Lost a key fob, bought a replacement online, or adding a spare? Programming a Silverado 1500 key fob ranges from a free 5-minute DIY job (on older trucks) to a dealer-only procedure (on newer ones). Here's exactly what applies to your year.
Important: Transponder Key vs. Key Fob vs. Push-Button Start
- Key fob (remote only, separate from key): Programs the lock/unlock/panic buttons — most 2007–2013 Silverados
- Integrated key fob (fob with key blade): Has a transponder chip in the key that must be programmed for the truck to start — 2014–2019 models
- Proximity key (push-button start): The entire key must be programmed for both entry and start — 2019+ (some) and 2020+ models
Critical: Buying a cheap aftermarket key online may get you a working lock/unlock remote, but the transponder chip inside must be programmed by a dealer or automotive locksmith with the right equipment for the truck to start. Don't assume a new key will work as a start key without programming.

Programming by Year — Which Method Applies to You
2007–2013 Silverado 1500 (GMT900) — Self-Programmable
These trucks use a basic remote keyless entry system that can be self-programmed if you have at least one working key or an existing programmed fob.
Procedure (requires one working programmed key/fob):
- Sit inside the truck with all doors closed
- Insert your working key and rapidly cycle the ignition from OFF to ON 10 times within 5 seconds, ending in the ON position
- The door locks will cycle (lock/unlock) to confirm you've entered programming mode
- Within 30 seconds, press any button on the NEW fob you want to program
- The locks will cycle again to confirm the fob was accepted
- Repeat step 4 for any additional fobs (up to 4 total)
- Turn ignition OFF to exit programming mode — locks will cycle once more
Note: This procedure programs the remote functions only. If the key blade has a transponder (chipped key), that still requires a dealer or locksmith with a Tech2 to program the start function.
2014–2018 Silverado 1500 (K2) — Requires Two Working Keys OR Dealer
GM added a more secure programming procedure on K2-generation trucks. If you have two currently programmed keys, you can add a third using the on-board procedure:
- Insert first programmed key → turn to ON → turn to OFF → remove
- Within 5 seconds, insert second programmed key → turn to ON → turn to OFF → remove
- Within 10 seconds, insert the NEW key → turn to ON
- Hold for 10 seconds — the security light will go out to confirm programming
- The new key is now programmed for both remote and ignition
If you only have one working key, you'll need a dealer or automotive locksmith with a Tech2 or equivalent scan tool. Dealer cost: $80–$150 per key programmed.
2019–2026 Silverado 1500 (T1) — Dealer or Locksmith Required
All T1-generation Silverados (2019+) require professional programming equipment to add or replace key fobs. There is no self-programming procedure. Options:
- Chevrolet dealer: Most reliable, uses factory GM programming tools. Cost: $150–$300 per key including cutting and programming.
- Automotive locksmith: Can often program Silverado keys at lower cost ($80–$180) using aftermarket programming tools (Autel, Snap-on). Quality varies.
- Online key + dealer programming: Buy an aftermarket key online for $20–$50, bring it to the dealer for programming — saves on key cost but you still pay programming labor.
One caution on the 2019 model year: GM sold two Silverado generations side by side that year. The carryover trucks were badged Silverado 1500 LD and use the previous-generation system, so if yours has the older dashboard, follow the 2014–2018 procedure rather than the T1 one.

Key Fob Battery Replacement (All Years)
Before assuming your fob needs programming, check the battery. A dead fob battery is the most common cause of a non-working fob.
- Battery type: CR2032 (most Silverado fobs 2007–2026)
- Cost: $3–$5 at any pharmacy, grocery store, or auto parts store
- How to replace: Most fobs have a small slot or screw on the back — pry gently with a flathead screwdriver or coin. The battery slides out and back in. Polarity matters — flat side (positive) typically faces up.
After replacing the battery on 2019+ trucks: Hold the fob directly against the door handle or start button to pair it — the truck may not immediately recognize the fob until it's been used within range a few times.
