P0087 Code: Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low (GM Guide)

P0087 is "Fuel Rail / System Pressure — Too Low." The module commanded a rail pressure, watched the fuel rail pressure sensor, and the actual pressure never got there. On a modern common-rail system that means thousands of psi are missing, and the vehicle usually drops into reduced power. This is also the code where the most expensive part in the fuel system gets replaced when it did not need to be — and GM has said so twice, in two separate bulletins, in unusually direct language.

What Does P0087 Mean?

Common-rail systems — both diesel and gasoline direct injection — work at pressures far beyond older port-injection setups. The module commands a target rail pressure through a solenoid on the high pressure pump, then reads the fuel rail pressure sensor for feedback and adjusts.

P0087 sets when actual pressure falls meaningfully short of the commanded value. The reported pattern on a scan tool is characteristic: desired rail pressure climbs under load, actual pressure plateaus below it, and the module gives up and derates.

Pressure can be missing for three broad reasons, and they cost wildly different amounts to fix:

  • Not enough fuel is arriving — restriction, a clogged filter, a weak lift pump, air, a collapsed line.
  • Pressure is escaping — a relief valve bleeding off, or injectors returning too much fuel.
  • The pump cannot make it — genuine high pressure pump failure.

The third is the expensive one, and it is where diagnosis tends to jump. GM's own documents push back against exactly that.

"Do Not Install Another New Fuel Injection Pump"

GM bulletin 08-06-04-029A covers DTC P0087 on the 6.6L Duramax — lack of performance, no power, engine runs rough, no start — for 2006–2007 GMC Savana, Sierra, Sierra Classic and TopKick C4500/C5500 with the 6.6L Duramax (RPOs LBZ, LLY, LMM).

Its opening instruction is remarkable:

Please check the vehicle repair order history to determine if a replacement fuel injection pump has already been installed for the above symptoms. If the fuel injection pump has already been replaced, then do not install another new fuel injection pump.

GM is telling technicians, in its own bulletin, that this repair was being done twice. The diagnostic path it lays out instead is worth following:

  1. If the vehicle starts and runs, verify there are no fuel pump inlet restrictions on the supply side — inspect for kinked fuel lines or a clogged fuel filter. Start at the cheap end.
  2. If a pump was previously replaced, inspect the left fuel rail for debris or fuel contamination. GM notes it will be necessary to remove the fuel pressure relief valve to visually inspect inside the fuel rail.
  3. If particle debris is found in the left fuel rail, follow the bulletin's contamination steps.
  4. If no debris is found, reinstall and tighten the relief valve, then perform the fuel injector return flow test per GM's Fuel Return System Diagnosis.

That last step is the one owners most often never hear about. Injectors returning too much fuel bleed rail pressure away, and the symptom is identical to a weak pump — pressure that will not build under load. A return flow test distinguishes them, and it is measured per injector rather than per bank.

GM's caution applies before any of this: remove the fuel tank cap and relieve fuel system pressure before servicing, and expect a small amount of fuel to be released.

When GM's Own Diagnostics Mislead

The second bulletin is, if anything, more striking.

16-NA-102 (August 2019) covers Duramax diesel hard start and no start with DTCs P0087, P0088, P0191 or P128E, or injection pump replacement. Coverage is 2010–2016 Chevrolet Express and Silverado 2500/3500, and GMC Savana and Sierra 2500/3500, with diesel RPOs LML or LGH.

GM lists the codes it addresses:

That is GM stating that following its own standard service information on these trucks can point you at the injection pump when the pump is not the problem. The bulletin exists to provide a dedicated Fuel Injection Pump Diagnosis Procedure in its place.

The practical takeaway: if you are being quoted an injection pump on a 2010–2016 LML or LGH Duramax off the back of P0087, it is entirely reasonable to ask whether the technician has worked 16-NA-102's dedicated procedure rather than the general diagnostic tree.

The CP4 Question — Check the Screen First

On the 2011–2016 LML Duramax, P0087 carries a possibility that changes the whole scale of the repair.

The CP4 high pressure injection pump on these trucks can fail in a way that is not contained. When it comes apart internally, metal debris is pushed downstream through the entire fuel system — rails, lines, injectors. At that point you are not replacing a pump; you are replacing much of the fuel system, because leaving contaminated components in place destroys the new pump.

