea on the page, and it eliminates a large category of parts before you start.

The practical consequence: a shared component almost cannot cause P219A. A dirty MAF sensor affects every cylinder equally, so the balance between them stays intact. Same with fuel pressure, same with a vacuum leak in the intake plenum, same with the air filter.

So when you see this code, stop thinking about the parts that feed the whole engine and start thinking about the parts there are eight of. Injectors. Spark plugs. Coils. Valves. Rings. A gasket leak right at one intake port.

GM's Diagnostic Order — and Where the Oxygen Sensor Sits

GM's service information gives a sequence for this code, and the order is the interesting part.

  1. Test for excessive fuel in the crankcase due to leaking injectors.
  2. Test the ignition system for improper operation.
  3. Test the engine for any mechanical conditions which could alter the flow into the combustion chamber.
  4. If all of the above test normal — replace the bank 1 upstream oxygen sensor.

The oxygen sensor is step four of four. GM asks you to clear injectors, ignition and engine mechanical condition before concluding the sensor is at fault.

That ordering makes sense once you understand what the sensor is doing here. It is the instrument detecting the imbalance. A drifting or lazy sensor can report an imbalance that is not there — but so can a genuine imbalance, and the second is more common. Replacing the sensor first means replacing the measuring device before checking whether it is measuring something real.

Notice also what GM's first step implies. "Excessive fuel in the crankcase due to leaking injectors" means checking your oil — if an injector is leaking fuel past a closed valve, it washes down the cylinder wall and dilutes the oil. Rising oil level and a fuel smell in the oil are diagnostic evidence, and that check costs nothing.

The Code Doesn't Tell You Which Cylinder

An important limitation, and the thing that makes this code harder than a misfire code.

P0301 tells you cylinder 1. P219A tells you bank 1 — which on a V8 is four cylinders and on an inline engine is all of them. The module knows the balance is wrong; the code does not hand you the culprit.

So identifying the cylinder is a diagnostic step in its own right. The approaches that work:

  • Look for misfire data. Even below the threshold that sets a misfire code, per-cylinder misfire counts on a scan tool often lean toward one cylinder.
  • Injector balance testing. A capable scan tool can disable injectors individually and measure each cylinder's contribution — the direct way to find the odd one out.
  • Compression and leakdown testing. Where the fault is mechanical rather than fuel-related.
  • Inspect the plugs. Pulling all of them and comparing is cheap, and one that looks different from its neighbours is a strong lead.

Do not skip this step. Replacing all eight injectors because the code says bank 1 is an expensive way to avoid finding out which one is at fault.

The Wrong Injector Will Cause This

A cause that catches people out precisely because they just did a repair.

A recurring and well-documented pattern: someone replaces a single injector to fix a misfire, the misfire goes away — and P219A appears within a hundred miles or so.

The reason is spray pattern. Injectors are not simply flow devices; the location and geometry of the nozzle holes determine how fuel is distributed in the chamber. Aftermarket injectors that flow correctly can still spray differently from the original, and one cylinder receiving a different spray pattern from its seven neighbours is exactly what this diagnostic is built to detect.

Owners report resolving persistent P219A specifically by fitting the OEM injector in place of an aftermarket unit that measured and flowed correctly.

Two practical rules:

  • If P219A appeared shortly after an injector was replaced, suspect the injector that was fitted before anything else. The timing is not a coincidence.
  • On this code specifically, match injectors to the original specification. This is a diagnostic that measures cylinder-to-cylinder consistency, so an odd-one-out part is the thing most likely to trip it.

The same logic applies to any per-cylinder component fitted individually — a single coil or plug of a different brand or heat range introduces exactly the kind of variation the module is looking for.

The AFM/DFM Connection on GM V8s

On 5.3L and 6.2L V8s there is a mechanical cause worth knowing, because it is both common and serious.

Active Fuel Management and Dynamic Fuel Management deactivate cylinders under light load using collapsing lifters. When one of those lifters fails, the affected cylinder stops breathing correctly — the valve does not open as it should, and that cylinder's contribution falls away from its neighbours.

That is a cylinder-to-cylinder imbalance by definition, which is why P219A can be an early indicator of a lifter problem on these engines.

What makes it worth flagging:

  • It usually arrives with company. A misfire code on a specific cylinder, a tick from the top end, or oil consumption alongside strengthens the case considerably.
  • It is not a fuel problem. Cleaning or replacing injectors will not touch it.
  • It progresses. A failing lifter can damage the camshaft lobe it runs on, which turns a lifter job into a camshaft job.

We could not verify a GM service bulletin naming P219A on a specific GM platform. GM's diagnostic sequence quoted above is consistently reported by technicians working from GM service information, and a GM diagnostic tip on P219A involving fuel injector replacement is reported for a recent Buick model — but neither is a document we opened and read.

Preliminary information PIP5590A has been cited by dealers in connection with this code on direct-injection applications, relating to high pressure fuel pump leakage. Treat that as corroborated and worth asking about rather than established.

Worth knowing: P219A is not a GM-specific code. Toyota and Honda have both issued bulletins on it — Toyota with an ECM software update to reduce false triggering, Honda with injector replacement. That is useful context in two ways. It confirms injectors and calibration as real causes across manufacturers, and it means much of what you will read about P219A online was written for a different engine. Ask a dealer to check your VIN for anything specific to your vehicle.

How Is P219A Diagnosed?

  1. Record all codes and freeze frame data before clearing anything. This code is often intermittent, and that context may be all you get.

What Other P219A Pages Get Wrong

  • Treating it like a lean code. P219A is a cylinder-to-cylinder comparison. Shared components — MAF, fuel pressure, plenum vacuum leaks — affect all cylinders equally and largely cannot cause it. That rules out most of what gets replaced on fuel trim codes.
  • Putting the oxygen sensor first. GM's sequence puts it fourth, after injectors, ignition and engine mechanical condition. It is the instrument detecting the imbalance, not usually the source of it.
  • Not saying the code omits the cylinder. Unlike a misfire code, P219A names the bank only. Identifying the cylinder is a diagnostic step, and skipping it leads to replacing everything.
  • Missing the aftermarket injector cause. An injector that flows correctly but sprays differently produces exactly the variation this diagnostic looks for. If the code followed an injector replacement, that is the first place to look.