There is one inspection that tells you which situation you are in, and it should happen before any parts are ordered:

Remove the fuel pressure regulator and inspect its screen for metal shavings.

  • Clean screen — you are likely dealing with a regulator, a supply restriction, or a return flow problem. A contained repair.
  • Metal present — treat it as pump failure with system-wide contamination, and plan accordingly.

But metal in the filter is not automatically the pump. One well-documented field case traced rust and metal particles to the owner's own fuel source — a transfer tank in the bed of the truck with rusted internals. Before condemning a pump on debris alone, ask where the fuel has been coming from. That question costs nothing and can save an enormous repair.

Gasoline Engines: Chain Stretch and the HPFP

P0087 is not only a diesel code. GM's direct-injection gasoline engines run high pressure fuel pumps too, and they fail differently.

The 2.4L case is worth dwelling on, because it is the same failure that produces the codes covered elsewhere on this site. A P0087 on a 2.4L Equinox alongside P0016 is a timing chain conversation, not a fuel pump conversation. Fitting a pump to an engine with a stretched chain does not restore pump timing. Why Shimming the Valve Is Not a Repair

A word about something widely discussed in owner communities.

On Duramax trucks it is common to see the fuel pressure relief valve shimmed, or replaced with an aftermarket "race" valve, to stop P0087 appearing. Owners report that this can make the code go away — sometimes for a few hundred miles, sometimes longer.

That raises the pressure at which the valve opens; it does not create the missing pressure. If the underlying cause is a restriction, an injector returning excessive fuel, or a pump losing capability, all of that is still happening — now without the warning that was telling you about it. Reported outcomes include the complaint returning under load, or new driveability problems such as surging appearing in its place.

There is also a practical point for anyone diagnosing a used vehicle: if a truck arrives with an aftermarket relief valve or a tune already fitted, that is diagnostic information. Someone was chasing this before you.

On urgency: a vehicle that can drop into reduced power or stall under load is a real hazard, particularly towing. And on a diesel where debris is circulating, every mile driven pushes contamination further through the system. This is not a code to run on for months.

How Is P0087 Diagnosed?

  1. Record every stored code. P0191 alongside means the pressure feedback itself is suspect. P0016 on a 2.4L points at the timing chain.
  2. Check the repair history. GM's own instruction: if an injection pump has already been replaced for these symptoms, do not fit another one.
  3. Watch desired versus actual rail pressure on a scan tool under load. The plateau below target is the signature.
  4. Inspect the supply side first — filter condition, kinked or collapsed lines, restriction.
  5. Cut open the old fuel filter and check the contents with a magnet.
  6. Ask where the fuel has come from before concluding that debris means pump failure.
  7. Remove the fuel pressure regulator and inspect the screen for metal on LML applications — this decides the scale of everything that follows.
  8. Remove the relief valve and inspect inside the rail for debris, as GM directs.
  9. Perform the injector return flow test per injector. Excessive return mimics a weak pump exactly.
  10. Only then consider the pump — and on a 2010–2016 LML or LGH, ask whether 16-NA-102's dedicated procedure was followed rather than the general diagnostic tree.

What Other P0087 Pages Get Wrong

  • Leading with the high pressure pump. GM wrote two bulletins pushing against exactly that — one saying do not fit a second pump, the other saying its own standard diagnostics may wrongly lead to pump replacement. The pump belongs at the end of the list, not the start.
  • Never mentioning the injector return flow test. Injectors returning too much fuel produce identical symptoms to a weak pump. GM's bulletin puts that test in the diagnostic path, and it is measured per injector.
  • Not distinguishing contained failure from CP4 contamination. Whether metal is on the regulator screen decides whether this is a pump job or a whole-fuel-system job. Checking costs nothing and should happen before parts are ordered.
  • Assuming debris always means the pump. Contaminated fuel from an external source — a rusted transfer tank, for example — produces metal in the filter with a healthy pump. Ask where the fuel came from.
  • Treating it as diesel-only. Gasoline direct injection sets this code too, and on the 2.4L the reported cause is a stretched timing chain affecting the pump drive. A new pump will not restore chain timing.
  • Presenting a shimmed or race relief valve as a fix. It changes the pressure at which the valve opens; it does not produce the missing pressure. The underlying fault continues without the warning.
  • Skipping the repair history. GM's first instruction is to check whether a pump has already been fitted for these symptoms. That is a free step that changes the entire approach.
